    ABSTRACT — Bouncing, balancing and swinging the leg forward can be considered as three basic control tasks for bipedal locomotion. Defining the trunk by an unstable inverted pendulum, balancing as being translated to trunk stabilization is the main focus of this paper. The control strategy is to generate a hip torque to have upright trunk to achieve robust hopping and running. It relies on the Virtual Pendulum (VP) concept which is recently proposed for trunk stabilization, based on human/animal locomotion analysis. Based on this concept, a control approach, named Virtual Pendulum Posture control (VPPC) is presented, in which the trunk is stabilized by redirecting the ground reaction force to a virtual support point. The required torques patterns generated by the controller, could partially be exerted by elastic structures like hip springs. Hybrid Zero Dynamics (HZD) control approach is also applied as an exact method of keeping the trunk upright. Stability of the motion which is investigated by Poincare ´ map analysis could be achieved by hip springs, VPPC and HZD. The results show that hip springs, revealing muscle properties, could facilitate trunk stabilization. Compliance in hip produces acceptable performance and robustness compared with VPPC and HZD, while it is a passive structure

    Motor patterns during walking on a slippery walkway

    Friction and gravity represent two basic physical constraints of terrestrial locomotion that affect both motor patterns and the biomechanics of bipedal gait. To provide insights into the spatiotemporal organization of the motor output in connection with ground contact forces, we studied adaptation of human gait to steady low-friction conditions. Subjects walked along a slippery walkway (7 m long; friction coefficient approximately 0.06) or a normal, nonslippery floor at a natural speed. We recorded gait kinematics, ground reaction forces, and bilateral electromyographic (EMG) activity of 16 leg and trunk muscles and we mapped the recorded EMG patterns onto the spinal cord in approximate rostrocaudal locations of the motoneuron (MN) pools to characterize the spatiotemporal organization of the motor output. The results revealed several idiosyncratic features of walking on the slippery surface. The step length, cycle duration, and horizontal shear forces were significantly smaller, the head orientation tended to be stabilized in space, whereas arm movements, trunk rotations, and lateral trunk inclinations considerably increased and foot motion and gait kinematics resembled those of a nonplantigrade gait. Furthermore, walking on the slippery surface required stabilization of the hip and of the center-of-body mass in the frontal plane, which significantly improved with practice. Motor patterns were characterized by an enhanced (roughly twofold) level of MN activity, substantial decoupling of anatomical synergists, and the absence of systematic displacements of the center of MN activity in the lumbosacral enlargement. Overall, the results show that when subjects are confronted with unsteady surface conditions, like the slippery floor, they adopt a gait mode that tends to keep the COM centered over the supporting limbs and to increase limb stiffness. We suggest that this behavior may represent a distinct gait mode that is particularly suited to uncertain surface conditions in general

    Biped Robots With Compliant Joints for Walking and Running Performance Growing

    This paper deals with the problem of compliance in biped robots locomotion. After a first literature review, we designed and simulated a 3D virtual model of a biped robot conceived with the same link dimensions (and weights) of a standard man. In all simulation, the same input to the robot actuators are proposed, modifying only the compliance of the attached links. We first validated the model and then compared results increasing and reducing compliance on hip, knee and ankle joints. The very good results underline how the robot performances may be increased including the compliant element in the knee. In particular, we noted how including a proper value of the compliance in the knee, power and torque of the actuators may be reduced increasing robot speed

    A comprehensive gaze stabilization controller based on cerebellar internal models

    Gaze stabilization is essential for clear vision; it is the combined effect of two reflexes relying on vestibular inputs: the vestibulocollic reflex (VCR), which stabilizes the head in space and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), which stabilizes the visual axis to minimize retinal image motion. The VOR works in conjunction with the opto-kinetic reflex (OKR), which is a visual feedback mechanism that allows the eye to move at the same speed as the observed scene. Together they keep the image stationary on the retina. In this work, we implement on a humanoid robot a model of gaze stabilization based on the coordination of VCR, VOR and OKR. The model, inspired by neuroscientific cerebellar theories, is provided with learning and adaptation capabilities based on internal models. We present the results for the gaze stabilization model on three sets of experiments conducted on the SABIAN robot and on the iCub simulator, validating the robustness of the proposed control method. The first set of experiments focused on the controller response to a set of disturbance frequencies along the vertical plane. The second shows the performances of the system under three-dimensional disturbances. The last set of experiments was carried out to test the capability of the proposed model to stabilize the gaze in locomotion tasks. The results confirm that the proposed model is beneficial in all cases reducing the retinal slip (velocity of the image on the retina) and keeping the orientation of the head stable

