Distance Metric Learning using Graph Convolutional Networks: Application to Functional Brain Networks
Evaluating similarity between graphs is of major importance in several
computer vision and pattern recognition problems, where graph representations
are often used to model objects or interactions between elements. The choice of
a distance or similarity metric is, however, not trivial and can be highly
dependent on the application at hand. In this work, we propose a novel metric
learning method to evaluate distance between graphs that leverages the power of
convolutional neural networks, while exploiting concepts from spectral graph
theory to allow these operations on irregular graphs. We demonstrate the
potential of our method in the field of connectomics, where neuronal pathways
or functional connections between brain regions are commonly modelled as
graphs. In this problem, the definition of an appropriate graph similarity
function is critical to unveil patterns of disruptions associated with certain
brain disorders. Experimental results on the ABIDE dataset show that our method
can learn a graph similarity metric tailored for a clinical application,
improving the performance of a simple k-nn classifier by 11.9% compared to a
traditional distance metric.Comment: International Conference on Medical Image Computing and

Depth from Monocular Images using a Semi-Parallel Deep Neural Network (SPDNN) Hybrid Architecture
Deep neural networks are applied to a wide range of problems in recent years.
In this work, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is applied to the problem of
determining the depth from a single camera image (monocular depth). Eight
different networks are designed to perform depth estimation, each of them
suitable for a feature level. Networks with different pooling sizes determine
different feature levels. After designing a set of networks, these models may
be combined into a single network topology using graph optimization techniques.
This "Semi Parallel Deep Neural Network (SPDNN)" eliminates duplicated common
network layers, and can be further optimized by retraining to achieve an
improved model compared to the individual topologies. In this study, four SPDNN
models are trained and have been evaluated at 2 stages on the KITTI dataset.
The ground truth images in the first part of the experiment are provided by the
benchmark, and for the second part, the ground truth images are the depth map
results from applying a state-of-the-art stereo matching method. The results of
this evaluation demonstrate that using post-processing techniques to refine the
target of the network increases the accuracy of depth estimation on individual
mono images. The second evaluation shows that using segmentation data alongside
the original data as the input can improve the depth estimation results to a
point where performance is comparable with stereo depth estimation. The
computational time is also discussed in this study.Comment: 44 pages, 25 figure
Neighborhood Matching Network for Entity Alignment
Structural heterogeneity between knowledge graphs is an outstanding challenge
for entity alignment. This paper presents Neighborhood Matching Network (NMN),
a novel entity alignment framework for tackling the structural heterogeneity
challenge. NMN estimates the similarities between entities to capture both the
topological structure and the neighborhood difference. It provides two
innovative components for better learning representations for entity alignment.
It first uses a novel graph sampling method to distill a discriminative
neighborhood for each entity. It then adopts a cross-graph neighborhood
matching module to jointly encode the neighborhood difference for a given
entity pair. Such strategies allow NMN to effectively construct
matching-oriented entity representations while ignoring noisy neighbors that
have a negative impact on the alignment task. Extensive experiments performed
on three entity alignment datasets show that NMN can well estimate the
neighborhood similarity in more tough cases and significantly outperforms 12
previous state-of-the-art methods.Comment: 11 pages, accepted by ACL 202
