    Measuring Semantic Textual Similarity and Automatic Answer Assessment in Dialogue Based Tutoring Systems

    This dissertation presents methods and resources proposed to improve onmeasuring semantic textual similarity and their applications in student responseunderstanding in dialogue based Intelligent Tutoring Systems. In order to predict the extent of similarity between given pair of sentences,we have proposed machine learning models using dozens of features, such as thescores calculated using optimal multi-level alignment, vector based compositionalsemantics, and machine translation evaluation methods. Furthermore, we haveproposed models towards adding an interpretation layer on top of similaritymeasurement systems. Our models on predicting and interpreting the semanticsimilarity have been the top performing systems in SemEval (a premier venue for thesemantic evaluation) for the last three years. The correlations between our models\u27predictions and the human judgments were above 0.80 for several datasets while ourmodels being very robust than many other top performing systems. Moreover, wehave proposed Bayesian. We have also proposed a novel Neural Network based word representationmapping approach which allows us to map the vector based representation of a wordfound in one model to the another model where the word representation is missing,effectively pooling together the vocabularies and corresponding representationsacross models. Our experiments show that the model coverage increased by few toseveral times depending on which model\u27s vocabulary is taken as a reference. Also,the transformed representations were well correlated to the native target modelvectors showing that the mapped representations can be used with condence tosubstitute the missing word representations in the target model. models to adapt similarity models across domains. Furthermore, we have proposed methods to improve open-ended answersassessment in dialogue based tutoring systems which is very challenging because ofthe variations in student answers which often are not self contained and need thecontextual information (e.g., dialogue history) in order to better assess theircorrectness. In that, we have proposed Probabilistic Soft Logic (PSL) modelsaugmenting semantic similarity information with other knowledge. To detect intra- and inter-sentential negation scope and focus in tutorialdialogs, we have developed Conditional Random Fields (CRF) models. The resultsindicate that our approach is very effective in detecting negation scope and focus intutorial dialogue context and can be further developed to augment the naturallanguage understanding systems. Additionally, we created resources (datasets, models, and tools) for fosteringresearch in semantic similarity and student response understanding inconversational tutoring systems

    A proposal to manage multi-task dialogs in conversational interfaces

    The emergence of smart devices and recent advances in spoken language technology are currently extending the use of conversational interfaces and spoken interaction to perform many tasks. The dialog management task of a conversational interface consists of selecting the next system response considering the user's actions, the dialog history, and the results of accessing the data repositories. In this paper we describe a dialog management technique adapted to multi-task conversational systems. In our proposal, specialized dialog models are used to deal with each specific subtask of dialog objective for which the dialog system has been designed. The practical application of the proposed technique to develop a dialog system acting as a customer support service shows that the use of these specialized dialog models increases the quality and number of successful interactions with the system in comparison with developing a single dialog model

    A data-driven approach to spoken dialog segmentation

    In This Paper, We Present A Statistical Model For Spoken Dialog Segmentation That Decides The Current Phase Of The Dialog By Means Of An Automatic Classification Process. We Have Applied Our Proposal To Three Practical Conversational Systems Acting In Different Domains. The Results Of The Evaluation Show That Is Possible To Attain High Accuracy Rates In Dialog Segmentation When Using Different Sources Of Information To Represent The User Input. Our Results Indicate How The Module Proposed Can Also Improve Dialog Management By Selecting Better System Answers. The Statistical Model Developed With Human-Machine Dialog Corpora Has Been Applied In One Of Our Experiments To Human-Human Conversations And Provides A Good Baseline As Well As Insights In The Model Limitation

