    A Partially Randomized Approach to Trajectory Planning and Optimization for Mobile Robots with Flat Dynamics

    Motion planning problems are characterized by huge search spaces and complex obstacle structures with no concise mathematical expression. The fixed-wing airplane application considered in this thesis adds differential constraints and point-wise bounds, i. e. an infinite number of equality and inequality constraints. An optimal trajectory planning approach is presented, based on the randomized Rapidly-exploring Random Trees framework (RRT*). The local planner relies on differential flatness of the equations of motion to obtain tree branch candidates that automatically satisfy the differential constraints. Flat output trajectories, in this case equivalent to the airplane's flight path, are designed using Bézier curves. Segment feasibility in terms of point-wise inequality constraints is tested by an indicator integral, which is evaluated alongside the segment cost functional. Although the RRT* guarantees optimality in the limit of infinite planning time, it is argued by intuition and experimentation that convergence is not approached at a practically useful rate. Therefore, the randomized planner is augmented by a deterministic variational optimization technique. To this end, the optimal planning task is formulated as a semi-infinite optimization problem, using the intermediate result of the RRT(*) as an initial guess. The proposed optimization algorithm follows the feasible flavor of the primal-dual interior point paradigm. Discretization of functional (infinite) constraints is deferred to the linear subproblems, where it is realized implicitly by numeric quadrature. An inherent numerical ill-conditioning of the method is circumvented by a reduction-like approach, which tracks active constraint locations by introducing new problem variables. Obstacle avoidance is achieved by extending the line search procedure and dynamically adding obstacle-awareness constraints to the problem formulation. Experimental evaluation confirms that the hybrid approach is practically feasible and does indeed outperform RRT*'s built-in optimization mechanism, but the computational burden is still significant.Bewegungsplanungsaufgaben sind typischerweise gekennzeichnet durch umfangreiche Suchräume, deren vollständige Exploration nicht praktikabel ist, sowie durch unstrukturierte Hindernisse, für die nur selten eine geschlossene mathematische Beschreibung existiert. Bei der in dieser Arbeit betrachteten Anwendung auf Flächenflugzeuge kommen differentielle Randbedingungen und beschränkte Systemgrößen erschwerend hinzu. Der vorgestellte Ansatz zur optimalen Trajektorienplanung basiert auf dem Rapidly-exploring Random Trees-Algorithmus (RRT*), welcher die Suchraumkomplexität durch Randomisierung beherrschbar macht. Der spezifische Beitrag ist eine Realisierung des lokalen Planers zur Generierung der Äste des Suchbaums. Dieser erfordert ein flaches Bewegungsmodell, sodass differentielle Randbedingungen automatisch erfüllt sind. Die Trajektorien des flachen Ausgangs, welche im betrachteten Beispiel der Flugbahn entsprechen, werden mittels Bézier-Kurven entworfen. Die Einhaltung der Ungleichungsnebenbedingungen wird durch ein Indikator-Integral überprüft, welches sich mit wenig Zusatzaufwand parallel zum Kostenfunktional berechnen lässt. Zwar konvergiert der RRT*-Algorithmus (im probabilistischen Sinne) zu einer optimalen Lösung, jedoch ist die Konvergenzrate aus praktischer Sicht unbrauchbar langsam. Es ist daher naheliegend, den Planer durch ein gradientenbasiertes lokales Optimierungsverfahren mit besseren Konvergenzeigenschaften zu unterstützen. Hierzu wird die aktuelle Zwischenlösung des Planers als Initialschätzung für ein kompatibles semi-infinites Optimierungsproblem verwendet. Der vorgeschlagene Optimierungsalgorithmus erweitert das verbreitete innere-Punkte-Konzept (primal dual interior point method) auf semi-infinite Probleme. Eine explizite Diskretisierung der funktionalen Ungleichungsnebenbedingungen ist nicht erforderlich, denn diese erfolgt implizit durch eine numerische Integralauswertung im Rahmen der linearen Teilprobleme. Da die Methode an Stellen aktiver Nebenbedingungen nicht wohldefiniert ist, kommt zusätzlich eine Variante des Reduktions-Ansatzes zum Einsatz, bei welcher der Vektor der Optimierungsvariablen um die (endliche) Menge der aktiven Indizes erweitert wird. Weiterhin wurde eine Kollisionsvermeidung integriert, die in den Teilschritt der Liniensuche eingreift und die Problemformulierung dynamisch um Randbedingungen zur lokalen Berücksichtigung von Hindernissen erweitert. Experimentelle Untersuchungen bestätigen, dass die Ergebnisse des hybriden Ansatzes aus RRT(*) und numerischem Optimierungsverfahren der klassischen RRT*-basierten Trajektorienoptimierung überlegen sind. Der erforderliche Rechenaufwand ist zwar beträchtlich, aber unter realistischen Bedingungen praktisch beherrschbar

