    Beaconless Packet Forwarding Approach for Vehicular Urban Environment

    Existing wireless technologies provide communication and information services to all fields of life. The one of the emerging and popular field is vehicular ad hoc networks, with its unique characteristics and highly mobile environment. Different types of routing protocols have been proposed to address the routing issues in network and one of the most efficient types is geographical routing. In this type of protocols, the beacon messages are using to update the node locations and positions. However, these protoocls have been suffered with high channel congestion issue in the network. To this end, we propose a beaconless packet forwarding strategy based on modified handshake messages mechanism. The protocol uses some realistic metrics to select the next forwarder node such as forward progresss and link quality. The protocol performance is evaluated with existing beacon and beaconless geographical routing protocols. The simulation results showed the better performance of the proposed protocol in terms of packet delay and data delivery ratio in realistic wireless channel conditions

    [EN] In a vehicular ad hoc network, the communication links are unsteady due to the rapidly changing topology, high mobility and traffic density in the urban environment. Most of the existing geographical routing protocols rely on the continuous transmission of beacon messages to update the neighbors' presence, leading to network congestion. Source-based approaches have been proven to be inefficient in the inherently unstable network. To this end, we propose an opportunistic beaconless packet forwarding approach based on a modified handshake mechanism for the urban vehicular environment. The protocol acts differently between intersections and at the intersection to find the next forwarder node toward the destination. The modified handshake mechanism contains link quality, forward progress and directional greedy metrics to determine the best relay node in the network. After designing the protocol, we compared its performance with existing routing protocols. The simulation results show the superior performance of the proposed protocol in terms of packet delay and data delivery ratio in realistic wireless channel conditions.The authors would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Deanship of Scientific Research at King Saud University for funding this research.     An Individual Node Delay Based Efficient Power Aware Routing Protocol for Wireless Heterogeneous Sensor Networks

    Miscellaneous node transmission ranges builds up Wireless Heterogeneous Sensor Networks (WHSNs). Designing an efficient, reliable and scalable routing protocol for WHSNs with intermittent asymmetric links is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose an efficient power aware routing scheme for WHSNs, which can provide loop-free, stateless, source-to-sink routing scheme without using prior information about neighbor. It uses both symmetric and asymmetric links to forward data from source to sink. The source node broadcasts location information to all its neighbor nodes. Each neighbor node calculates a delay slot based on the information obtained from the source to forward its power value to it. The node that has a minimum delay slot forwards the power earlier than the other nodes during contention phase and the delay slot is used to suppress the selection of unsuitable low-power nodes at that time. We also prove that our protocol is loop-free assuming no failures in greedy forwarding. By simulations we show that our protocol significantly outperforms the existing protocols in WHSNs

    Beaconless position based routing with guaranteed delivery for wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks

    Existing position-based routing algorithms, where packets are forwarded in the geographic direction of the destination, normally require that the forwarding node knows the positions of all neighbors in its transmission range. This information on direct neighbors is gained by observing beacon messages that each node sends out periodically. Several beaconless greedy routing schemes have been proposed recently. However, none of the existing beaconless schemes guarantee the delivery of packets. Moreover, they incur communication overhead by sending excessive control messages or by broadcasting data packets. In this paper, we describe how existing localized position based routing schemes that guarantee delivery can be made beaconless, while preserving the same routes. In our guaranteed delivery beaconless routing scheme, the next hop is selected through the use of control RTS/CTS messages and biased timeouts. In greedy mode, neighbor closest to destination responds first. In recovery mode, nodes closer to the source will select shorter timeouts, so that other neighbors, overhearing CTS packets, can eliminate their own CTS packets if they realize that their link to the source is not part of Gabriel graph. Nodes also cancel their packets after receiving data message sent by source to the selected neighbor. We analyze the behavior of our scheme on our simulation environment assuming ideal MAC, following GOAFR+ and GFG routing schemes.
