    Closed-loop prosthetic hand : understanding sensorimotor and multisensory integration under uncertainty.

    To make sense of our unpredictable world, humans use sensory information streaming through billions of peripheral neurons. Uncertainty and ambiguity plague each sensory stream, yet remarkably our perception of the world is seamless, robust and often optimal in the sense of minimising perceptual variability. Moreover, humans have a remarkable capacity for dexterous manipulation. Initiation of precise motor actions under uncertainty requires awareness of not only the statistics of our environment but also the reliability of our sensory and motor apparatus. What happens when our sensory and motor systems are disrupted? Upper-limb amputees tted with a state-of-the-art prostheses must learn to both control and make sense of their robotic replacement limb. Tactile feedback is not a standard feature of these open-loop limbs, fundamentally limiting the degree of rehabilitation. This thesis introduces a modular closed-loop upper-limb prosthesis, a modified Touch Bionics ilimb hand with a custom-built linear vibrotactile feedback array. To understand the utility of the feedback system in the presence of multisensory and sensorimotor influences, three fundamental open questions were addressed: (i) What are the mechanisms by which subjects compute sensory uncertainty? (ii) Do subjects integrate an artificial modality with visual feedback as a function of sensory uncertainty? (iii) What are the influences of open-loop and closed-loop uncertainty on prosthesis control? To optimally handle uncertainty in the environment people must acquire estimates of the mean and uncertainty of sensory cues over time. A novel visual tracking experiment was developed in order to explore the processes by which people acquire these statistical estimators. Subjects were required to simultaneously report their evolving estimate of the mean and uncertainty of visual stimuli over time. This revealed that subjects could accumulate noisy evidence over the course of a trial to form an optimal continuous estimate of the mean, hindered only by natural kinematic constraints. Although subjects had explicit access to a measure of their continuous objective uncertainty, acquired from sensory information available within a trial, this was limited by a conservative margin for error. In the Bayesian framework, sensory evidence (from multiple sensory cues) and prior beliefs (knowledge of the statistics of sensory cues) are combined to form a posterior estimate of the state of the world. Multiple studies have revealed that humans behave as optimal Bayesian observers when making binary decisions in forced-choice tasks. In this thesis these results were extended to a continuous spatial localisation task. Subjects could rapidly accumulate evidence presented via vibrotactile feedback (an artificial modality ), and integrate it with visual feedback. The weight attributed to each sensory modality was chosen so as to minimise the overall objective uncertainty. Since subjects were able to combine multiple sources of sensory information with respect to their sensory uncertainties, it was hypothesised that vibrotactile feedback would benefit prosthesis wearers in the presence of either sensory or motor uncertainty. The closed-loop prosthesis served as a novel manipulandum to examine the role of feed-forward and feed-back mechanisms for prosthesis control, known to be required for successful object manipulation in healthy humans. Subjects formed economical grasps in idealised (noise-free) conditions and this was maintained even when visual, tactile and both sources of feedback were removed. However, when uncertainty was introduced into the hand controller, performance degraded significantly in the absence of visual or tactile feedback. These results reveal the complementary nature of feed-forward and feed-back processes in simulated prosthesis wearers, and highlight the importance of tactile feedback for control of a prosthesis

    The concept underlying the Engineering Data Compendium was the product of a research and development program (Integrated Perceptual Information for Designers project) aimed at facilitating the application of basic research findings in human performance to the design and military crew systems. The principal objective was to develop a workable strategy for: (1) identifying and distilling information of potential value to system design from the existing research literature, and (2) presenting this technical information in a way that would aid its accessibility, interpretability, and applicability by systems designers. The present four volumes of the Engineering Data Compendium represent the first implementation of this strategy. This is the first volume, the User's Guide, containing a description of the program and instructions for its use

    Impact of supplementary sensory feedback on the control and embodiment in human movement augmentation

