Ditransitives in germanic languages. Synchronic and diachronic aspects
This volume brings together twelve empirical studies on ditransitive constructions in Germanic languages and their varieties, past and present. Specifically, the volume includes contributions on a wide variety of Germanic languages, including English, Dutch, and German, but also Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian, as well as lesser-studied ones such as Faroese. While the first part of the volume focuses on diachronic aspects, the second part showcases a variety of synchronic aspects relating to ditransitive patterns. Methodologically, the volume covers both experimental and corpus-based studies. Questions addressed by the papers in the volume are, among others, issues like the cross-linguistic pervasiveness and cognitive reality of factors involved in the choice between different ditransitive constructions, or differences and similarities in the diachronic development of ditransitives. The volume’s broad scope and comparative perspective offers comprehensive insights into well-known phenomena and furthers our understanding of variation across languages of the same family

The Near-Synonymous Classifiers in Mandarin Chinese: Etymology, Modern Usage, And Possible Problems in L2 Classroom
Many Chinese classifiers are nearly synonymic – they can be used with the same head nouns without changing the meaning of the sentence, in other words, such classifiers can be used interchangeably or almost interchangeably. This poses a challenge for Chinese language learners, especially those who lack such a grammatical category in their own native language. Another complication arises from the ambiguous English translations of many classifiers.
In this paper we investigate the collocation behavior of near-synonymous Chinese classifiers, focusing on their semantic nuances and interchangeability. Analyzing 6 pairs of classifiers — 栋 and 幢, 匹 and 头, 批 and 派, 颗 and 粒, 辆 and 台, and 根 and 支— drawn from the HSK exam glossary, the dataset for this study encompasses 1200 samples (100 per each variable) and 416 distinct head nouns.
Through a corpus-based approach we analyze collocation behavior of each classifier on its own and as a part of the pair. The results showcase that not all pairs exhibit complete interchangeability. The collocation behavior of 批 and 派 differ significantly, where 批 primarily quantifies batches with a \u27first\u27 connotation, while 派 is used more in artistic expressions. The interchangeability of 栋 and 幢 varies with context. 幢 emerges as the least fre¬¬quent morpheme in the corpus, emphasizing its specific contextual usage. While both are used in address lines, 栋 predominantly quantifies standalone buildings, whereas 幢 is more aligned with larger architectural complexes. The analysis of 匹 and 头 highlights their distinctiveness, with 匹 counting horses and wolves and 头 being more versatile with various animals. 颗 and 粒 appear partially interchangeable, particularly with 珠-related head nouns and items associated with plants, fruits, and trees. The research also underscores that 辆 is primarily linked to car-related nouns, while 台 is used more versatile as a classifier for machines and electronic devices, including computers, printers, phones, cameras. 根 and 支 only overlap in the head noun 笔, and their roles diverge, with 根 being a versatile classifier and 支 also appearing as part of medical terms
Large Language Models and the Patterns of Human Language Use: An Alternative View of the Relation of AI to Understanding and Sentience
Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT are deep learning architectures that have been trained on immense amounts of text. Their ability to produce human-like text has led to claims that LLMs either possess or simulate some form of conscious experience and understanding. This paper argues that experience and understanding do play an important role, but that it is very different from what is commonly thought. LLMs model the statistical contours of vast amounts of human language use. We use phenomenological considerations of human language production to explain that human language use is intertwined with experience and understanding. Symbolic language does not simply correspond to internal or external 'meaning', but is meaningful because it scaffolds our interactions and mental life. In human language production, preconscious anticipatory processes interact with conscious experience. Human language use constitutes and makes use of given patterns, constantly rearranging them in a way that we liken to making a collage. LLMs do not need to replicate or simulate human mental life in order to produce text that appears meaningful to humans. Rather, they can infer statistical patterns from meaningful patterns in written language use, including clichés and biases. The impressive extent to which these can be computationally reassembled into text that makes sense to humans does not show that LLMs have developed understanding or sentience. Rather, it can reveal the surprising extent to which human language use gives rise to and is guided by patterns
Vagueness Markers in Italian
Moving from a broad socio-pragmatic perspective, this study analyses how speakers of different ages use a class of items and constructions that codify intentional vagueness in Italian.
Items as un po’ ‘a bit’, tipo ‘kind’, diciamo ‘let us say’, così ‘so’, e cose del genere ‘and things like that’, or cosa ‘thing’ constitute a class of linguistically heterogeneous means that often function in conversation as vagueness markers, i.e. elements by which speakers signal that their knowledge or communication are somehow only tentative, approximate and vague. Their use does not depend on language systemic factors, but is the result of a, more or less conscious, choice of speakers to enhance conversation for different reasons, which include facilitating the flow of conversation, signifying a vague categorization, and, eventually, being polite.
Operating at the pragmatic level, vagueness markers represent elements that are readily available to speakers’ choices and contribute to characterize individual and generational discourse styles. Through a corpus-based analysis of listeners’ phone-ins to a Milan radio station, this study investigates how vagueness markers are used by speakers of different ages in 1976 and in 2010, and how Italian discourse styles have evolved in the last forty years
Advances in automatic terminology processing: methodology and applications in focus
A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Wolverhampton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.The information and knowledge era, in which we are living, creates challenges in many fields, and terminology is not an exception. The challenges include an exponential growth in the number of specialised documents that are available, in which terms are presented, and the number of newly introduced concepts and terms, which are already beyond our (manual) capacity. A promising solution to this ‘information overload’ would be to employ automatic or semi-automatic procedures to enable individuals and/or small groups to efficiently build high quality terminologies from their own resources which closely reflect their individual objectives and viewpoints. Automatic terminology processing (ATP) techniques have already proved to be quite reliable, and can save human time in terminology processing. However, they are not without weaknesses, one of which is that these techniques often consider terms to be independent lexical units satisfying some criteria, when terms are, in fact, integral parts of a coherent system (a terminology). This observation is supported by the discussion of the notion of terms and terminology and the review of existing approaches in ATP presented in this thesis. In order to overcome the aforementioned weakness, we propose a novel methodology in ATP which is able to extract a terminology as a whole. The proposed methodology is based on knowledge patterns automatically extracted from glossaries, which we considered to be valuable, but overlooked resources. These automatically identified knowledge patterns are used to extract terms, their relations and descriptions from corpora. The extracted information can facilitate the construction of a terminology as a coherent system. The study also aims to discuss applications of ATP, and describes an experiment in which ATP is integrated into a new NLP application: multiplechoice test item generation. The successful integration of the system shows that ATP is a viable technology, and should be exploited more by other NLP applications

Fungal diversity notes 1512-1610: taxonomic and phylogenetic contributions on genera and species of fungal taxa
This article is the 14th in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein we report 98 taxa distributed in two phyla, seven classes, 26 orders and 50 families which are described and illustrated. Taxa in this study were collected from Australia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, China, Cyprus, Egypt, France, French Guiana, India, Indonesia, Italy, Laos, Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. There are 59 new taxa, 39 new hosts and new geographical distributions with one new combination. An updated, accurate and timely report of fungus-host and fungus-geography is important. We also provide an updated list of fungal taxa published in the previous fungal diversity notes. In this list, erroneous taxa and synonyms are marked and corrected accordingly
