Comparing objective visual quality impairment detection in 2D and 3D video sequences
The skill level of teleoperator plays a key role in the telerobotic operation. However, plenty of experiments are required to evaluate the skill level in a conventional assessment. In this paper, a novel brain-based method of skill assessment is introduced, and the relationship between the teleoperator's brain states and skill level is first investigated based on a kernel canonical correlation analysis (KCCA) method. The skill of teleoperator (SoT) is defined by a statistic method using the cumulative probability function (CDF). Five indicators are extracted from the electroencephalo-graph (EEG) of the teleoperator to represent the brain states during the telerobotic operation. By using the KCCA algorithm in modeling the relationship between the SoT and the brain states, the correlation has been proved. During the telerobotic operation, the skill level of teleoperator can be well predicted through the brain states. © 2013 IEEE.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex
VANGUARD: A Blockchain-Based Solution to Digital Piracy
Online pirates and Intellectual Property (IP) holders have been in perpetual war over various products like music, movies, software, etc. since the popularity of the Internet. It is estimated that the US entertainment industry loses approximately 29 billion USD every year for pirates. Online piracy has since gone from bad to worse as growing internet users and better broadband connections enable people to share large files freely over the internet. The objective of this research is to investigate the causes and enablers for online piracy in movie industry and to come up with an anti-pirating solution. The primary outcome of the study will consist of a dedicated blockchain based anti-piracy system, 2018;Vanguard2019;. This system will provide all-round piracy protection from a built-in streaming service to a component to actively look through the internet for pirated movies and torrents. This system will greatly deter the piracy of movies since the IP holders can ensure their IP rights through this system and quickly act against illegitimate distribution of their media
Saving Energy in Mobile Devices for On-Demand Multimedia Streaming -- A Cross-Layer Approach
This paper proposes a novel energy-efficient multimedia delivery system
called EStreamer. First, we study the relationship between buffer size at the
client, burst-shaped TCP-based multimedia traffic, and energy consumption of
wireless network interfaces in smartphones. Based on the study, we design and
implement EStreamer for constant bit rate and rate-adaptive streaming.
EStreamer can improve battery lifetime by 3x, 1.5x and 2x while streaming over

Gradient-based 2D-to-3D Conversion for Soccer Videos
A wide spread adoption of 3D videos and technologies is hindered by the lack of high-quality 3D content. One promising solution to address this problem is to use automated 2D-to-3D conversion. However, current conversion methods, while general, produce low-quality results with artifacts that are not acceptable to many viewers. We address this problem by showing how to construct a high-quality, domain-specific conversion method for soccer videos. We propose a novel, data-driven method that generates stereoscopic frames by transferring depth information from similar frames in a database of 3D stereoscopic videos. Creating a database of 3D stereoscopic videos with accurate depth is, however, very difficult. One of the key findings in this paper is showing that computer generated content in current sports computer games can be used to generate high-quality 3D video reference database for 2D-to-3D conversion methods. Once we retrieve similar 3D video frames, our technique transfers depth gradients to the target frame while respecting object boundaries. It then computes depth maps from the gradients, and generates the output stereoscopic video. We implement our method and validate it by conducting user-studies that evaluate depth perception and visual comfort of the converted 3D videos. We show that our method produces high-quality 3D videos that are almost indistinguishable from videos shot by stereo cameras. In addition, our method significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-art method. Tracing the German Centennial Flood in the Stream of Tweets: First Lessons Learned
Social microblogging services such as Twitter result in massive streams of georeferenced messages and geolocated status updates. This real-time source of information is invaluable for many application areas, in particular for disaster detection and response scenarios. Consequently, a considerable number of works has dealt with issues of their acquisition, analysis and visualization. Most of these works not only assume an appropriate percentage of georeferenced messages that allows for detecting relevant events for a specific region and time frame, but also that these geolocations are reasonably correct in representing places and times of the underlying spatio-temporal situation. In this paper, we review these two key assumption based on the results of applying a visual analytics approach to a dataset of georeferenced Tweets from Germany over eight months witnessing several large-scale flooding situations throughout the country. Our results con rm the potential of Twitter as a distributed 'social sensor' but at the same time highlight some caveats in interpreting immediate results. To overcome these limits we explore incorporating evidence from other data sources including further social media and mobile phone network metrics to detect, confirm and refine events with respect to location and time. We summarize the lessons learned from our initial analysis by proposing recommendations and outline possible future work directions