    In human movement augmentation, the number of controlled degrees of freedom could be enhanced by the simultaneous and independent use of supernumerary robotic limbs (SRL) and natural ones. However, this poses several challenges, that could be mitigated by encoding and relaying the SRL status. Here, we review the impact of supplementary sensory feedback on the control and embodiment of SRLs. We classify the main feedback features and analyse how they improve performance. We report the feasibility of pushing body representation beyond natural human morphology and suggest that gradual SRL embodiment could make multisensory incongruencies less disruptive. We also highlight shared computational bases between SRL motor control and embodiment and suggest contextualizing them within the same theoretical framework. Finally, we argue that a shift towards long term experimental paradigms is necessary for successfully integrating motor control and embodiment

    Vibrotactile Sensory Augmentation and Machine Learning Based Approaches for Balance Rehabilitation

    Vestibular disorders and aging can negatively impact balance performance. Currently, the most effective approach for improving balance is exercise-based balance rehabilitation. Despite its effectiveness, balance rehabilitation does not always result in a full recovery of balance function. In this dissertation, vibrotactile sensory augmentation (SA) and machine learning (ML) were studied as approaches for further improving balance rehabilitation outcomes. Vibrotactile SA provides a form of haptic cues to complement and/or replace sensory information from the somatosensory, visual and vestibular sensory systems. Previous studies have shown that people can reduce their body sway when vibrotactile SA is provided; however, limited controlled studies have investigated the retention of balance improvements after training with SA has ceased. The primary aim of this research was to examine the effects of supervised balance rehabilitation with vibrotactile SA. Two studies were conducted among people with unilateral vestibular disorders and healthy older adults to explore the use of vibrotactile SA for therapeutic and preventative purposes, respectively. The study among people with unilateral vestibular disorders provided six weeks of supervised in-clinic balance training. The findings indicated that training with vibrotactile SA led to additional body sway reduction for balance exercises with head movements, and the improvements were retained for up to six months. Training with vibrotactile SA did not lead to significant additional improvements in the majority of the clinical outcomes except for the Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale. The study among older adults provided semi-supervised in-home balance rehabilitation training using a novel smartphone balance trainer. After completing eight weeks of balance training, participants who trained with vibrotactile SA showed significantly greater improvements in standing-related clinical outcomes, but not in gait-related clinical outcomes, compared with those who trained without SA. In addition to investigating the effects of long-term balance training with SA, we sought to study the effects of vibrotactile display design on people’s reaction times to vibrational cues. Among the various factors tested, the vibration frequency and tactor type had relatively small effects on reaction times, while stimulus location and secondary cognitive task had relatively large effects. Factors affected young and older adults’ reaction times in a similar manner, but with different magnitudes. Lastly, we explored the potential for ML to inform balance exercise progression for future applications of unsupervised balance training. We mapped body motion data measured by wearable inertial measurement units to balance assessment ratings provided by physical therapists. By training a multi-class classifier using the leave-one-participant-out cross-validation method, we found approximately 82% agreement among trained classifier and physical therapist assessments. The findings of this dissertation suggest that vibrotactile SA can be used as a rehabilitation tool to further improve a subset of clinical outcomes resulting from supervised balance rehabilitation training. Specifically, individuals who train with a SA device may have additional confidence in performing balance activities and greater postural stability, which could decrease their fear of falling and fall risk, and subsequently increase their quality of life. This research provides preliminary support for the hypothesized mechanism that SA promotes the central nervous system to reweight sensory inputs. The preliminary outcomes of this research also provide novel insights for unsupervised balance training that leverage wearable technology and ML techniques.     Distributed Sensing and Stimulation Systems Towards Sense of Touch Restoration in Prosthetics

