An occam Style Communications System for UNIX Networks
This document describes the design of a communications system which provides occam style communications primitives under a Unix environment, using TCP/IP protocols, and any number of other protocols deemed suitable as underlying transport layers. The system will integrate with a low overhead scheduler/kernel without incurring significant costs to the execution of processes within the run time environment. A survey of relevant occam and occam3 features and related research is followed by a look at the Unix and TCP/IP facilities which determine our working constraints, and a description of the T9000 transputer's Virtual Channel Processor, which was instrumental in our formulation. Drawing from the information presented here, a design for the communications system is subsequently proposed. Finally, a preliminary investigation of methods for lightweight access control to shared resources in an environment which does not provide support for critical sections, semaphores, or busy waiting, is made. This is presented with relevance to mutual exclusion problems which arise within the proposed design. Future directions for the evolution of this project are discussed in conclusion
Event-based State Estimation: An Emulation-based Approach
An event-based state estimation approach for reducing communication in a
networked control system is proposed. Multiple distributed sensor agents
observe a dynamic process and sporadically transmit their measurements to
estimator agents over a shared bus network. Local event-triggering protocols
ensure that data is transmitted only when necessary to meet a desired
estimation accuracy. The event-based design is shown to emulate the performance
of a centralised state observer design up to guaranteed bounds, but with
reduced communication. The stability results for state estimation are extended
to the distributed control system that results when the local estimates are
used for feedback control. Results from numerical simulations and hardware
experiments illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in reducing

Distributed Optimal Rate-Reliability-Lifetime Tradeoff in Wireless Sensor Networks
The transmission rate, delivery reliability and network lifetime are three
fundamental but conflicting design objectives in energy-constrained wireless
sensor networks. In this paper, we address the optimal
rate-reliability-lifetime tradeoff with link capacity constraint, reliability
constraint and energy constraint. By introducing the weight parameters, we
combine the objectives at rate, reliability, and lifetime into a single
objective to characterize the tradeoff among them. However, the optimization
formulation of the rate-reliability-reliability tradeoff is neither separable
nor convex. Through a series of transformations, a separable and convex problem
is derived, and an efficient distributed Subgradient Dual Decomposition
algorithm (SDD) is proposed. Numerical examples confirm its convergence. Also,
numerical examples investigate the impact of weight parameters on the rate
utility, reliability utility and network lifetime, which provide a guidance to
properly set the value of weight parameters for a desired performance of WSNs
according to the realistic application's requirements.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figure
Strategies for automatic planning: A collection of ideas
The main goal of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is to obtain science return from interplanetary probes. The uplink process is concerned with communicating commands to a spacecraft in order to achieve science objectives. There are two main parts to the development of the command file which is sent to a spacecraft. First, the activity planning process integrates the science requests for utilization of spacecraft time into a feasible sequence. Then the command generation process converts the sequence into a set of commands. The development of a feasible sequence plan is an expensive and labor intensive process requiring many months of effort. In order to save time and manpower in the uplink process, automation of parts of this process is desired. There is an ongoing effort to develop automatic planning systems. This has met with some success, but has also been informative about the nature of this effort. It is now clear that innovative techniques and state-of-the-art technology will be required in order to produce a system which can provide automatic sequence planning. As part of this effort to develop automatic planning systems, a survey of the literature, looking for known techniques which may be applicable to our work was conducted. Descriptions of and references for these methods are given, together with ideas for applying the techniques to automatic planning

Traffic engineering multi-layer optimization for wireless mesh network transmission a campus network routing protocol transmission performance inhancement
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityThe wireless mesh network is a potential network for the future due to its excellent inherent characteristic for dynamic self-healing, self-configuration and self-organization. It also has the advantage of easy interoperability networking and the ability to form multi-linked ad-hoc networks. It has a decentralized topology, is cheap and highly scalable. Furthermore, its ease in deployment and easy maintenance are other inherent networking qualities. These aforementioned qualities of the wireless mesh network bring advantages to transmission capability of heterogeneous networks. However, transmissions in wireless mesh network create comparative performance based challenges such as congestion, load-balancing, scalability over increasing networks and coverage capacity. Consequently, these challenges and problems in the routing and switching of packets in the wireless mesh network routing protocols led to a proposal on the resolution of these failures with a combination algorithm and a management based security for the network and its transmitted packets. There are equally contentious services like reliability of the network and quality of service for real-time multimedia traffic flows with other challenges such as path computation and selection in the wireless mesh network.
This thesis is therefore a cumulative proposal to the resolution of the outlined challenges and open research areas posed by using wireless mesh network routing protocol. It advances the resolution of these challenges in the mesh environment using a hybrid optimization – traffic engineering, to increase the effectiveness and the reliability of the network. It also proffers a cumulative resolution of the diverse contributions on wireless mesh network routing protocol and transmission. Adaptation and optimization are carried out on the wireless mesh network designed network using traffic engineering mechanism and technique. The research examines the patterns of mesh packet transmission and evaluates the challenges and failures in the mesh network packet transmission. It develops a solution based algorithm for resolutions and proposes the traffic engineering based solution.. These resultant performances and analysis are usually tested and compared over wireless mesh IEEE802.11n or other older proposed documented solution.
This thesis used a carefully designed campus mesh network to show a comparative evaluation of an optimal performance of the mesh nodes and routers over a normal IEE802.11n based wireless domain network to show differentiation by optimization using the created algorithms. Furthermore, the indexes of performance being the metric are used to measure the utility and the reliability, including capacity and throughput at the destination during traffic engineered transmission. In addition, the security of these transmitted data and packets are optimized under a traffic engineered technique. Finally, this thesis offers an understanding to the security contribution using traffic engineering resolution to create a management algorithm for processing and computation of the wireless mesh networks security needs. The results of this thesis confirmed, completed and extended the existing predictions with real measurement
Distributed Event-Based State Estimation for Networked Systems: An LMI-Approach
In this work, a dynamic system is controlled by multiple sensor-actuator
agents, each of them commanding and observing parts of the system's input and
output. The different agents sporadically exchange data with each other via a
common bus network according to local event-triggering protocols. From these
data, each agent estimates the complete dynamic state of the system and uses
its estimate for feedback control. We propose a synthesis procedure for
designing the agents' state estimators and the event triggering thresholds. The
resulting distributed and event-based control system is guaranteed to be stable
and to satisfy a predefined estimation performance criterion. The approach is
applied to the control of a vehicle platoon, where the method's trade-off
between performance and communication, and the scalability in the number of
