Broker Positions in Task-Specific Knowledge Networks
In this paper we empirically investigate various benefits and costs associated with broker characteristics of individuals who operate in the account management system of financial service providers. We narrow our focus to broker positions in two specific task-specific knowledge networks that facilitate account management. We study the effect of broker positions on the contribution of individuals to organizational performance. We measure such a contribution by measuring the perceptions of others concerning a particular individual. We also explore how certain personal costs are associated with these task-specific broker positions. More specifically, we explore how these positions affect role ambiguity and role conflict, as self-perceived by that particular individual. To test the hypothesized effects we collect data for a network consisting of 55 individuals. We conclude with stating that service specification broker positions benefit organizations, but service delivery broker positions are detrimental to an organization and that they also invoke personal costs.social networks;account management;role stress;task-specific broker positions
Inter-workgroup barrier synchronisation on graphics processing units
GPUs are parallel devices that are able to run thousands of
independent threads concurrently. Traditional GPU programs are
data-parallel, requiring little to no communication,
i.e. synchronisation, between threads. However, classical concurrency
in the context of CPUs often exploits synchronisation idioms that are
not supported on GPUs. By studying such idioms on GPUs, with an aim to
facilitate them in a portable way, a wider and more generic space of
GPU applications can be made possible.
While the breadth of this thesis extends to many aspects of GPU
systems, the common thread throughout is the global barrier: an
execution barrier that synchronises all threads executing a GPU
application. The idea of such a barrier might seem straightforward,
however this investigation reveals many challenges and insights. In
particular, this thesis includes the following studies:
Execution models: while a general global barrier can deadlock due to
starvation on GPUs, it is shown that the scheduling guarantees of
current GPUs can be used to dynamically create an execution
environment that allows for a safe and portable global barrier
across a subset of the GPU threads.
Application optimisations: a set GPU optimisations are examined that
are tailored for graph applications, including one optimisation
enabled by the global barrier. It is shown that these optimisations
can provided substantial performance improvements, e.g. the barrier
optimisation achieves over a 10X speedup on AMD and Intel GPUs. The
performance portability of these optimisations is investigated, as
their utility varies across input, application, and architecture.
Multitasking: because many GPUs do not support preemption,
long-running GPU compute tasks (e.g. applications that use the
global barrier) may block other GPU functions, including graphics. A
simple cooperative multitasking scheme is proposed that allows
graphics tasks to meet their deadlines with reasonable overheads.Open Acces

Organizing information on the next generation web - Design and implementation of a new bookmark structure
The next-generation Web will increase the need for a highly organized and ever evolving method to store references to Web objects. These requirements could be realized by the development of a new bookmark structure. This paper endeavors to identify the key requirements of such a bookmark, specifically in relation to Web documents, and sets out a suggested design through which these needs may be accomplished. A prototype developed offers such features as the sharing of bookmarks between users and groups of users. Bookmarks for Web documents in this prototype allow more specific information to be stored such as: URL, the document type, the document title, keywords, a summary, user annotations, date added, date last visited and date last modified. Individuals may access the service from anywhere on the Internet, as long as they have a Java-enabled Web browser