    Modern prostheses aim at restoring the functional and aesthetic characteristics of the lost limb. To foster prosthesis embodiment and functionality, it is necessary to restitute both volitional control and sensory feedback. Contemporary feedback interfaces presented in research use few sensors and stimulation units to feedback at most two discrete feedback variables (e.g. grasping force and aperture), whereas the human sense of touch relies on a distributed network of mechanoreceptors providing high-fidelity spatial information. To provide this type of feedback in prosthetics, it is necessary to sense tactile information from artificial skin placed on the prosthesis and transmit tactile feedback above the amputation in order to map the interaction between the prosthesis and the environment. This thesis proposes the integration of distributed sensing systems (e-skin) to acquire tactile sensation, and non-invasive multichannel electrotactile feedback and virtual reality to deliver high-bandwidth information to the user. Its core focus addresses the development and testing of close-loop sensory feedback human-machine interface, based on the latest distributed sensing and stimulation techniques for restoring the sense of touch in prosthetics. To this end, the thesis is comprised of two introductory chapters that describe the state of art in the field, the objectives and the used methodology and contributions; as well as three studies distributed over stimulation system level and sensing system level. The first study presents the development of close-loop compensatory tracking system to evaluate the usability and effectiveness of electrotactile sensory feedback in enabling real-time close-loop control in prosthetics. It examines and compares the subject\u2019s adaptive performance and tolerance to random latencies while performing the dynamic control task (i.e. position control) and simultaneously receiving either visual feedback or electrotactile feedback for communicating the momentary tracking error. Moreover, it reported the minimum time delay needed for an abrupt impairment of users\u2019 performance. The experimental results have shown that electrotactile feedback performance is less prone to changes with longer delays. However, visual feedback drops faster than electrotactile with increased time delays. This is a good indication for the effectiveness of electrotactile feedback in enabling close- loop control in prosthetics, since some delays are inevitable. The second study describes the development of a novel non-invasive compact multichannel interface for electrotactile feedback, containing 24 pads electrode matrix, with fully programmable stimulation unit, that investigates the ability of able-bodied human subjects to localize the electrotactile stimulus delivered through the electrode matrix. Furthermore, it designed a novel dual parameter -modulation (interleaved frequency and intensity) and compared it to conventional stimulation (same frequency for all pads). In addition and for the first time, it compared the electrotactile stimulation to mechanical stimulation. More, it exposes the integration of virtual prosthesis with the developed system in order to achieve better user experience and object manipulation through mapping the acquired real-time collected tactile data and feedback it simultaneously to the user. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed interleaved coding substantially improved the spatial localization compared to same-frequency stimulation. Furthermore, it showed that same-frequency stimulation was equivalent to mechanical stimulation, whereas the performance with dual-parameter modulation was significantly better. The third study presents the realization of a novel, flexible, screen- printed e-skin based on P(VDF-TrFE) piezoelectric polymers, that would cover the fingertips and the palm of the prosthetic hand (particularly the Michelangelo hand by Ottobock) and an assistive sensorized glove for stroke patients. Moreover, it developed a new validation methodology to examine the sensors behavior while being solicited. The characterization results showed compatibility between the expected (modeled) behavior of the electrical response of each sensor to measured mechanical (normal) force at the skin surface, which in turn proved the combination of both fabrication and assembly processes was successful. This paves the way to define a practical, simplified and reproducible characterization protocol for e-skin patches In conclusion, by adopting innovative methodologies in sensing and stimulation systems, this thesis advances the overall development of close-loop sensory feedback human-machine interface used for restoration of sense of touch in prosthetics. Moreover, this research could lead to high-bandwidth high-fidelity transmission of tactile information for modern dexterous prostheses that could ameliorate the end user experience and facilitate it acceptance in the daily life

    Supporting Multitasking: Evaluation of Novel Input and Output Characteristics to Support Primary and Secondary Task Performance Using Situation Awareness and Mental Workload