    Virtual reality simulation of a quadrotor to monitor dependent people at home

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) represent an assistance solution for home care of dependent persons. These aircraft can cover the home, accompany the person, and position themselves to take photographs that can be analyzed to determine the person's mood and the assistance needed. In this context, this work principally aims to design a tool to aid in the development and validation of the navigation algorithms of an autonomous vision-based UAV for monitoring dependent people. For that, a distributed architecture has been proposed based on the real-time communication of two modules, one of them in charge of the dynamics of the UAV, the trajectory planning and the control algorithms, and the other devoted to visualizing the simulation in an immersive virtual environment. Thus, a system has been developed that allows the evaluation of the behavior of the assistant UAV from a technological point of view, as well as to carry out studies from the assisted person's viewpoint. Automation and robotics form broad-spectrum areas of research, which are tightly interconnected. To reduce costs in the pre-production stage and to reduce production preparation time, it is necessary to solve complex tasks in the form of simulation with the use of standard software products and new technologies that allow, for example, machine vision and other imaging tools to examine new physical contexts, dependencies and connections

    Vision-based methods for state estimation and control of robotic systems with application to mobile and surgical robots

    For autonomous systems that need to perceive the surrounding environment for the accomplishment of a given task, vision is a highly informative exteroceptive sensory source. When gathering information from the available sensors, in fact, the richness of visual data allows to provide a complete description of the environment, collecting geometrical and semantic information (e.g., object pose, distances, shapes, colors, lights). The huge amount of collected data allows to consider both methods exploiting the totality of the data (dense approaches), or a reduced set obtained from feature extraction procedures (sparse approaches). This manuscript presents dense and sparse vision-based methods for control and sensing of robotic systems. First, a safe navigation scheme for mobile robots, moving in unknown environments populated by obstacles, is presented. For this task, dense visual information is used to perceive the environment (i.e., detect ground plane and obstacles) and, in combination with other sensory sources, provide an estimation of the robot motion with a linear observer. On the other hand, sparse visual data are extrapolated in terms of geometric primitives, in order to implement a visual servoing control scheme satisfying proper navigation behaviours. This controller relies on visual estimated information and is designed in order to guarantee safety during navigation. In addition, redundant structures are taken into account to re-arrange the internal configuration of the robot and reduce its encumbrance when the workspace is highly cluttered. Vision-based estimation methods are relevant also in other contexts. In the field of surgical robotics, having reliable data about unmeasurable quantities is of great importance and critical at the same time. In this manuscript, we present a Kalman-based observer to estimate the 3D pose of a suturing needle held by a surgical manipulator for robot-assisted suturing. The method exploits images acquired by the endoscope of the robot platform to extrapolate relevant geometrical information and get projected measurements of the tool pose. This method has also been validated with a novel simulator designed for the da Vinci robotic platform, with the purpose to ease interfacing and employment in ideal conditions for testing and validation. The Kalman-based observers mentioned above are classical passive estimators, whose system inputs used to produce the proper estimation are theoretically arbitrary. This does not provide any possibility to actively adapt input trajectories in order to optimize specific requirements on the performance of the estimation. For this purpose, active estimation paradigm is introduced and some related strategies are presented. More specifically, a novel active sensing algorithm employing visual dense information is described for a typical Structure-from-Motion (SfM) problem. The algorithm generates an optimal estimation of a scene observed by a moving camera, while minimizing the maximum uncertainty of the estimation. This approach can be applied to any robotic platforms and has been validated with a manipulator arm equipped with a monocular camera

