    Intelligent Approaches for Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in the Cognitive Radio Network

    The cognitive radio (CR) is evolved as the promising technology to alleviate the spectrum scarcity issues by allowing the secondary users (SUs) to use the licensed band in an opportunistic manner. Various challenges need to be addressed before the successful deployment of CR technology. This thesis work presents intelligent resource allocation techniques for improving energy efficiency (EE) of low battery powered CR nodes where resources refer to certain important parameters that directly or indirectly affect EE. As far as the primary user (PU) is concerned, the SUs are allowed to transmit on the licensed band until their transmission power would not cause any interference to the primary network. Also, the SUs must use the licensed band efficiently during the PU’s absence. Therefore, the two key factors such as protection to the primary network and throughput above the threshold are important from the PU’s and SUs’ perspective, respectively. In deployment of CR, malicious users may be more active to prevent the CR users from accessing the spectrum or cause unnecessary interference to the both primary and secondary transmission. Considering these aspects, this thesis focuses on developing novel approaches for energy-efficient resource allocation under the constraints of interference to the PR, minimum achievable data rate and maximum transmission power by optimizing the resource parameters such as sensing time and the secondary transmission power with suitably selecting SUs. Two different domains considered in this thesis are the soft decision fusion (SDF)-based cooperative spectrum sensing CR network (CRN) models without and with the primary user emulation attack (PUEA). An efficient iterative algorithm called iterative Dinkelbach method (IDM) is proposed to maximize EE with suitable SUs in the absence of the attacker. In the proposed approaches, different constraints are evaluated considering the negative impact of the PUE attacker on the secondary transmission while maximizing EE with the PUE attacker. The optimization problem associated with the non-convex constraints is solved by our proposed iterative resource allocation algorithms (novel iterative resource allocation (NIRA) and novel adaptive resource allocation (NARA)) with suitable selection of SUs for jointly optimizing the sensing time and power allocation. In the CR enhanced vehicular ad hoc network (CR-VANET), the time varying channel responses with the vehicular movement are considered without and with the attacker. In the absence of the PUE attacker, an interference-aware power allocation scheme based on normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm is proposed to maximize EE considering the dynamic constraints. In the presence of the attacker, the optimization problem associated with the non-convex and time-varying constraints is solved by an efficient approach based on genetic algorithm (GA). Further, an investigation is attempted to apply the CR technology in industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band through spectrum occupancy prediction, sub-band selection and optimal power allocation to the CR users using the real time indoor measurement data. Efficacies of the proposed approaches are verified through extensive simulation studies in the MATLAB environment and by comparing with the existing literature. Further, the impacts of different network parameters on the system performance are analyzed in detail. The proposed approaches will be highly helpful in designing energy-efficient CRN model with low complexity for future CR deployment

    Learning-Based Approaches for Intelligent Cognitive Radio

    Today with the growing demand for more data transmissions and increased network capacities, cognitive radio technology is ever more relevant. Traditional static spectrum allocation is no longer a feasible option. Through dynamic spectrum access, cognitive devices are able to tap into unused licensed spectrum bands. Thus, improving the spectrum utilization efficiency and fueling spectrum scarce applications. Cognitive Radio (CR) networks consist of smart radio devices that have the ability to sense and adapt to the rapidly changing radio environment. A cognitive device goes through a process of intelligent decision-making, which intrinsically shapes them into smart devices. Motivated by the superior performance of machine learning in various research paradigms, a cooperative Secondary Network (SN) is proposed that operates under a hybrid underlay-interweave access model. By taking advantage of both access models, the SN maximizes its throughput. A detection problem is formulated for each access model and Machine Learning (ML) techniques are applied to the SN, namely Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Naive Bayes' (NB) to classify the state of the channel. The multi-class SVM (MSVM) algorithm is reformulated and used to further classify the state of each primary user in the network. The performance of the hybrid network is evaluated based on the Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) and classification accuracy. In addition, we show that the accuracy of the MSVM is improved through the cooperation of the secondary users. Our results show that the proposed ML-based hybrid model is robust to low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) environments, and yields an improved performance compared with traditional cooperative sensing techniques. Moreover, we show that the Gaussian SVM surpasses other proposed learning algorithms achieving as high as an 80% detection rate with as low as 10% false alarm. Energy detection-based spectrum sensing, relies on measuring the energy level in the spectrum, and accordingly deciding the current occupancy state of the channel. Therefore, CR devices are required to determine the corresponding channel state given a measured energy level. CR networks that use supervised learning techniques to perform the sensing task require data examples of energy levels and the corresponding channel state for training purposes , i.e., labeled data. Having readily available labeled data is a complex task for CR networks, since it requires cooperation from both primary and secondary users. Such cooperation violates the ground rules for the interweave and underlay CR access models. Tackling the problem of labeled data scarcity in practical CR applications, we propose a two-stage learning framework for cooperative spectrum sensing. The algorithm combines the superior performance of the SVM algorithm and low cost training data of the GMM. Thus, rendering the two-stage learning framework suitable for practical CR applications. Finally, a system model is proposed and the performance of the system is evaluated based on the ROC for its upper and lower performance bounds. Additionally, our results show that the two-stage learning attains a higher detection performance compared with using the GMM algorithm