    Driving and flying are examples of tasks in dynamic process control environments where performing secondary tasks poses risks to the user, potentially resulting in detrimental effects on situation awareness (SA) and mental workload (MWL). The predominant theories of multitasking emphasize the potential of using alternate information processing channels to better support multitasking, and hence prompt the exploration of novel interface characteristics that may reduce cognitive and structural interference. This dissertation uses measures of SA and MWL to evaluate the potential of input and output display characteristics found in novel technologies, such as Google Glass, Pebble Smartwatch, and Windows Surface, to support multitasking performance. Three experiments were performed to evaluate the following input and output characteristics: voice input (Experiments 1 and 3), head-up display (Experiment 1), size of display (Experiments 2 and 3), use of discrete tactile signals (Experiment 2), and use of continuously informing tactile signals (Experiment 3). Experiments 1 and 2 altered only interface characteristics associated with secondary task performance, while Experiment 1 also altered interface characteristics associated with primary task performance in the attempt to more effectively redistribute MWL. While Experiments 1 (Texting and Driving with Google Glass) and 2 (Weather Technology Characteristics in General Aviation Cockpits) indicate the potential SA and MWL benefits of using voice input and larger displays for secondary tasks in multitasking settings, Experiment 3 (Supporting Emergency Vehicle Mobile Command Terminal Use While Driving) sheds light on the limitations of these benefits with increasing task complexity. Experiment 1 showed that combining a head-up display with voice input provided additional marginal SA and MWL benefits. Experiment 2 also suggested SA and MWL benefits when using discrete tactile signals to aid in indicating the need for secondary task attentional shifts. Experiment 3 furthered this exploration of tactile signaling by presenting continuously informing vibrations relating to the primary task, exhibiting both the potential benefits of providing continuous information and the potential drawbacks of overreliance on such displays. These findings have the potential to fundamentally change the way users interact with technology by informing the development of and policies surrounding new products using these features

    Human-Computer interaction methodologies applied in the evaluation of haptic digital musical instruments

    Recent developments in interactive technologies have seen major changes in the manner in which artists, performers, and creative individuals interact with digital music technology; this is due to the increasing variety of interactive technologies that are readily available today. Digital Musical Instruments (DMIs) present musicians with performance challenges that are unique to this form of computer music. One of the most significant deviations from conventional acoustic musical instruments is the level of physical feedback conveyed by the instrument to the user. Currently, new interfaces for musical expression are not designed to be as physically communicative as acoustic instruments. Specifically, DMIs are often void of haptic feedback and therefore lack the ability to impart important performance information to the user. Moreover, there currently is no standardised way to measure the effect of this lack of physical feedback. Best practice would expect that there should be a set of methods to effectively, repeatedly, and quantifiably evaluate the functionality, usability, and user experience of DMIs. Earlier theoretical and technological applications of haptics have tried to address device performance issues associated with the lack of feedback in DMI designs and it has been argued that the level of haptic feedback presented to a user can significantly affect the user’s overall emotive feeling towards a musical device.     Postural Sway and Sway-adaptation During Exposure to Optic Flow: the Effect of Stimulus Periodicity and Concurrent Cognitive Tasks

    Stable upright stance is achieved through an active postural control process that requires the accurate integration of sensory feedback signals from the visual, graviceptive and proprioceptive systems. Previous studies have shown that this integration process may involve "reweighting", whereby the relative contributions of the various sensory signals are dynamically altered in order to minimize reliance on unreliable signals. In addition, evidence suggests that feedback control by itself cannot explain experimental observations of postural behavior. In light of these observations, the current study proposed that a predictive mechanism exists within the postural control system that can identify the highly repetitive pattern within a predictable sensory input, and can use this information to facilitate the sensory reweighting process. The objectives of the current work were to: (1) uncover experimental evidence of such a predictive mechanism, through examination of postural sway responses in healthy young adults exposed to various types of predictable and unpredictable moving visual scenes; (2) examine how this predictive mechanism manifested itself in individuals who were particularly reliant on visual sensory information; and (3) determine if this predictive mechanism was influenced by cognitive tasks, which are thought to interact with the sensory reweighting process.Data revealed that in healthy young adults predictable stimuli elicited improved sway performance compared to unpredictable stimuli, as indicated by significant decreases in both overall sway magnitude, and the time required for sensory reweighting to occur. This effect was enhanced during the performance of a concurrent cognitive task, but was not observed in visually dependent individuals, apparently due to an inability to perform sensory reweighting. Taken together, these observations support the existence of a predictive component to postural control that can alter the dynamic reweighting of sensory inputs during exposure to predictable stimuli. These findings may have implications for the design of experiments involving moving visual scenes, as well as for the treatment of individuals suffering from certain balance disorders
