Determination of electromagnetic field exposure in public spaces
The monitoring of electromagnetic (EM) field, caused by the presence of radio
frequency (RF) and microwave radiation from ICT devices as various sources of EM field,
has emerged as an important technical and social challenge in terms of planning,
management and usage of open public spaces. Considering the necessity of EM field level
determination in the context of using ICT devices in service areas, as well as monitoring
of EM field exposure in public spaces, the several technical issues have been foreseen in
the analyses based on corresponding examples: from the method for modelling of EM
field propagation in the vicinity of RF and microwave sources - base stations for mobile
networks, broadcasting transmitters, local wireless networks, together with the distribution
of EM field from ICT devices, through the appropriate measurement and exposure assessment
methods, to the adequate software support for geo-visualisation, the data acquisition and

The role of places and spaces in lifelog retrieval
Finding relevant interesting items when searching or browsing within a large multi-modal personal lifelog archive is a significant challenge. The use of contextual cues to filter the collection and aid in the determination of relevant content is often suggested as means to address such challenges. This
work presents an exploration of the various locations, garnered through context logging, several participants engaged in during personal information access over a 15 month period. We investigate the implications of the varying data accessed across multiple locations for context-based retrieval from such collections. Our analysis highlights that a large number of spaces and places may be used for information
access, but high volume of content is accessed in few

The next wave of communication and applications rely on the new services
provided by Internet of Things which is becoming an important aspect in human
and machines future. The IoT services are a key solution for providing smart
environments in homes, buildings and cities. In the era of a massive number of
connected things and objects with a high grow rate, several challenges have
been raised such as management, aggregation and storage for big produced data.
In order to tackle some of these issues, cloud computing emerged to IoT as
Cloud of Things (CoT) which provides virtually unlimited cloud services to
enhance the large scale IoT platforms. There are several factors to be
considered in design and implementation of a CoT platform. One of the most
important and challenging problems is the heterogeneity of different objects.
This problem can be addressed by deploying suitable "Middleware". Middleware
sits between things and applications that make a reliable platform for
communication among things with different interfaces, operating systems, and
architectures. The main aim of this paper is to study the middleware
technologies for CoT. Toward this end, we first present the main features and
characteristics of middlewares. Next we study different architecture styles and
service domains. Then we presents several middlewares that are suitable for CoT
based platforms and lastly a list of current challenges and issues in design of

The simplicity project: easing the burden of using complex and heterogeneous ICT devices and services
As of today, to exploit the variety of different "services", users need to configure each of their devices by using different procedures and need to explicitly select among heterogeneous access technologies and protocols. In addition to that, users are authenticated and charged by different means. The lack of implicit human computer interaction, context-awareness and standardisation places an enormous burden of complexity on the shoulders of the final users. The IST-Simplicity project aims at leveraging such problems by: i) automatically creating and customizing a user communication space; ii) adapting services to user terminal characteristics and to users preferences; iii) orchestrating network capabilities. The aim of this paper is to present the technical framework of the IST-Simplicity project. Blackboard Rules for Coordinating Context-aware Applications in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
Thanks to improvements in wireless communication technologies and increasing
computing power in hand-held devices, mobile ad hoc networks are becoming an
ever-more present reality. Coordination languages are expected to become
important means in supporting this type of interaction. To this extent we argue
the interest of the Bach coordination language as a middleware that can handle
and react to context changes as well as cope with unpredictable physical
interruptions that occur in opportunistic network connections. More concretely,
our proposal is based on blackboard rules that model declaratively the actions
to be taken once the blackboard content reaches a predefined state, but also
that manage the engagement and disengagement of hosts and transient sharing of
blackboards. The idea of reactiveness has already been introduced in previous
work, but as will be appreciated by the reader, this article presents a new
