    Technological parables and iconic illustrations: American technocracy and the rhetoric of the technological fix

    This paper traces the role of American technocrats in popularizing the notion later dubbed the “technological fix”. Channeled by their long-term “chief”, Howard Scott, their claim was that technology always provides the most effective solution to modern social, cultural and political problems. The account focuses on the expression of this technological faith, and how it was proselytized, from the era of high industrialism between the World Wars through, and beyond, the nuclear age. I argue that the packaging and promotion of these ideas relied on allegorical technological tales and readily-absorbed graphic imagery. Combined with what Scott called “symbolization”, this seductive discourse preached beliefs about technology to broad audiences. The style and conviction of the messages were echoed by establishment figures such as National Lab director Alvin Weinberg, who employed the techniques to convert mainstream and elite audiences through the end of the twentieth centur

    The role of bone morphogenetic protein 2 in SMA-directed angiogenesis during distraction osteogenesis

    Bone is one of the few organs capable of regeneration after a substantial injury. As the bone heals itself after trauma, the coupling of angiogenesis to osteogenesis is crucial for the restoration of the skeletal tissue. In prior studies we have shown that Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (BMP2), a potent agonist for skeletal formation is expressed by vessels making it a prime candidate that links the morphogenesis of the two tissues. To investigate the role of BMP2 in the coordination of vessel and bone formation, we used a tamoxifen inducible Smooth Muscle Actin (SMA) promoter that conditionally expresses Cre recombinases crossed with a BMP2 floxed mouse in order to conditionally delete the BMP2 gene in smooth muscle actin (SMA) expressing cells. Using the mouse femur as our model for bone regeneration, we performed a surgical technique called distraction osteogenesis (DO) where an osteotomy is created followed by distraction or a gradual separation of the two pieces of bone. This primarily promotes intramembranous ossification at the osteotomy site by mechanical stimulation. Tamoxifen treatment started at day 6 and continued throughout the experiment. At post-operative days 3, 7, 12, 17, 24, and 31, we analyzed the bone and vessel formation by plain X-ray, micro-computed tomography (µCT) and vascular contrast enhanced µCT, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) of selective genes. We assessed both the femur and surrounding tissue to obtain qualitative and quantitative assessments for skeletal and vascular formation. Our results demonstrated that the deletion of BMP2 in vascular tissue resulted in a reduction of angiogenesis in vivo followed by a decrease in skeletal tissue development

    An Analysis of the art image interchange cycle within fine art museums

    The art image interchange cycle is the procedure carried out by fine art museums in reproducing fine artwork --starting with the imaging of the original work, then digital processing, and lastly, repurposing for output to achieve a high-quality replica in a range of possible media. There are many areas of importance within this process, such as digital image processing, standardization, test targets use, and color management. This research has sought to analyze the fine art image interchange through understanding the background areas and how they apply, as well as benchmarking what museums are already doing with the intention of improving and standardizing the process. Upon completion of an adequate background study of the literature (concentrated on color management theory, test targets use, and fine art reproduction) this research focused on four main areas. First, a review of international standards was established and how they can be used to benefit museums. Second, a review of test targets was conducted and how best they can be implemented in fine art reproduction. Third, a number of museum workflows were benchmarked and documented - a workflow experiment was created and implemented for documentation purposes (and future image quality analysis). Lastly, a case study was conducted of a local fine art museum\u27s process of creating a fine art catalog, to better understand an average museum\u27s fine art image interchange. The research concluded that the practice of standardization could be improved within museums. As far as test targets, there was a large range of understanding and use. The benchmarking of three museums was completed, and it was determined that the process of documenting workflow was a difficult task to have implemented.