    Knowledge Reasoning with Graph Neural Networks

    Knowledge reasoning is the process of drawing conclusions from existing facts and rules, which requires a range of capabilities including but not limited to understanding concepts, applying logic, and calibrating or validating architecture based on existing knowledge. With the explosive growth of communication techniques and mobile devices, much of collective human knowledge resides on the Internet today, in unstructured and semi-structured forms such as text, tables, images, videos, etc. It is overwhelmingly difficult for human to navigate the gigantic Internet knowledge without the help of intelligent systems such as search engines and question answering systems. To serve various information needs, in this thesis, we develop methods to perform knowledge reasoning over both structured and unstructured data. This thesis attempts to answer the following research questions on the topic of knowledge reasoning: (1) How to perform multi-hop reasoning over knowledge graphs? How should we leverage graph neural networks to learn graph-aware representations efficiently? And, how to systematically handle the noise in human questions? (2) How to combine deep learning and symbolic reasoning in a consistent probabilistic framework? How to make the inference efficient and scalable for large-scale knowledge graphs? Can we strike a balance between the representation power and the simplicity of the model? (3) What is the reasoning pattern of graph neural networks for knowledge-aware QA tasks? Can those elaborately designed GNN modules really perform complex reasoning process? Are they under- or over-complicated? Can we design a much simpler yet effective model to achieve comparable performance? (4) How to build an open-domain question answering system that can reason over multiple retrieved documents? How to efficiently rank and filter the retrieved documents to reduce the noise for the downstream answer prediction module? How to propagate and assemble the information among multiple retrieved documents? (5) How to answer the questions that require numerical reasoning over textual passages? How to enable pre-trained language models to perform numerical reasoning? We explored the research questions above and discovered that graph neural networks can be leveraged as a powerful tool for various knowledge reasoning tasks over both structured and unstructured knowledge sources. On structured graph-based knowledge source, we build graph neural networks on top of the graph structure to capture the topology information for downstream reasoning tasks. On unstructured text-based knowledge source, we first identify graph-structured information such as entity co-occurrence and entity-number binding, and then employ graph neural networks to reason over the constructed graphs, working together with pre-trained language models to handle unstructured part of the knowledge source.Ph.D

    Sentiment analysis is a growing field at the intersection of linguistics and computer science, which attempts to automatically determine the sentiment, or positive/negative opinion, contained in text. Sentiment can be characterized as positive or negative evaluation expressed through language. Common applications of sentiment analysis include the automatic determination of whether a review posted online (of a movie, a book, or a consumer product) is positive or negative towards the item being reviewed. Sentiment analysis is now a common tool in the repertoire of social media analysis carried out by companies, marketers and political analysts. Research on sentiment analysis extracts information from positive and negative words in text, from the context of those words, and the linguistic structure of the text.     Context Aware Textual Entailment

    In conversations, stories, news reporting, and other forms of natural language, understanding requires participants to make assumptions (hypothesis) based on background knowledge, a process called entailment. These assumptions may then be supported, contradicted, or refined as a conversation or story progresses and additional facts become known and context changes. It is often the case that we do not know an aspect of the story with certainty but rather believe it to be the case; i.e., what we know is associated with uncertainty or ambiguity. In this research a method has been developed to identify different contexts of the input raw text along with specific features of the contexts such as time, location, and objects. The method includes a two-phase SVM classifier along with a voting mechanism in the second phase to identify the contexts. Rule-based algorithms were utilized to extract the context elements. This research also develops a new contextË—aware text representation. This representation maintains semantic aspects of sentences, as well as textual contexts and context elements. The method can offer both graph representation and First-Order-Logic representation of the text. This research also extracts a First-Order Logic (FOL) and XML representation of a text or series of texts. The method includes entailment using background knowledge from sources (VerbOcean and WordNet), with resolution of conflicts between extracted clauses, and handling the role of context in resolving uncertain truth

    Deeper Understanding of Tutorial Dialogues and Student Assessment

    Bloom (1984) reported two standard deviation improvement with human tutoring which inspired many researchers to develop Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) that are as effective as human tutoring. However, recent studies suggest that the 2-sigma result was misleading and that current ITSs are as good as human tutors. Nevertheless, we can think of 2 standard deviations as the benchmark for tutoring effectiveness of ideal expert tutors. In the case of ITSs, there is still the possibility that ITSs could be better than humans.One way to improve the ITSs would be identifying, understanding, and then successfully implementing effective tutorial strategies that lead to learning gains. Another step towards improving the effectiveness of ITSs is an accurate assessment of student responses. However, evaluating student answers in tutorial dialogues is challenging. The student answers often refer to the entities in the previous dialogue turns and problem description. Therefore, the student answers should be evaluated by taking dialogue context into account. Moreover, the system should explain which parts of the student answer are correct and which are incorrect. Such explanation capability allows the ITSs to provide targeted feedback to help students reflect upon and correct their knowledge deficits. Furthermore, targeted feedback increases learners\u27 engagement, enabling them to persist in solving the instructional task at hand on their own. In this dissertation, we describe our approach to discover and understand effective tutorial strategies employed by effective human tutors while interacting with learners. We also present various approaches to automatically assess students\u27 contributions using general methods that we developed for semantic analysis of short texts. We explain our work using generic semantic similarity approaches to evaluate the semantic similarity between individual learner contributions and ideal answers provided by experts for target instructional tasks. We also describe our method to assess student performance based on tutorial dialogue context, accounting for linguistic phenomena such as ellipsis and pronouns. We then propose an approach to provide an explanatory capability for assessing student responses. Finally, we recommend a novel method based on concept maps for jointly evaluating and interpreting the correctness of student responses

