    A Systematic Literature Review of Path-Planning Strategies for Robot Navigation in Unknown Environment

    The Many industries, including ports, space, surveillance, military, medicine and agriculture have benefited greatly from mobile robot technology.  An autonomous mobile robot navigates in situations that are both static and dynamic. As a result, robotics experts have proposed a range of strategies. Perception, localization, path planning, and motion control are all required for mobile robot navigation. However, Path planning is a critical component of a quick and secure navigation. Over the previous few decades, many path-planning algorithms have been developed. Despite the fact that the majority of mobile robot applications take place in static environments, there is a scarcity of algorithms capable of guiding robots in dynamic contexts. This review compares qualitatively mobile robot path-planning systems capable of navigating robots in static and dynamic situations. Artificial potential fields, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, neural networks, particle swarm optimization, artificial bee colonies, bacterial foraging optimization, and ant-colony are all discussed in the paper. Each method's application domain, navigation technique and validation context are discussed and commonly utilized cutting-edge methods are analyzed. This research will help researchers choose appropriate path-planning approaches for various applications including robotic cranes at the sea ports as well as discover gaps for optimization

    Adaptive and learning-based formation control of swarm robots

    Autonomous aerial and wheeled mobile robots play a major role in tasks such as search and rescue, transportation, monitoring, and inspection. However, these operations are faced with a few open challenges including robust autonomy, and adaptive coordination based on the environment and operating conditions, particularly in swarm robots with limited communication and perception capabilities. Furthermore, the computational complexity increases exponentially with the number of robots in the swarm. This thesis examines two different aspects of the formation control problem. On the one hand, we investigate how formation could be performed by swarm robots with limited communication and perception (e.g., Crazyflie nano quadrotor). On the other hand, we explore human-swarm interaction (HSI) and different shared-control mechanisms between human and swarm robots (e.g., BristleBot) for artistic creation. In particular, we combine bio-inspired (i.e., flocking, foraging) techniques with learning-based control strategies (using artificial neural networks) for adaptive control of multi- robots. We first review how learning-based control and networked dynamical systems can be used to assign distributed and decentralized policies to individual robots such that the desired formation emerges from their collective behavior. We proceed by presenting a novel flocking control for UAV swarm using deep reinforcement learning. We formulate the flocking formation problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and consider a leader-follower configuration, where consensus among all UAVs is used to train a shared control policy, and each UAV performs actions based on the local information it collects. In addition, to avoid collision among UAVs and guarantee flocking and navigation, a reward function is added with the global flocking maintenance, mutual reward, and a collision penalty. We adapt deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) with centralized training and decentralized execution to obtain the flocking control policy using actor-critic networks and a global state space matrix. In the context of swarm robotics in arts, we investigate how the formation paradigm can serve as an interaction modality for artists to aesthetically utilize swarms. In particular, we explore particle swarm optimization (PSO) and random walk to control the communication between a team of robots with swarming behavior for musical creation

    Cooperative Carrying Control for Mobile Robots in Indoor Scenario

    openIn recent years, there has been a growing interest in designing multi-robot systems to provide cost-effective, fault-tolerant and reliable solutions to a variety of automated applications. In particular, from an industrial perspective, cooperative carrying techniques based on Reinforcement Learning (RL) gained a strong interest. Compared to a single robot system, this approach improves the system’s robustness and manipulation dexterity in the transportation of large objects. However, in the current state of the art, the environments’ dynamism and re-training procedure represent a considerable limitation for most of the existing cooperative carrying RL-based solutions. In this thesis, we employ the Value Propagation Networks (VPN) algorithm for cooperative multi-robot transport scenarios. We extend and test the Delta-Q cooperation metric to V-value-based agents, and we investigate path generation algorithms and trajectory tracking controllers for differential drive robots. Moreover, we explore localization algorithms in order to take advantage of range sensors and mitigate the drift errors of wheel odometry, and we conduct experiments to derive key performance indicators of range sensors' precision. Lastly, we perform realistic industrial indoor simulations using Robot Operating System (ROS) and Gazebo 3D visualization tool, including physical objects and 6G communication constraints. Our results showed that the proposed VPN-based algorithm outperforms the current state-of-the-art since the trajectory planning and dynamic obstacle avoidance are performed in real-time, without re-training the model, and under constant 6G network coverage.In recent years, there has been a growing interest in designing multi-robot systems to provide cost-effective, fault-tolerant and reliable solutions to a variety of automated applications.     Vision based automated formation for multi robot cooperation

    In a multi robot system, robots are required to cooperate with each other, and therefore should have the ability to make their own decision based on multiple input sensors not only from the robots, but also from nearby robots. The task of carrying oversized objects of different shapes poses a challenge in selecting an appropriate group formation. Hence, the main objective of this project is to establish an algorithm that enables multi robot system to carry large load by automatically selecting the required group formation to successfully execute the task. At first, a robot will need to identify the shape of the object (oversized bar, rectangular, square or circular shapes). Then, the robots will form a suitable formation to carry the object. There are two main problems in this project. First, the capability of the robot to identify the shape of the object because the object’s image will be a bit skew form the actual shape, due to the slanting angle of the camera used to detect the shapes of the objects. The second challenge is maintaining the formation of the robots, while carrying the load on top of the robots, to a specified destination. A multi robot system, built in-house is used in the experiments to investigate the performance of the algorithm proposed. Algorithms implemented in this project are leader-follower and behaviour based strategy. One of the robots will operate as the command giver or the leader to the other robots. The algorithm consists of communication strategies and autonomous decision making capability. The robot will be communicating with each other using Xbee wireless modules and extracting the behaviour of the other robots. Sensors placed around the body of the robots are utilized to detect their relative distance, and hence, used to maintain their formation, so as to prevent the load from falling down. All the decisions are made by the robots autonomously via the onboard controllers. The multi robot system is shown to be able to autonomously determine the shape of the different oversized objects, thus appropriately change into formations capable of transporting large objects to a specified destination point autonomously, with no outside intervention
