    Implementation of Assembly Operations with YuMi Robot

    Nowadays, the trend in manufacturing industries is to make the manufacturing processes sustainable in the countries with higher labour cost. Factory of the Future research project of Aalto University aims to develop a futuristic platform for research and demonstration of net-centric production manufacturing model. It is hoped, that the platform can contribute in transforming Finland’s manufacturing into an agile, high tech network of providers of various manufacturing services of production activities. This thesis investigates, how successfully ABB IRB14000 YuMi robot can fit in this net-centric production concept. Two different approaches have been studied: Integrated Vision approach and From Digital Twins to Product Assembly Approach. The results of both studies show that to be able to fit the Factory of the Future concept, the second approach can be used with minor modifications. Two case studies demonstrate the agility of the method. Also, possible direction of improvement has been proposed. The first study results came to be very useful for possible higher flexibility of product-centric manufacturing

    Robotic Arm Exhibit

    Museums like the Children’s Museums and Theatre of Maine (CMTM) and the EcoTarium continually strive to produce engaging exhibits that promote family learning since families with young children are their primary audiences. Using design criteria developed by museum researchers over recent decades, we built a prototype pneumatic arm exhibit for CMTM to inspire children’s interests in engineering and science. We conducted several rounds of prototyping at the EcoTarium to refine the design. We conclude that the final design was very successful in meeting CMTM’s learning outcomes, including the promotion of family learning and active prolonged engagement, and recommend that the museum move to final fabrication of the exhibit

    Passbook is a nostalgic novel that considers the meaning of love and family on the edge of a post-mortal near future. As the era of austerity enters its third decade, a social media platform—the eponymous Passbook—allows the living to interact with the dead, and changes the landscape of longevity forever. Wyatt Simmons, a young underemployed college graduate, finds himself locked out of the American Dream by suppressed wages, strangled career opportunities, and overwhelming debt. While coping with the un-deaths of his mother and sister, and estrangement from his financially-comfortable careerist father, Wyatt perseveres in a dissatisfying relationship of necessity with his long-time girlfriend Sara Grayson, and uses what little money he can scrounge to try and catapult himself into the spotlight of the Lego Corporation, his dream employer. At work, he meets Pepper Boswick, a wisecracking children’s clothing store salesperson by day and a legendary professional gamer by night, and the two of them hatch a plan to bust Wyatt, and his grand Lego project, out of Sara’s apartment. Meanwhile, a shadowy figure named Kilroy—half internet-age demagogue, half mad-genius—has his own plans for Wyatt’s generation and the gridlocked gerontocracy of Passbook. The novel operates in a tragic-comedic mode, with elements of both satirical-nostalgic humor and profound disillusionment. Rather than make the easy jab at generational conflict and us-vs.-them thinking, Passbook enmires Wyatt in a shifting tangle of duty to his family (many of whom are “Posterity” users of Passbook, meaning they are deceased and therefore functionally immortal), to his own generation (friends, coworkers, and girlfriends, who he most relates to) and to himself (in the form of a hopeless struggle to grow up in a world of work that seems not to need or want him). Wyatt’s relationship with his father takes center-stage in the novel’s second half, as his work- and love-lives collapse around him, and force him to confront his grievances, some real and some imagined, with the man, the family, and to an extent the larger era that raised him

    Just as the printing press gave rise to the nation-state, emerging technologies are reshaping collective identities and challenging our understanding of what it means to be human. Should citizens have the right to be truly anonymous on-line? Should we be concerned about the fact that so many people are choosing to migrate to virtual worlds? Are injectible microscopic radio-frequency ID chips a blessing or a curse? Is the use of cognitive enhancing nootropics a human right or an unforgivable transgression? Should genomic data about human beings be hidden away with commercial patents or open-sourced like software? Should hobbyists known as biohackers be allowed to experiment with genetic engineering in their home laboratories? The time-frame for acting on such questions is relatively short, and these decisions are too important to be left up to a small handful of scientists and policymakers. If democracy is to continue as a viable alternative to technocracy, the average citizen must become more involved in these debates. To borrow a line from the computer visionary Ted Nelson, all of us can -- and must -- understand technology now. Challenging the popular stereotype of hackers as ciminal sociopaths, reality hackers uphold the basic tenets of what Steven Levy (1984) terms the hacker ethic.     Commissioning and System Integration Tests for an Industrial Manipulator Workstation

    Industrial systems are composed of several sub systems and architectures that are provided by different manufacturers. System integration aims at enabling a developer to combine these unit systems with limited functionality into one system that can accomplish the execution of required process. Modern integrated systems are developed on top of service-oriented architecture and use webservices for information exchange. Such systems are swiftly deployable and ensure platform interoperability, system adaptability and service reusability. Meanwhile, system integration tests help to reduce the complexity during the integration phase thus ensuring process uniformity. This thesis focuses on deploying a robotic manipulator in an industrial cell. The robot is in-stalled in the assembly line as service provider while services are invoked by using RESTful web services. Second objective of the thesis is to implement a free shape path planning algorithm for the deployed autonomous manipulator to follow the desired curve. The last component of this thesis is focused on developing integration tests to examine and verify the designed system. The robot was commissioned at the FASTory assembly line, installed at FAST lab of Tampere University. The free shape paths were implemented by interpolating Bezier curves using De Casteljau algorithm. System was successfully integrated and verified using Top-down depth first and bottom-up breadth first integration testing approaches

    Modding the Apocalypse: (Re)Making Videogames as Post-Structuralist Free Play

    This dissertation is about seeing videogames, and videogame design, through the lens of Gregory Ulmer ™s electracy apparatus theory. Videogame modding is emphasized an electrate approach to intervening in existing media. Mods have the potential to make potent rhetorical arguments, but they are little-understood in the field of rhet-comp, and there are numerous obstacles to carving a space for them in academic curricula; nevertheless, they are an increasingly common form of participatory engagement that make use of a broad digital skillset. Modders fit into Gregory Ulmer ™s electracy apparatus as egents ”agents of change in the Internet age ”and their playful appropriation of objects from various archives resembles the electrate genre of MyStory (personal alternative-history). By positioning modding as electrate composition praxis, a new gateway for academic game study and production is opened, one where play is integral to the process of knowledge formation. Fallout 4 (2016) serves as an example of a moddable game whose rhetorical affordances can be adapted to craft MyStories and MEmorials