    L'objectif principal de cette thèse est d'améliorer l'inférence automatique pour la modélisation et la compréhension des communications humaines. En particulier, le but est de faciliter considérablement l'analyse du discours afin d'implémenter, au niveau industriel, des outils d'aide à l'exploration des conversations. Il s'agit notamment de la production de résumés automatiques, de recommandations, de la détection des actes de dialogue, de l'identification des décisions, de la planification et des relations sémantiques entre les actes de dialogue afin de comprendre les dialogues. Dans les conversations à plusieurs locuteurs, il est important de comprendre non seulement le sens de l'énoncé d'un locuteur et à qui il s'adresse, mais aussi les relations sémantiques qui le lient aux autres énoncés de la conversation et qui donnent lieu à différents fils de discussion. Une réponse doit être reconnue comme une réponse à une question particulière ; un argument, comme un argument pour ou contre une proposition en cours de discussion ; un désaccord, comme l'expression d'un point de vue contrasté par rapport à une autre idée déjà exprimée. Malheureusement, les données de discours annotées à la main et de qualités sont coûteuses et prennent du temps, et nous sommes loin d'en avoir assez pour entraîner des modèles d'apprentissage automatique traditionnels, et encore moins des modèles d'apprentissage profond. Il est donc nécessaire de trouver un moyen plus efficace d'annoter en structures discursives de grands corpus de conversations multi-locuteurs, tels que les transcriptions de réunions ou les chats. Un autre problème est qu'aucune quantité de données ne sera suffisante pour permettre aux modèles d'apprentissage automatique d'apprendre les caractéristiques sémantiques des relations discursives sans l'aide d'un expert ; les données sont tout simplement trop rares. Les relations de longue distance, dans lesquelles un énoncé est sémantiquement connecté non pas à l'énoncé qui le précède immédiatement, mais à un autre énoncé plus antérieur/tôt dans la conversation, sont particulièrement difficiles et rares, bien que souvent centrales pour la compréhension. Notre objectif dans cette thèse a donc été non seulement de concevoir un modèle qui prédit la structure du discours pour une conversation multipartite sans nécessiter de grandes quantités de données annotées manuellement, mais aussi de développer une approche qui soit transparente et explicable afin qu'elle puisse être modifiée et améliorée par des experts.The main objective of this thesis is to improve the automatic capture of semantic information with the goal of modeling and understanding human communication. We have advanced the state of the art in discourse parsing, in particular in the retrieval of discourse structure from chat, in order to implement, at the industrial level, tools to help explore conversations. These include the production of automatic summaries, recommendations, dialogue acts detection, identification of decisions, planning and semantic relations between dialogue acts in order to understand dialogues. In multi-party conversations it is important to not only understand the meaning of a participant's utterance and to whom it is addressed, but also the semantic relations that tie it to other utterances in the conversation and give rise to different conversation threads. An answer must be recognized as an answer to a particular question; an argument, as an argument for or against a proposal under discussion; a disagreement, as the expression of a point of view contrasted with another idea already expressed. Unfortunately, capturing such information using traditional supervised machine learning methods from quality hand-annotated discourse data is costly and time-consuming, and we do not have nearly enough data to train these machine learning models, much less deep learning models. Another problem is that arguably, no amount of data will be sufficient for machine learning models to learn the semantic characteristics of discourse relations without some expert guidance; the data are simply too sparse. Long distance relations, in which an utterance is semantically connected not to the immediately preceding utterance, but to another utterance from further back in the conversation, are particularly difficult and rare, though often central to comprehension. It is therefore necessary to find a more efficient way to retrieve discourse structures from large corpora of multi-party conversations, such as meeting transcripts or chats. This is one goal this thesis achieves. In addition, we not only wanted to design a model that predicts discourse structure for multi-party conversation without requiring large amounts of hand-annotated data, but also to develop an approach that is transparent and explainable so that it can be modified and improved by experts.
