Contour Enhancement Algorithm for Improving Visual Perception of Deutan and Protan Dichromats
A variety of recoloring methods has been proposed in the literature to remedy the problem of confusing red-green colors faced by dichromat people (as well by other color-blinded people). The common strategy to mitigate this problem is to remap colors to other colors. But, it is clear this does not guarantee neither the necessary contrast to distinguish the elements of an image, nor the naturalness of colors learnt from past experience of each individual. In other words, the individual’s perceptual learning may not hold under color remapping. With this in mind, we introduce the first algorithm primarily focused on the enhancement of object contours in still images, instead of recoloring the pixels of the regions bounded by such contours. This is particularly adequate to increase contrast in images where we find adjacent regions that are color-indistinguishable from the dichromacy’s point of view.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Adaptive Methods for Color Vision Impaired Users
Color plays a key role in the understanding of the information in computer environments. It
happens that about 5% of the world population is affected by color vision deficiency (CVD),
also called color blindness. This visual impairment hampers the color perception, ending up by
limiting the overall perception that CVD people have about the surrounding environment, no
matter it is real or virtual. In fact, a CVD individual may not distinguish between two different
colors, what often originates confusion or a biased understanding of the reality, including web
environments, whose web pages are plenty of media elements like text, still images, video,
sprites, and so on.
Aware of the difficulties that color-blind people may face in interpreting colored contents,
a significant number of recoloring algorithms have been proposed in the literature with the
purpose of improving the visual perception of those people somehow. However, most of those
algorithms lack a systematic study of subjective assessment, what undermines their validity, not
to say usefulness. Thus, in the sequel of the research work behind this Ph.D. thesis, the central
question that needs to be answered is whether recoloring algorithms are of any usefulness and
help for colorblind people or not.
With this in mind, we conceived a few preliminary recoloring algorithms that were published in
conference proceedings elsewhere. Except the algorithm detailed in Chapter 3, these conference
algorithms are not described in this thesis, though they have been important to engender
those presented here. The first algorithm (Chapter 3) was designed and implemented for people
with dichromacy to improve their color perception. The idea is to project the reddish hues onto
other hues that are perceived more regularly by dichromat people.
The second algorithm (Chapter 4) is also intended for people with dichromacy to improve their
perception of color, but its applicability covers the adaptation of text and image, in HTML5-
compliant web environments. This enhancement of color contrast of text and imaging in web
pages is done while keeping the naturalness of color as much as possible. Also, to the best of our
knowledge, this is the first web recoloring approach targeted to dichromat people that takes
into consideration both text and image recoloring in an integrated manner.
The third algorithm (Chapter 5) primarily focuses on the enhancement of some of the object
contours in still images, instead of recoloring the pixels of the regions bounded by such contours.
Enhancing contours is particularly suited to increase contrast in images, where we find adjacent
regions that are color indistinguishable from dichromat’s point of view. To our best knowledge,
this is one of the first algorithms that take advantage of image analysis and processing techniques
for region contours.
After accurate subjective assessment studies for color-blind people, we concluded that the CVD
adaptation methods are useful in general. Nevertheless, each method is not efficient enough to
adapt all sorts of images, that is, the adequacy of each method depends on the type of image
(photo-images, graphical representations, etc.).
Furthermore, we noted that the experience-based perceptual learning of colorblind people
throughout their lives determines their visual perception. That is, color adaptation algorithms must satisfy requirements such as color naturalness and consistency, to ensure that dichromat
people improve their visual perception without artifacts. On the other hand, CVD adaptation
algorithms should be object-oriented, instead of pixel-oriented (as typically done), to select
judiciously pixels that should be adapted. This perspective opens an opportunity window for
future research in color accessibility in the field of in human-computer interaction (HCI).A cor desempenha um papel fundamental na compreensão da informação em ambientes computacionais.
Assim, a principal
A ideia consiste
ver no mundo real.

The Effect of Training upon Faculty Stages of Concern about Making Color Vision Deficiency Adaptations
Although color vision deficiency affects an appreciable portion of the human race, those with the condition do not enjoy mandatory educational accommodations. The purpose of this quasi-experimental investigation was to quantify the effect of professional development training on university faculty concerns about adapting their instruction for color vision deficiency. This investigation used a static-group comparison design with a professional development intervention for the experimental group at a liberal arts university (N = 98) in the Southeast of the United States, collecting data through an online fielding of the Stages of Concern Questionnaire. Independent Samples t Tests between the two groups revealed no statistically significant differences in means of raw scores (alpha level of .014) for the stages 0 through 5 concerns. However, the results did show a statistically significant increase (p \u3c .001) for stage 6 concerns, suggesting that the training did change the concerns of the experimental group participants about exploring and desiring other options for adjusting their instruction for color vision deficiency. Such responses are suggestive that the training may have raised resistance to implementing instructional adaptations for color vision deficiency. These results provide research-based knowledge to guide collegiate leadership in making policy about these optional adaptations, and suggest that future research about making instruction more accessible for color deficient students should focus on institutionally-based, rather than instructor-based, initiatives
daltonismo. The present report addresses and describe the process of development of a master’s final
project in the area of Virtual Reality (VR) entitled Reflexo. The project exposes important
definitions for learning and understanding the concepts, contextualization and
techniques of virtual reality, color and color blindness.