    Distributed Adaptation Techniques for Connected Vehicles

    In this PhD dissertation, we propose distributed adaptation mechanisms for connected vehicles to deal with the connectivity challenges. To understand the system behavior of the solutions for connected vehicles, we first need to characterize the operational environment. Therefore, we devised a large scale fading model for various link types, including point-to-point vehicular communications and multi-hop connected vehicles. We explored two small scale fading models to define the characteristics of multi-hop connected vehicles. Taking our research into multi-hop connected vehicles one step further, we propose selective information relaying to avoid message congestion due to redundant messages received by the relay vehicle. Results show that the proposed mechanism reduces messaging load by up to 75% without sacrificing environmental awareness. Once we define the channel characteristics, we propose a distributed congestion control algorithm to solve the messaging overhead on the channels as the next research interest of this dissertation. We propose a combined transmit power and message rate adaptation for connected vehicles. The proposed algorithm increases the environmental awareness and achieves the application requirements by considering highly dynamic network characteristics. Both power and rate adaptation mechanisms are performed jointly to avoid one result affecting the other negatively. Results prove that the proposed algorithm can increase awareness by 20% while keeping the channel load and interference at almost the same level as well as improve the average message rate by 18%. As the last step of this dissertation, distributed cooperative dynamic spectrum access technique is proposed to solve the channel overhead and the limited resources issues. The adaptive energy detection threshold, which is used to decide whether the channel is busy, is optimized in this work by using a computationally efficient numerical approach. Each vehicle evaluates the available channels by voting on the information received from one-hop neighbors. An interdisciplinary approach referred to as entropy-based weighting is used for defining the neighbor credibility. Once the vehicle accesses the channel, we propose a decision mechanism for channel switching that is inspired by the optimal flower selection process employed by bumblebees foraging. Experimental results show that by using the proposed distributed cooperative spectrum sensing mechanism, spectrum detection error converges to zero

    Efficient medium access control protocol for vehicular ad-hoc networks

    Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have enjoyed a tremendous growth in the last decade and the advancement in communication technologies has played a big role behind the success of ITS. Inter-vehicle communication (IVC) is a critical requirement for ITS and due to the nature of communication, vehicular ad-hoc network technology (VANET) is the most suitable communication technology for inter-vehicle communications. In Practice, however, VANET poses some extreme challenges including dropping out of connections as the moving vehicle moves out of the coverage range, joining of new nodes moving at high speeds, dynamic change in topology and connectivity, time variability of signal strength, throughput and time delay. One of the most challenging issues facing vehicular networks lies in the design of efficient resource management schemes, due to the mobile nature of nodes, delay constraints for safety applications and interference. The main application of VANET in ITS lies in the exchange of safety messages between nodes. Moreover, as the wireless access in vehicular environment (WAVE) moves closer to reality, management of these networks is of increasing concern for ITS designers and other stakeholder groups. As such, management of resources plays a significant role in VANET and ITS. For resource management in VANET, a medium access control protocol is used, which makes sure that limited resources are distributed efficiently. In this thesis, an efficient Multichannel Cognitive MAC (MCM) is developed, which assesses the quality of channel prior to transmission. MCM employs dynamic channel allocation and negotiation algorithms to achieve a significant improvement in channel utilisation, system reliability, and delay constraints while simultaneously addressing Quality of Service. Moreover, modified access priority parameters and safety message acknowledgments will be used to improve the reliability of safety messages. The proposed protocols are implemented using network simulation tools. Extensive experiments demonstrated a faster and more efficient reception of safety messages compared to existing VANET technologies. Finally, improvements in delay and packet delivery ratios are presented
