RegPrecise web services interface: programmatic access to the transcriptional regulatory interactions in bacteria reconstructed by comparative genomics.
Web services application programming interface (API) was developed to provide a programmatic access to the regulatory interactions accumulated in the RegPrecise database (http://regprecise.lbl.gov), a core resource on transcriptional regulation for the microbial domain of the Department of Energy (DOE) Systems Biology Knowledgebase. RegPrecise captures and visualize regulogs, sets of genes controlled by orthologous regulators in several closely related bacterial genomes, that were reconstructed by comparative genomics. The current release of RegPrecise 2.0 includes >1400 regulogs controlled either by protein transcription factors or by conserved ribonucleic acid regulatory motifs in >250 genomes from 24 taxonomic groups of bacteria. The reference regulons accumulated in RegPrecise can serve as a basis for automatic annotation of regulatory interactions in newly sequenced genomes. The developed API provides an efficient access to the RegPrecise data by a comprehensive set of 14 web service resources. FE Investigation of Perforated Sections with Standard and Non-Standard Web Opening Configurations and Sizes
The objective of this work is to investigate and compare, through an analytical study, the behaviour of perforated steel beams with different shape configurations and sizes of web openings. In this investigation the ‘Vierendeel’ failure mechanisms of steel beams with web openings are examined through a Finite Element study. The shear and flexural failures of standard perforated sections are controlled mainly by the size (i.e. depth) of the web openings, whilst the ‘Vierendeel’ mechanism is primarily controlled by the critical length of the web openings. Three main categories of web opening shape configurations and sizes are considered in this work. Standard, non-standard and elongated web opening configurations are examined, each with three different opening sizes. Four Advanced UB beams are used in the investigation in order to cover a range of sections and demonstrate the main differences in behaviour. The results of this comprehensive FE study are presented and include the position of plastic hinges, the critical opening length of perforated steel sections and the ‘Vierendeel’ parameters. The yield patterns and the failure modes do not differ dramatically. The results of this study are considered as relevant for practical applications as: (i) the reduction of the moment capacities of the tee-sections due to combination of axial and shear forces is smaller compared to the previous conservative linear interaction formula, and (ii) the formation of the initial plastic hinges at the low moment side (LMS) of the top tee-sections of the web openings does not usually cause failure, meaning that the beams can continue to carry additional load until all four plastic hinges are formed in the vicinity of the web openings and a ‘Vierendeel’ mechanism is fully established
Nondestructive interaction-free atom-photon controlled-NOT gate
We present a probabilistic (ideally 50%) nondestructive interaction-free
atom-photon controlled-NOT gate, where nondestructive means that all four
outgoing target photon modes of the gate are available and feed-forwardable.
Individual atoms are controlled by a stimulated Raman adiabatic passage
transition and photons by a ring resonator with two outgoing ports. Realistic
estimates we obtain for ions confined in a Paul trap around which the resonator
is mounted show that a strong atom-photon coupling can be achieved. It is also
shown how the resonator can be used for controlling superposition of atom

Privacy-Preserving Reengineering of Model-View-Controller Application Architectures Using Linked Data
When a legacy system’s software architecture cannot be redesigned, implementing
additional privacy requirements is often complex, unreliable and
costly to maintain. This paper presents a privacy-by-design approach to
reengineer web applications as linked data-enabled and implement access
control and privacy preservation properties. The method is based on the
knowledge of the application architecture, which for the Web of data is
commonly designed on the basis of a model-view-controller pattern. Whereas
wrapping techniques commonly used to link data of web applications duplicate
the security source code, the new approach allows for the controlled
disclosure of an application’s data, while preserving non-functional properties
such as privacy preservation. The solution has been implemented
and compared with existing linked data frameworks in terms of reliability,
maintainability and complexity
ELECTROCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF NEW 1,5-BENZODIAZEPINE DERIVATIVES

Well-defined oxidation peaks were observed in DMSO. The Electrochemical response of the glassy carbon electrode was evaluated as function of the scan rate, showing that the electron transfer process for compound (5) and (6) resulted to be controlled by diffusion.http://ref.scielo.org/3nfd9
The Interactive Minority Game: a Web based investigation of human market interactions
The unprecedented access offered by the World Wide Web brings with it the potential to gather huge amounts of data on human activities. Here we exploit this by using a toy model of financial markets, the Minority Game (MG), to investigate human speculative trading behaviour and information capacity. Hundreds of individuals have played a total of tens of thousands of game turns against computer-controlled agents in the Web-based Interactive Minority Game. The analytical understanding of the MG permits fine-tuning of the market situations encountered, allowing for investigation of human behaviour in a variety of controlled environments. In particular, our results indicate a transition in players' decision-making, as the markets become more difficult, between deductive behaviour making use of short-term trends in the market, and highly repetitive behaviour that ignores entirely the market history, yet outperforms random decision-making.Experimental economics and financial markets; Decision theory and game theory; Information theory
