Scan for MARC: conversor de dados analógicos para o formato MARC21 bibliográfico.
We study the conversion of bibliographic records and limits to the object of study in the conversion of analog data for the MARC 21 Bibliographic format from the parsing and
semantics described according to records patterns of descriptive metadata structure and content standards. The syntactic and semantic principles of bibliographic records as defined by description schemes and visualization cataloging, are present in patterns of descriptive
metadata structure and content standards and determine the process of converting bibliographic records for the MARC21 Format Library. It is proposed to develop a theoretical
study that subsidizes the conversion of analog bibliographic records for the MARC21 Format Library in a computer interpreter. Are defined as specific objectives: to present characteristic principles of syntax and semantics in bibliographic records; examine conversion methods and processes of bibliographic records; set image processing method bibliographic records in analog optical character recognition software (OCR); present the computational interpreter conversion of analog data to the MARC21 Format Library. The methodological approach is based on the qualitative approach with exploratory and descriptive purposes. Adopts to literature for understanding and developing the theoretical framework. The experimental
character is present by referring to a phenomenon reproduced in a controlled manner, with experimentation, verification and study the evidence and relationships between facts and
theories. As a result presents the Scan for MARC, a computational interpreter of web access for converting analog bibliographic data for the MARC21 Format Library. It is understood that, so you can pay off demands from institutions who want to use up conversion of bibliographic
records database procedure to the MARC 21 Bibliographic format from the description schemes and bibliographic records display (AACR2R and ISBD), character that is considered innovative research
Conversão de registros bibliográficos do padrão AACR2r para NBR 6023/2002 usando XML: suporte documental livro
The difficulty in preparing references is perceived among students and teachers. The problem lies in understanding the various forms of application of different standards, widely used in information units and academic work. In Brazil, the recommendation for use of ISO 6023/2002, ABNT. It should be noted the difficulty in preparing references perceived in public non-specialist literature on standardization. The goal that was intended to achieve with this study was to develop methodology applicable to a computational tool that addresses the preparation of references to documents containing ISBN. As specific objectives were to: develop a tool to display references using the essential elements established by the NBR 6023/2002; study format conversion of bibliographic records in standard AACR2R to NBR6023/2002; maintain a conversion process from the indication of the ISBN number for the NBR 6023/2002 format, bibliographic records in MARC 21 Bibliographic AACR2R described in the pattern, using the XML markup language, make proposals for further action to address other formats of bibliographic records. The work was motivated by an interest in fostering the relationship between the automated information systems in libraries and user needs, and developing a computational tool that utilizes the essential elements established by the Brazilian standard preparation of references, such as author, title, edition, place, publisher and date of publication, from bibliographic records in standard AACR2R. The methodological procedure involved literature review and field research beyond the study of XML. It was necessary to establish a boundary to the documentary type book, considering the complexity of working, at first, with other support documents, and another, with books that contained the ISBN number, so that one could develop the process of conversion indication from this data in bibliographic records cataloged in MARC 21 Bibliographic format, exploring, well, the ease of original representation of bibliographic information. The research involved reading and bibliographic records of material involving the standards AACR2R, NBR 6023/2002, MARC 21 Bibliographic, ISBN, and XML. In field research, we proceeded to investigate whether looking for tools to ascertain the mechanisms and elements used. We identified several tools, including: a national (MORE) and two American (and OttoBib EasyBib) and went to the comparative analysis of the mechanisms identified in order to verify the information used as well as their patterns of results. It is expected, with this methodology, develop tool to meet the demand of students and teachers regarding the preparation of references, bibliography. In future, we intend to improve it in order to include other formats of bibliographic records
NALNET book system: Cost benefit study
The goals of the NASA's library network system, NALNET, the functions of the current book system, the products and services of a book system required by NASA Center libraries, and the characteristics of a system that would best supply those products and services were assessed. Emphasis was placed on determining the most cost effective means of meeting NASA's requirements for an automated book system. Various operating modes were examined including the current STIMS file, the PUBFILE, developing software improvements for products as appropriate to the Center needs, and obtaining cataloging and products from the bibliographic utilities including at least OCLC, RLIN, BNA, and STIF. It is recommended that NALNET operate under the STIMS file mode and obtain cataloging and products from the bibliographic utilities. The recommendations are based on the premise that given the current state of the art in library automation it is not cost effective for NASA to maintain a full range of cataloging services on its own system. The bibliographic utilities can support higher quality systems with a greater range of services at a lower total cost

Libraries and Information Systems Need XML/RDF... but Do They Know It?
This article presents an approach to the uses of XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and Semantic Web technologies in
the field of information services, focusing mainly on the creation and management of digital libraries compared to traditional
libraries, while paying special attention to the concept and application of metadata, and RDF based integration
The New Technology and Competencies for "The Most Typical of the Activities of Libraries": Technical Services
At a library conference in 1940, William M. Randall called technical
services the "most typical of the activities of libraries" "they are..." he
said, "the things which librarians do that no one else does the secrets of
the craft."
1 In those intervening forty-three years much has been written
and uttered in defense and derision of these "secrets of the craft." These
most typical of library activities have changed the name Randall used,
technical processes, to technical services. They have moved from being
sneeringly derided as "backroom," "basement" or other dreary location
activities to being enthusiastically hailed today as "where the action is."
They are, fortunately, no longer the "secrets" that they were in Randall's
day. They have been moved into, moved around within and even moved
out of the organizational charts. Regardless of all these attitudes and
activities, the functions of acquiring, organizing and preserving library
materials persist and the competencies necessary to carry out these three
functions will be the focus of this paper. In the paper, reference will
frequently be made to the "technical services librarian" meaning any
librarian who works in that aspect of librarianship. The emphasis is on no
particular type of library. The term library will be used as meaning also