Reflexo uses VR to explore the problem of color perception and is inspired by the
difficulties imposed by color blindness. It boils down to the creation of virtual immersive
environments that simulate, with an artistic approach, the different types of total color
blindness and allows the user the hypothesis to experience them, interacting with the
virtual space and its components. It has at its core, the attempt to understand more
immersively that color suffers variations, and that there are other perspectives that need
to be taken into account.
This project consists of seven surreal VR environments that expose reflections of the
author’s experiences, and that are combined in a creative process. In these environments,
the user is able to move and venture, experiencing, immersively, all environments and
elements, perceiving the chromatic differences that occur with color vision deficiency
Visual processing mechanisms within magno, konio and parvocellular systems : implications for basic and clinical sciences
We want to understand the biophysical aspects of parallel processing of visual
information in humans, in health and disease. We introduced a novel approach to quantitative biology based on the development of new biophysical methods by isolating visual parallel processing in terms of psychophysics. The main question is to understand how the biological sensors encode the information on achromatic/chromatic contrast at different levels of the
human visual system, and how that information is kept segregated in different pathways from the retina to the cortex. For this purpose, new methods were developed, in particular, contrast sensitivity multi-channel processing tasks, with application to basic science and clinical vision.
The biophysical quantification of deficits in conio/parvocellular processing was held by
manipulating the colour spaces in order to measure chromatic discrimination thresholds,
allowing independent functional measures of the cones (L, M and S). Parvocellular function
was further assessed by a custom perimetry technique of achromatic contrast sensitivity. The magnocellular function was isolated by custom perimetry based on frequency doubling (FD) stimuli and through a battery of visual motion perception tests (local and global motion tasks).
This project of interdisciplinary nature, combining concepts and tools of physics and biology, has helped to fill a gap still widespread in neurobiology of systems, in terms, of a quantitative approach of visual function in health and disease. The new methodologies established allowed
the development of functional processing models of biological information, and especially lead to the reconsideration of genotype-phenotype and structure-function relationships, which are of major importance in vision science. Individuals of a normal population of various age groups
were studied to establish normative databases for each method and were further validated in isolated models (such as clinical models of injury to retinal ganglion cells, as in glaucoma and ocular hypertension or in genetic models of neurodevelopment, the Williams Syndrome). Asymmetries of spatial vision processing have been documented in
electrophysiological and anatomical terms, but their impact on visual performance are still
poorly explored. We tried to study these asymmetries in a normal population through
psychophysical measurements of achromatic contrast sensitivity by isolating
magno/parvocellular pathways. We compared the functional visual performance between
different visual field quadrants and hemifields. This study showed for the first time the
presence of two types of functional asymmetry in magno/parvocellular pathways, the first one with a likely source on the retina, and the second reflecting also a cortical interhemispheric asymmetry. This suggests that both cortical and retinal visual maps are functionally heterogeneous. We also focused on the analysis of structural and objective functional asymmetries at the level of the retina, and examined its correlation with asymmetries in terms of visual performance. We concluded that structural/functional patterns of asymmetry arise at different levels of the retina, as suggested by the observed pattern of partial correlation. The present work also aimed to evaluate the visual function in subjects with PD, using
more accurate and sensitive psychophysical tests than previous methods. We studied
independently the magno/parvo/coniocellular pathways and found meaningful involvement of
all of these neuronal pathways in PD disease. We found that the parvocellular (M and L cones)
assessment seems to be at least as promising as the traditional approach of studying
coniocellular stream (S cones). A correlation between visual performance with age and
disease stage was found only for the magnocellular pathway.
The study of visual motion perception in PD involved the use of a range of hierarchical
stimuli designed to bias responses from low-level (magnocellular), intermediate-level and
higher-level (dorsal stream) visual pathways and study their interdependence. The novelty of this strategy lies in the analysis of various hierarchical levels of the visual system, showing for the first time, the dissociation between low- and high-level visual processing in PD. Impairment of motion perception in the cortex was found in PD, and interestingly, there was no correlation between low-level damage and motion integration impairment. Thus, suggesting that the visually impaired magnocellular stream does not predict impairment of the dorsal pathway,
implying that such disturbances can not be explained entirely by early deficits in the retina as well as in the early magnocellular pathway (retina to sub-cortical, striate and extra-striate regions).
This study allowed to probe independently low- and high-level visual function in health
and disease
Contour Enhancement Algorithm for Improving Visual Perception of Deutan and Protan Dichromats
A variety of recoloring methods has been proposed in the literature to remedy the problem of confusing redgreen colors faced by dichromat people (as well by other color-blinded people). The common strategy to mitigate
this problem is to remap colors to other colors. But, it is clear this does not guarantee neither the necessary
contrast to distinguish the elements of an image, nor the naturalness of colors learnt from past experience of
each individual. In other words, the individual’s perceptual learning may not hold under color remapping.
With this in mind, we introduce the first algorithm primarily focused on the enhancement of object contours
in still images, instead of recoloring the pixels of the regions bounded by such contours. This is particularly
adequate to increase contrast in images where we find adjacent regions that are color-indistinguishable from the
dichromacy’s point of view
