Benchmarking News Recommendations in a Living Lab
Most user-centric studies of information access systems in literature suffer from unrealistic settings or limited numbers of users who participate in the study. In order to address this issue, the idea of a living lab has been promoted. Living labs allow us to evaluate research hypotheses using a large number of users who satisfy their information need in a real context. In this paper, we introduce a living lab on news recommendation in real time. The living lab has first been organized as News Recommendation Challenge at ACM RecSysâ13 and then as campaign-style evaluation lab NEWSREEL at CLEFâ14. Within this lab, researchers were asked to provide news article recommendations to millions of users in real time. Different from user studies which have been performed in a laboratory, these users are following their own agenda. Consequently, laboratory bias on their behavior can be neglected. We outline the living lab scenario and the experimental setup of the two benchmarking events. We argue that the living lab can serve as reference point for the implementation of living labs for the evaluation of information access systems
The FĂschlĂĄr-News-Stories system: personalised access to an archive of TV news
The âFĂschlĂĄrâ systems are a family of tools for capturing, analysis, indexing, browsing, searching and summarisation of digital video information. FĂschlĂĄr-News-Stories, described in this paper, is one of those systems, and provides access to a growing archive of broadcast TV news. FĂschlĂĄr-News-Stories has several notable features including the fact that it automatically records TV news and segments a broadcast news program into stories, eliminating advertisements and credits at the start/end of the broadcast. FĂschlĂĄr-News-Stories supports access to individual stories via calendar lookup, text search through closed captions, automatically-generated links between related stories, and personalised access using a personalisation and recommender system based on collaborative filtering. Access to individual news stories is supported either by browsing keyframes with synchronised closed captions, or by playback of the recorded video. One strength of the FĂschlĂĄr-News-Stories system is that it is actually used, in practice, daily, to access news. Several aspects of the FĂschlĂĄr systems have been published before, bit in this paper we give a summary of the FĂschlĂĄr-News-Stories system in operation by following a scenario in which it is used and also outlining how the underlying system realises the functions it offers
Processing and Linking Audio Events in Large Multimedia Archives: The EU inEvent Project
In the inEvent EU project [1], we aim at structuring, retrieving, and sharing large archives of networked, and dynamically changing, multimedia recordings, mainly consisting of meetings, videoconferences, and lectures. More specifically, we are developing an integrated system that performs audiovisual processing of multimedia recordings, and labels them in terms of interconnected âhyper-events â (a notion inspired from hyper-texts). Each hyper-event is composed of simpler facets, including audio-video recordings and metadata, which are then easier to search, retrieve and share. In the present paper, we mainly cover the audio processing aspects of the system, including speech recognition, speaker diarization and linking (across recordings), the use of these features for hyper-event indexing and recommendation, and the search portal. We present initial results for feature extraction from lecture recordings using the TED talks. Twelve Theses on Reactive Rules for the Web
Reactivity, the ability to detect and react to events, is an
essential functionality in many information systems. In particular, Web
systems such as online marketplaces, adaptive (e.g., recommender) systems,
and Web services, react to events such as Web page updates or
data posted to a server.
This article investigates issues of relevance in designing high-level programming
languages dedicated to reactivity on the Web. It presents
twelve theses on features desirable for a language of reactive rules tuned
to programming Web and Semantic Web applications
LRMM: Learning to Recommend with Missing Modalities
Multimodal learning has shown promising performance in content-based
recommendation due to the auxiliary user and item information of multiple
modalities such as text and images. However, the problem of incomplete and
missing modality is rarely explored and most existing methods fail in learning
a recommendation model with missing or corrupted modalities. In this paper, we
propose LRMM, a novel framework that mitigates not only the problem of missing
modalities but also more generally the cold-start problem of recommender
systems. We propose modality dropout (m-drop) and a multimodal sequential
autoencoder (m-auto) to learn multimodal representations for complementing and
imputing missing modalities. Extensive experiments on real-world Amazon data
show that LRMM achieves state-of-the-art performance on rating prediction
tasks. More importantly, LRMM is more robust to previous methods in alleviating
data-sparsity and the cold-start problem.Comment: 11 pages, EMNLP 201
Cultural consequences of computing technology
Computing technology is clearly a technical revolution, but will most probably bring about a cultural revolution\ud
as well. The effects of this technology on human culture will be dramatic and far-reaching. Yet, computers and\ud
electronic networks are but the latest development in a long history of cognitive tools, such as writing and printing.\ud
We will examine this history, which exhibits long-term trends toward an increasing democratization of culture,\ud
before turning to today's technology. Within this framework, we will analyze the probable effects of computing on\ud
culture: dynamical representations, generalized networking, constant modification and reproduction. To address the\ud
problems posed by this new technical environment, we will suggest possible remedies. In particular, the role of\ud
social institutions will be discussed, and we will outline the shape of new electronic institutions able to deal with the\ud
information flow on the internet
