A simplified procedure for correcting both errors and erasures of a Reed-Solomon code using the Euclidean algorithm

    Get PDF
It is well known that the Euclidean algorithm or its equivalent, continued fractions, can be used to find the error locator polynomial and the error evaluator polynomial in Berlekamp's key equation needed to decode a Reed-Solomon (RS) code. A simplified procedure is developed and proved to correct erasures as well as errors by replacing the initial condition of the Euclidean algorithm by the erasure locator polynomial and the Forney syndrome polynomial. By this means, the errata locator polynomial and the errata evaluator polynomial can be obtained, simultaneously and simply, by the Euclidean algorithm only. With this improved technique the complexity of time domain RS decoders for correcting both errors and erasures is reduced substantially from previous approaches. As a consequence, decoders for correcting both errors and erasures of RS codes can be made more modular, regular, simple, and naturally suitable for both VLSI and software implementation. An example illustrating this modified decoding procedure is given for a (15, 9) RS code

Techniques and potential capabilities of multi-resolutional information (knowledge) processing

    Get PDF
A concept of nested hierarchical (multi-resolutional, pyramidal) information (knowledge) processing is introduced for a variety of systems including data and/or knowledge bases, vision, control, and manufacturing systems, industrial automated robots, and (self-programmed) autonomous intelligent machines. A set of practical recommendations is presented using a case study of a multiresolutional object representation. It is demonstrated here that any intelligent module transforms (sometimes, irreversibly) the knowledge it deals with, and this tranformation affects the subsequent computation processes, e.g., those of decision and control. Several types of knowledge transformation are reviewed. Definite conditions are analyzed, satisfaction of which is required for organization and processing of redundant information (knowledge) in the multi-resolutional systems. Providing a definite degree of redundancy is one of these conditions

A Microprocessor based hybrid system for digital error correction

    Get PDF
The design of a microprocessor based hybrid system for digital error correction is presented. It is shown that such a system allows for implementation of several cyclic codes at a variety of throughput rates providing variable degrees of error correction depending on current user requirements. The theoretical basis for encoding and decoding of binary BCH codes is reviewed. Design and implementation of system hardware and software are described. A method for injection of independent bit errors with controllable statistics into the system is developed, and its accuracy verified by computer simulation. This method of controllable error injection is used to test performance of the designed system. In analysis, these results demonstrate the flexibility of operation provided by the hybrid nature of the system. Finally, potential applications and modifications are presented to reinforce the wide applicability of the system described in this thesis

Simulation of Error Correction Algorithms Using Reed Solomon Codes

    Get PDF
The Reed-Solomon codes for multiple-error-correction are examined in this study. The results of a comparison between the conventional Gorenstein-Zierler method and a transform method are discussed, and simple examples are given. Then decoding algorithms are compared in terms of the numerical complexity. Finally the conclusions of the simulation are stated.Computer Scienc

Satellite communication performance evaluation: Computational techniques based on moments

    Get PDF
Computational techniques that efficiently compute bit error probabilities when only moments of the various interference random variables are available are presented. The approach taken is a generalization of the well known Gauss-Quadrature rules used for numerically evaluating single or multiple integrals. In what follows, basic algorithms are developed. Some of its properties and generalizations are shown and its many potential applications are described. Some typical interference scenarios for which the results are particularly applicable include: intentional jamming, adjacent and cochannel interferences; radar pulses (RFI); multipath; and intersymbol interference. While the examples presented stress evaluation of bit error probilities in uncoded digital communication systems, the moment techniques can also be applied to the evaluation of other parameters, such as computational cutoff rate under both normal and mismatched receiver cases in coded systems. Another important application is the determination of the probability distributions of the output of a discrete time dynamical system. This type of model occurs widely in control systems, queueing systems, and synchronization systems (e.g., discrete phase locked loops)
