A Comparative Analysis of Ensemble Classifiers: Case Studies in Genomics
The combination of multiple classifiers using ensemble methods is
increasingly important for making progress in a variety of difficult prediction
problems. We present a comparative analysis of several ensemble methods through
two case studies in genomics, namely the prediction of genetic interactions and
protein functions, to demonstrate their efficacy on real-world datasets and
draw useful conclusions about their behavior. These methods include simple
aggregation, meta-learning, cluster-based meta-learning, and ensemble selection
using heterogeneous classifiers trained on resampled data to improve the
diversity of their predictions. We present a detailed analysis of these methods
across 4 genomics datasets and find the best of these methods offer
statistically significant improvements over the state of the art in their
respective domains. In addition, we establish a novel connection between
ensemble selection and meta-learning, demonstrating how both of these disparate

kLog: A Language for Logical and Relational Learning with Kernels
We introduce kLog, a novel approach to statistical relational learning.
Unlike standard approaches, kLog does not represent a probability distribution
directly. It is rather a language to perform kernel-based learning on
expressive logical and relational representations. kLog allows users to specify
learning problems declaratively. It builds on simple but powerful concepts:
learning from interpretations, entity/relationship data modeling, logic
programming, and deductive databases. Access by the kernel to the rich
representation is mediated by a technique we call graphicalization: the
relational representation is first transformed into a graph --- in particular,
a grounded entity/relationship diagram. Subsequently, a choice of graph kernel
defines the feature space. kLog supports mixed numerical and symbolic data, as
well as background knowledge in the form of Prolog or Datalog programs as in
inductive logic programming systems. The kLog framework can be applied to
tackle the same range of tasks that has made statistical relational learning so
popular, including classification, regression, multitask learning, and
collective classification. We also report about empirical comparisons, showing
that kLog can be either more accurate, or much faster at the same level of
accuracy, than Tilde and Alchemy. kLog is GPLv3 licensed and is available at

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation on Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension (RC) has been studied in a variety of datasets with the
boosted performance brought by deep neural networks. However, the
generalization capability of these models across different domains remains
unclear. To alleviate this issue, we are going to investigate unsupervised
domain adaptation on RC, wherein a model is trained on labeled source domain
and to be applied to the target domain with only unlabeled samples. We first
show that even with the powerful BERT contextual representation, the
performance is still unsatisfactory when the model trained on one dataset is
directly applied to another target dataset. To solve this, we provide a novel
conditional adversarial self-training method (CASe). Specifically, our approach
leverages a BERT model fine-tuned on the source dataset along with the
confidence filtering to generate reliable pseudo-labeled samples in the target
domain for self-training. On the other hand, it further reduces domain
distribution discrepancy through conditional adversarial learning across
domains. Extensive experiments show our approach achieves comparable accuracy

Building Program Vector Representations for Deep Learning
Deep learning has made significant breakthroughs in various fields of
artificial intelligence. Advantages of deep learning include the ability to
capture highly complicated features, weak involvement of human engineering,
etc. However, it is still virtually impossible to use deep learning to analyze
programs since deep architectures cannot be trained effectively with pure back
propagation. In this pioneering paper, we propose the "coding criterion" to
build program vector representations, which are the premise of deep learning
for program analysis. Our representation learning approach directly makes deep
learning a reality in this new field. We evaluate the learned vector
representations both qualitatively and quantitatively. We conclude, based on
the experiments, the coding criterion is successful in building program
representations. To evaluate whether deep learning is beneficial for program
analysis, we feed the representations to deep neural networks, and achieve
higher accuracy in the program classification task than "shallow" methods, such
as logistic regression and the support vector machine. This result confirms the
feasibility of deep learning to analyze programs. It also gives primary
evidence of its success in this new field. We believe deep learning will become
