A Context-aware Attention Network for Interactive Question Answering
Neural network based sequence-to-sequence models in an encoder-decoder
framework have been successfully applied to solve Question Answering (QA)
problems, predicting answers from statements and questions. However, almost all
previous models have failed to consider detailed context information and
unknown states under which systems do not have enough information to answer
given questions. These scenarios with incomplete or ambiguous information are
very common in the setting of Interactive Question Answering (IQA). To address
this challenge, we develop a novel model, employing context-dependent
word-level attention for more accurate statement representations and
question-guided sentence-level attention for better context modeling. We also
generate unique IQA datasets to test our model, which will be made publicly
available. Employing these attention mechanisms, our model accurately
understands when it can output an answer or when it requires generating a
supplementary question for additional input depending on different contexts.
When available, user's feedback is encoded and directly applied to update
sentence-level attention to infer an answer. Extensive experiments on QA and
IQA datasets quantitatively demonstrate the effectiveness of our model with
significant improvement over state-of-the-art conventional QA models.Comment: 9 page
Finding Answers from the Word of God: Domain Adaptation for Neural Networks in Biblical Question Answering
Question answering (QA) has significantly benefitted from deep learning
techniques in recent years. However, domain-specific QA remains a challenge due
to the significant amount of data required to train a neural network. This
paper studies the answer sentence selection task in the Bible domain and answer
questions by selecting relevant verses from the Bible. For this purpose, we
create a new dataset BibleQA based on bible trivia questions and propose three
neural network models for our task. We pre-train our models on a large-scale QA
dataset, SQuAD, and investigate the effect of transferring weights on model
accuracy. Furthermore, we also measure the model accuracies with different
answer context lengths and different Bible translations. We affirm that
transfer learning has a noticeable improvement in the model accuracy. We
achieve relatively good results with shorter context lengths, whereas longer
context lengths decreased model accuracy. We also find that using a more modern
Bible translation in the dataset has a positive effect on the task.Comment: The paper has been accepted at IJCNN 201
AnswerTree β a hyperplace-based game for collaborative mobile learning
In this paper we present AnswerTree, a collaborative mobile location-based educational game designed to teach 8-12 year olds about trees and wildlife within the University of Nottingham campus. The activity is designed around collecting virtual cards (similar in nature to the popular Top TrumpsTM games) containing graphics and information about notable trees. Each player begins by collecting one card from a game location, but then he or she can only collect further cards by answering questions β whose solutions are obtainable through sharing knowledge with other cardholders. This ostensibly allows each player to become a subject expert at the start of the game, encouraging collaborative interaction for the game to be successfully completed. In this initial paper we will outline the structure and background of this location based game. AnswerTree has been authored within the Hyperplace framework, and is a first implementation of a wider process to develop a flexible, multi-purpose platform for both individual and group location-based mobile learning
Can a Suit of Armor Conduct Electricity? A New Dataset for Open Book Question Answering
We present a new kind of question answering dataset, OpenBookQA, modeled
after open book exams for assessing human understanding of a subject. The open
book that comes with our questions is a set of 1329 elementary level science
facts. Roughly 6000 questions probe an understanding of these facts and their
application to novel situations. This requires combining an open book fact
(e.g., metals conduct electricity) with broad common knowledge (e.g., a suit of
armor is made of metal) obtained from other sources. While existing QA datasets
over documents or knowledge bases, being generally self-contained, focus on
linguistic understanding, OpenBookQA probes a deeper understanding of both the
topic---in the context of common knowledge---and the language it is expressed
in. Human performance on OpenBookQA is close to 92%, but many state-of-the-art
pre-trained QA methods perform surprisingly poorly, worse than several simple
neural baselines we develop. Our oracle experiments designed to circumvent the
knowledge retrieval bottleneck demonstrate the value of both the open book and
additional facts. We leave it as a challenge to solve the retrieval problem in
this multi-hop setting and to close the large gap to human performance.Comment: Published as conference long paper at EMNLP 201
