The Creation Of Tools And Models To Characterize And Quantify User-centered Design Considerations In Product And System Developm
Ease of use differentiates products in a highly competitive market place. It also brings an added value that culminates in a higher degree of customer satisfaction, repeated business, increased sales, and higher revenue. User-centered design is a strategic asset that companies can use to improve their customer relationships by learning more about their customers, and increase their sales. In today\u27s economy, the measurement of intangible assets such as user experience has become a major need for industries because of the relationship between user-centered design and organizational benefits such as customer loyalty. As companies realize that the inclusion of user-centered design concepts in product or system design are a key component of attracting and maintaining customers, as well as increasing revenue, the need for quantitative methods to describe these benefits has become more urgent. The goal of this research is to develop a methodology to characterize user-centered design features, customer benefits and organizational benefits resulting from developing products using user-centered design principles through the use of an integrated framework of critical factors. Therefore, this research focuses on the identification of the most significant variables required to assess and measure the degree of user-centered design (UCD) characteristics included in the various aspects of product development such as physical design features, cognitive design attributes, industrial design aspects and user experience design considerations. Also this research focuses on the development of assessment tools for developers to use when evaluating the incorporation of user-centered design features in the creation of products and systems. In addition, a mathematical model to quantify the inclusion of UCD factors considered in the design of a product and systems is presented in this research. The results obtained using the assessment tools and the mathematical model can be employed to assess the customer benefits and organizational benefits resulting from including user-centered design features in the creation of products and systems. Overall, organizational benefits such as customer loyalty, company image, and profitability are expected to be impacted by the company\u27s capability to meet or exceed stated design claims and performance consistency while maintaining aesthetic appeal, long product life, and product usefulness. The successful completion of this research has produced many beneficial research findings. For example, it has helped characterize and develop descriptors for estimating critical quantitative and qualitative components, sub-components, and factors influencing user-centered design that are related to customer and organizational benefits through the use of fuzzy set modeling. In addition, the development of specific tools, methods, and techniques for evaluating and quantifying UCD components resulted from this study

Controllable Neural Synthesis for Natural Images and Vector Art
Neural image synthesis approaches have become increasingly popular over the last years due to their ability to generate photorealistic images useful for several applications, such as digital entertainment, mixed reality, synthetic dataset creation, computer art, to name a few. Despite the progress over the last years, current approaches lack two important aspects: (a) they often fail to capture long-range interactions in the image, and as a result, they fail to generate scenes with complex dependencies between their different objects or parts. (b) they often ignore the underlying 3D geometry of the shape/scene in the image, and as a result, they frequently lose coherency and details.My thesis proposes novel solutions to the above problems. First, I propose a neural transformer architecture that captures long-range interactions and context for image synthesis at high resolutions, leading to synthesizing interesting phenomena in scenes, such as reflections of landscapes onto water or flora consistent with the rest of the landscape, that was not possible to generate reliably with previous ConvNet- and other transformer-based approaches. The key idea of the architecture is to sparsify the transformer\u27s attention matrix at high resolutions, guided by dense attention extracted at lower image resolution. I present qualitative and quantitative results, along with user studies, demonstrating the effectiveness of the method, and its superiority compared to the state-of-the-art. Second, I propose a method that generates artistic images with the guidance of input 3D shapes. In contrast to previous methods, the use of a geometric representation of 3D shape enables the synthesis of more precise stylized drawings with fewer artifacts. My method outputs the synthesized images in a vector representation, enabling richer downstream analysis or editing in interactive applications. I also show that the method produces substantially better results than existing image-based methods, in terms of predicting artists’ drawings and in user evaluation of results
A Global Human Settlement Layer from optical high resolution imagery - Concept and first results
A general framework for processing of high and very-high resolution imagery for creating a Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) is presented together with a discussion on the results of the first operational test of the production workflow. The test involved the mapping of 24.3 millions of square kilometres of the Earth surface spread over four continents, corresponding to an estimated population of 1.3 billion of people in 2010. The resolution of the input image data ranges from 0.5 to 10 meters, collected by a heterogeneous set of platforms including satellite SPOT (2 and 5), CBERS-2B, RapidEye (2 and 4), WorldView (1 and 2), GeoEye-1, QuickBird-2, Ikonos-2, and airborne sensors. Several imaging modes were tested including panchromatic, multispectral and pan-sharpened images. A new fully automatic image information extraction, generalization and mosaic workflow is presented that is based on multiscale textural and morphological image features extraction. New image feature compression and optimization are introduced, together with new learning and classification techniques allowing for the processing of HR/VHR image data using low-resolution thematic layers as reference. A new systematic approach for quality control and validation allowing global spatial and thematic consistency checking is proposed and applied. The quality of the results are discussed by sensor, by band, by resolution, and eco-regions. Competitive importance performance analysis (CIPA): An illustration from thermal tourism destinations
This paper introduces a syntheses of traditional Importance-Performance Analysis and Analytical Hierarchy Process under the name of Competitive Importance-Performance Analysis (CIPA), to empower managers to make better decisions in creating competitive advantage. A questionnaire of a Turkish thermal tourism destination is utilized to illustrate the execution of the proposed approach. The results of the current case study illustrate the practicability and supplementary insights of specifying the priorities of attributes through the proposed approach for gaining competitive advantage. The results suggested that, from the expert’s perspective, plentiful natural hot springs, sound local transportation network, availability of sufficient accommodation, hygiene standards for hot springs spa equipment, public interest in health-leisure activities are important factors shaping the competitiveness of thermal tourism destinations. Therefore, thermal tourism destinations in Turkey might focus more on these attributes to gain competitive advantage. Moreover, increase in visitors seeking for health-oriented leisure time is increasing and hence the future of Turkish thermal tourism seems encouraging. Hence, the adapted undertakings will be required by augmenting the core thermal tourism product to reach the competitors
