Jointly Modeling Embedding and Translation to Bridge Video and Language
Automatically describing video content with natural language is a fundamental
challenge of multimedia. Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), which models sequence
dynamics, has attracted increasing attention on visual interpretation. However,
most existing approaches generate a word locally with given previous words and
the visual content, while the relationship between sentence semantics and
visual content is not holistically exploited. As a result, the generated
sentences may be contextually correct but the semantics (e.g., subjects, verbs
or objects) are not true.
This paper presents a novel unified framework, named Long Short-Term Memory
with visual-semantic Embedding (LSTM-E), which can simultaneously explore the
learning of LSTM and visual-semantic embedding. The former aims to locally
maximize the probability of generating the next word given previous words and
visual content, while the latter is to create a visual-semantic embedding space
for enforcing the relationship between the semantics of the entire sentence and
visual content. Our proposed LSTM-E consists of three components: a 2-D and/or
3-D deep convolutional neural networks for learning powerful video
representation, a deep RNN for generating sentences, and a joint embedding
model for exploring the relationships between visual content and sentence
semantics. The experiments on YouTube2Text dataset show that our proposed
LSTM-E achieves to-date the best reported performance in generating natural
sentences: 45.3% and 31.0% in terms of BLEU@4 and METEOR, respectively. We also
demonstrate that LSTM-E is superior in predicting Subject-Verb-Object (SVO)
triplets to several state-of-the-art techniques
Evaluating Content-centric vs User-centric Ad Affect Recognition
Despite the fact that advertisements (ads) often include strongly emotional
content, very little work has been devoted to affect recognition (AR) from ads.
This work explicitly compares content-centric and user-centric ad AR
methodologies, and evaluates the impact of enhanced AR on computational
advertising via a user study. Specifically, we (1) compile an affective ad
dataset capable of evoking coherent emotions across users; (2) explore the
efficacy of content-centric convolutional neural network (CNN) features for
encoding emotions, and show that CNN features outperform low-level emotion
descriptors; (3) examine user-centered ad AR by analyzing Electroencephalogram
(EEG) responses acquired from eleven viewers, and find that EEG signals encode
emotional information better than content descriptors; (4) investigate the
relationship between objective AR and subjective viewer experience while
watching an ad-embedded online video stream based on a study involving 12
users. To our knowledge, this is the first work to (a) expressly compare user
vs content-centered AR for ads, and (b) study the relationship between modeling

Automatic tagging and geotagging in video collections and communities
Automatically generated tags and geotags hold great promise
to improve access to video collections and online communi-
ties. We overview three tasks offered in the MediaEval 2010
benchmarking initiative, for each, describing its use scenario, definition and the data set released. For each task, a reference algorithm is presented that was used within MediaEval 2010 and comments are included on lessons learned. The Tagging Task, Professional involves automatically matching episodes in a collection of Dutch television with subject labels drawn from the keyword thesaurus used by the archive staff. The Tagging Task, Wild Wild Web involves automatically predicting the tags that are assigned by users to their online videos. Finally, the Placing Task requires automatically assigning geo-coordinates to videos. The specification of each task admits the use of the full range of available information including user-generated metadata, speech recognition transcripts, audio, and visual features
Digging Deeper into Egocentric Gaze Prediction
This paper digs deeper into factors that influence egocentric gaze. Instead
of training deep models for this purpose in a blind manner, we propose to
inspect factors that contribute to gaze guidance during daily tasks. Bottom-up
saliency and optical flow are assessed versus strong spatial prior baselines.
Task-specific cues such as vanishing point, manipulation point, and hand
regions are analyzed as representatives of top-down information. We also look
into the contribution of these factors by investigating a simple recurrent
neural model for ego-centric gaze prediction. First, deep features are
extracted for all input video frames. Then, a gated recurrent unit is employed
to integrate information over time and to predict the next fixation. We also
propose an integrated model that combines the recurrent model with several
top-down and bottom-up cues. Extensive experiments over multiple datasets
reveal that (1) spatial biases are strong in egocentric videos, (2) bottom-up
saliency models perform poorly in predicting gaze and underperform spatial
biases, (3) deep features perform better compared to traditional features, (4)
as opposed to hand regions, the manipulation point is a strong influential cue
for gaze prediction, (5) combining the proposed recurrent model with bottom-up
cues, vanishing points and, in particular, manipulation point results in the
best gaze prediction accuracy over egocentric videos, (6) the knowledge
transfer works best for cases where the tasks or sequences are similar, and (7)
task and activity recognition can benefit from gaze prediction. Our findings
suggest that (1) there should be more emphasis on hand-object interaction and
(2) the egocentric vision community should consider larger datasets including
diverse stimuli and more subjects.Comment: presented at WACV 201
Unmasking Clever Hans Predictors and Assessing What Machines Really Learn
Current learning machines have successfully solved hard application problems,
reaching high accuracy and displaying seemingly "intelligent" behavior. Here we
apply recent techniques for explaining decisions of state-of-the-art learning
machines and analyze various tasks from computer vision and arcade games. This
showcases a spectrum of problem-solving behaviors ranging from naive and
short-sighted, to well-informed and strategic. We observe that standard
performance evaluation metrics can be oblivious to distinguishing these diverse
problem solving behaviors. Furthermore, we propose our semi-automated Spectral
Relevance Analysis that provides a practically effective way of characterizing
and validating the behavior of nonlinear learning machines. This helps to
assess whether a learned model indeed delivers reliably for the problem that it
was conceived for. Furthermore, our work intends to add a voice of caution to
the ongoing excitement about machine intelligence and pledges to evaluate and
judge some of these recent successes in a more nuanced manner.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nature Communication
How did the discussion go: Discourse act classification in social media conversations
We propose a novel attention based hierarchical LSTM model to classify
discourse act sequences in social media conversations, aimed at mining data
from online discussion using textual meanings beyond sentence level. The very
uniqueness of the task is the complete categorization of possible pragmatic
roles in informal textual discussions, contrary to extraction of
question-answers, stance detection or sarcasm identification which are very
much role specific tasks. Early attempt was made on a Reddit discussion
dataset. We train our model on the same data, and present test results on two
different datasets, one from Reddit and one from Facebook. Our proposed model
outperformed the previous one in terms of domain independence; without using
platform-dependent structural features, our hierarchical LSTM with word
relevance attention mechanism achieved F1-scores of 71\% and 66\% respectively
to predict discourse roles of comments in Reddit and Facebook discussions.
Efficiency of recurrent and convolutional architectures in order to learn
discursive representation on the same task has been presented and analyzed,
with different word and comment embedding schemes. Our attention mechanism
enables us to inquire into relevance ordering of text segments according to
their roles in discourse. We present a human annotator experiment to unveil
important observations about modeling and data annotation. Equipped with our
text-based discourse identification model, we inquire into how heterogeneous
non-textual features like location, time, leaning of information etc. play
their roles in charaterizing online discussions on Facebook