    Developing a Silicon Pixel Detector for the Next Generation LHCb Experiment

    The second long shutdown of the LHC presents an opportunity for the LHCb experiment to upgrade its detector systems and switch to a fully software triggered readout. Its first tracking layer, the VELO detector, is no exception to this and is undergoing an upgrade increasing the number of sensitive channels from 180 thousand silicon microstrips to about 41 million pixels. The new system will operate with zero-suppressed readout at 40 MHz, while cooled down using evaporative liquid CO2_2 in silicon microchannel plates. The VELO Upgrade will consist of 52 modules, placed around the beam-pipe, built at the University of Manchester and Nikhef. The construction of the modules is a complex process that consists of a number of tight tolerance steps, their results verified both in metrology and in the electrical and thermal performance testing. In order to store data and track the performance a database has been developed, used to automatically analyse the uploaded values as well as compute the grades and quality of the individual steps and final modules. By the end of August 2021, 42 modules have been produced in Manchester, 37 of them with high quality and no issues present. Due to the nature of the harsh radiation environment, the sensors have to withstand a fluence up to 1e16 1 MeV neqcm2_\mathrm{eq} \mathrm{cm^{-2}} and still provide a good signal to noise ratio. A new method of a charge collection scan has been proposed, linking the commonly used voltage scan with a threshold scan and using the extrapolated tracking information to estimate the amount of collected charge. The simulation indicates that the scan of a subset of modules will take about 8 min, a feasible duration despite the impact on the physics data taking. A further upgrade of the LHCb is planned for Long Shutdown four of the LHC. This will operate at higher luminosities leading to a significant increase in the pile-up of the collisions from a single proton-proton bunch crossing. For this reason a precise time stamping O\mathcal{O}(50 ps) is to be added. This could be achieved in silicon detectors by using O\mathcal{O}(10) internal gain in the sensor. Simulations of the expected performance of a recently produced batch of sensors are presented. These characterise the anticipated performance of these O\mathcal{O}(50 μ\mum) segmented devices in a test beam, providing the impact of charge sharing and device response to an angular scan

    Flexible Supervised Autonomy for Exploration in Subterranean Environments

    While the capabilities of autonomous systems have been steadily improving in recent years, these systems still struggle to rapidly explore previously unknown environments without the aid of GPS-assisted navigation. The DARPA Subterranean (SubT) Challenge aimed to fast track the development of autonomous exploration systems by evaluating their performance in real-world underground search-and-rescue scenarios. Subterranean environments present a plethora of challenges for robotic systems, such as limited communications, complex topology, visually-degraded sensing, and harsh terrain. The presented solution enables long-term autonomy with minimal human supervision by combining a powerful and independent single-agent autonomy stack, with higher level mission management operating over a flexible mesh network. The autonomy suite deployed on quadruped and wheeled robots was fully independent, freeing the human supervision to loosely supervise the mission and make high-impact strategic decisions. By integrating the best design practices with the most advanced technologies, mechatronics aims at realizing high-quality products, guaranteeing at the same time a substantial reduction of time and costs of manufacturing. Mechatronic systems are manifold and range from machine components, motion generators, and power producing machines to more complex devices, such as robotic systems and transportation vehicles. With its twenty chapters, which collect contributions from many researchers worldwide, this book provides an excellent survey of recent work in the field of mechatronics with applications in various fields, like robotics, medical and assistive technology, human-machine interaction, unmanned vehicles, manufacturing, and education. We would like to thank all the authors who have invested a great deal of time to write such interesting chapters, which we are sure will be valuable to the readers. Chapters 1 to 6 deal with applications of mechatronics for the development of robotic systems. Medical and assistive technologies and human-machine interaction systems are the topic of chapters 7 to 13.Chapters 14 and 15 concern mechatronic systems for autonomous vehicles. Chapters 16-19 deal with mechatronics in manufacturing contexts. Chapter 20 concludes the book, describing a method for the installation of mechatronics education in schools