    Optimization of Humanoid Robot Leg Movement Using Open CM 9.04

    The Indonesian Robot Dance Contest (KRSTI) is a branch of the Indonesian Robot Contest (KRI) with the theme of dance. The robot used is a humanoid robot that can dance. Every year at the event, the provisions for robots constantly change, both the type of dance being demonstrated and the requirements for the robot's height. The taller the robot, the more difficult it is to control its walking movements because of the load it carries. This study uses a suitable algorithm to make the walking movement more natural and minimize the robot's falling. Human ROM data is used as a parameter for the range of motion of the servos that act as joints in the robot's legs. The algorithm created serves to determine the initial position of the angle on the servo to avoid the wrong initial movement position between one servo and another. The robot used is the Bioloid Robot’s leg Type A and uses OpenCM 9.04-A as the controller. The results showed that ROM on human feet could not be fully implemented on robot legs due to the robot's structure and the need for a robot that only relies on an algorithm to find the correct fulcrum to maintain balance. The comparison results show that the movement when walking on the ankle (ID servo 15) ranges from 749-567, while the ROM range is only between 580-512. When walking (servo ID 16), movement ranges from 460-291, while the ROM range ranges from 580-512

    Real-time biped character stepping

    PhD ThesisA rudimentary biped activity that is essential in interactive evirtual worlds, such as video-games and training simulations, is stepping. For example, stepping is fundamental in everyday terrestrial activities that include walking and balance recovery. Therefore an effective 3D stepping control algorithm that is computationally fast and easy to implement is extremely valuable and important to character animation research. This thesis focuses on generating real-time controllable stepping motions on-the-fly without key-framed data that are responsive and robust (e.g.,can remain upright and balanced under a variety of conditions, such as pushes and dynami- cally changing terrain). In our approach, we control the character’s direction and speed by means of varying the stepposition and duration. Our lightweight stepping model is used to create coordinated full-body motions, which produce directable steps to guide the character with specific goals (e.g., following a particular path while placing feet at viable locations). We also create protective steps in response to random disturbances (e.g., pushes). Whereby, the system automatically calculates where and when to place the foot to remedy the disruption. In conclusion, the inverted pendulum has a number of limitations that we address and resolve to produce an improved lightweight technique that provides better control and stability using approximate feature enhancements, for instance, ankle-torque and elongated-body

    Control of human gait stability through foot placement

    During human walking, the centre of mass (CoM) is outside the base of support for most of the time, which poses a challenge to stabilizing the gait pattern. Nevertheless, most of us are able to walk without substantial problems. In this review, we aim to provide an integrative overview of how humans cope with an underactuated gait pattern. A central idea that emerges from the literature is that foot placement is crucial in maintaining a stable gait pattern. In this review, we explore this idea; we first describe mechanical models and concepts that have been used to predict how foot placement can be used to control gait stability. These concepts, such as for instance the extrapolated CoM concept, the foot placement estimator concept and the capture point concept, provide explicit predictions on where to place the foot relative to the body at each step, such that gait is stabilized. Next, we describe empirical findings on foot placement during human gait in unperturbed and perturbed conditions. We conclude that humans show behaviour that is largely in accordance with the aforementioned concepts, with foot placement being actively coordinated to body CoM kinematics during the preceding step. In this section, we also address the requirements for such control in terms of the sensory information and the motor strategies that can implement such control, as well as the parts of the central nervous system that may be involved. We show that visual, vestibular and proprioceptive information contribute to estimation of the state of the CoM. Foot placement is adjusted to variations in CoM state mainly by modulation of hip abductor muscle activity during the swing phase of gait, and this process appears to be under spinal and supraspinal, including cortical, control. We conclude with a description of how control of foot placement can be impaired in humans, using ageing as a primary example and with some reference to pathology, and we address alternative strategies available to stabilize gait, which include modulation of ankle moments in the stance leg and changes in body angular momentum, such as rapid trunk tilts. Finally, for future research, we believe that especially the integration of consideration of environmental constraints on foot placement with balance control deserves attention
