Diseño para operabilidad: Una revisión de enfoques y estrategias de solución
In the last decades the chemical engineering scientific research community has largely addressed the design-foroperability problem. Such an interest responds to the fact that the operability quality of a process is determined by design, becoming evident the convenience of considering operability issues in early design stages rather than later when the impact of modifications is less effective and more expensive. The necessity of integrating design and operability is dictated by the increasing complexity of the processes as result of progressively stringent economic, quality, safety and environmental constraints. Although the design-for-operability problem concerns to practically every technical discipline, it has achieved a particular identity within the chemical engineering field due to the economic magnitude of the involved processes. The work on design and analysis for operability in chemical engineering is really vast and a complete review in terms of papers is beyond the scope of this contribution. Instead, two major approaches will be addressed and those papers that in our belief had the most significance to the development of the field will be described in some detail. Fil: Blanco, Anibal Manuel. Finite-time behavior of inner systems
In this paper, we investigate how nonminimum phase characteristics of a dynamical system affect its controllability and tracking properties. For the class of linear time-invariant dynamical systems, these characteristics are determined by transmission zeros of the inner factor of the system transfer function. The relation between nonminimum phase zeros and Hankel singular values of inner systems is studied and it is shown how the singular value structure of a suitably defined operator provides relevant insight about system invertibility and achievable tracking performance. The results are used to solve various tracking problems both on finite as well as on infinite time horizons. A typical receding horizon control scheme is considered and new conditions are derived to guarantee stabilizability of a receding horizon controller
Risks in production and the management of labour
The paper considers a (static) portfolio system that satisfies adding-up contraints and the gross substitution theorem. The paper shows the relationship of the two conditions to the weak dominant diagonal property of the matrix of interest rate elasticities. This enables to investigate the impact of simultaneous changes in interest rates on the asset demands.
Design-Time Quantification of Integrity in Cyber-Physical-Systems
In a software system it is possible to quantify the amount of information
that is leaked or corrupted by analysing the flows of information present in
the source code. In a cyber-physical system, information flows are not only
present at the digital level, but also at a physical level, and to and fro the
two levels. In this work, we provide a methodology to formally analyse a
Cyber-Physical System composite model (combining physics and control) using an
information flow-theoretic approach. We use this approach to quantify the level
of vulnerability of a system with respect to attackers with different
capabilities. We illustrate our approach by means of a water distribution case

Carbon capture from natural gas combined cycle power plants: Solvent performance comparison at an industrial scale
Natural gas is an important source of energy. This article addresses the problem of integrating an existing natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) power plant with a carbon capture process using various solvents. The power plant and capture process have mutual interactions in terms of the flue gas flow rate and composition vs. the extracted steam required for solvent regeneration. Therefore, evaluating solvent performance at a single (nominal) operating point is not indicative and solvent performance should be considered subject to the overall process operability and over a wide range of operating conditions. In the present research, a novel optimization framework was developed in which design and operation of the capture process are optimized simultaneously and their interactions with the upstream power plant are fully captured. The developed framework was applied for solvent comparison which demonstrated that GCCmax, a newly developed solvent, features superior performances compared to the monoethanolamine baseline solvent
Renewable energy balancing with thermal grid support
Waste heat valorisation in process industry is a common strategy today. The residual heat is converted to electricity by using steam turbines or organic Rankine cycles. As this energy conversion is likely constructed as an integral cooling capacity for the primary process, loss of electricity production will result in reduced process cooling and hence production capacity loss. This restriction prevents these generators to deliver supporting services to the electrical grid. In this paper, it is proven that coupling waste heat recovery with a district heating network provides flexibility to the electricity generation while ensuring cooling capacity to the process. This flexibility can be utilised by a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), e. g., to compensate for the variable output of renewable energy sources. Today, the power fluctuations are only compensated by traditional power plants (gas, coal) due to the scale and flexibility of these power plants. In this paper, a strategy is defined to balance variable (renewable) production with industrial waste heat. As such, some grid support tasks can be transferred from the central power plants to decentralised generation units. The backup of the variable sources is provided by utilising the local available capacity, while maintaining or improving energy efficiency of exothermal industrial processes. Operational boundaries are defined and new challenges identified. In this paper, firstly, the heat sources available for this concept are identified. Secondly, the properties of the different conversion technologies are described. Thirdly, the benefits of a virtual power plant utilising waste heat are determined. Finally, this VPP concept is verified by means of a case study in Belgium, Ostend Energy port. Available heat from biomass, chemical processing and waste incineration is used as primary energy source to balance local renewable production
Integrated design and control of chemical processes : part I : revision and clasification
[EN] This work presents a comprehensive classification of the different methods and procedures for integrated synthesis, design and control of chemical processes, based on a wide revision of recent literature. This classification fundamentally differentiates between “projecting methods”, where controllability is monitored during the process design to predict the trade-offs between design and control, and the “integrated-optimization methods” which solve the process design and the control-systems design at once within an optimization framework. The latter are revised categorizing them according to the methods to evaluate controllability and other related properties, the scope of the design problem, the treatment of uncertainties and perturbations, and finally, the type the optimization problem formulation and the methods for its resolution.[ES] Este trabajo presenta una clasificaciĂłn integral de los diferentes mĂ©todos y procedimientos para la sĂntesis integrada, diseño y control de procesos quĂmicos.
The contribution of quality aspects to process control
Process operators often have difficulties with quality supervision and control for the following reasons: (i) analytical results are infrequent and much delayed, (ii) conventional automatic control cannot sufficiently reduce quality deviations, and (iii) several set values can be candidates for correction of quality deviations. Control performance is discussed with regard to these problems, in relation to the degree of buffering, and types of process perturbations and measuring errors. Some methods are discussed for improving the situation, namely, on-line quality estimation from simpler measurements, and integration of off-line quality measurements and on-line quality measurement and estimation by means of state estimators
