    Vertebra Shape Classification using MLP for Content-Based Image Retrieval

    A desirable content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system would classify extracted image features to support some form of semantic retrieval. The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, an intramural R&D division of the National Library for Medicine (NLM), maintains an archive of digitized X-rays of the cervical and lumbar spine taken as part of the second national health and nutrition examination survey (NHANES II). It is our goal to provide shape-based access to digitized X-rays including retrieval on automatically detected and classified pathology, e.g., anterior osteophytes. This is done using radius of curvature analysis along the anterior portion, and morphological analysis for quantifying protrusion regions along the vertebra boundary. Experimental results are presented for the classification of 704 cervical spine vertebrae by evaluating the features using a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) based approach.     The application of computer vision to the image retrieval problem is Content-based image retrieval (CBIR). The interest in digital images is growing day by day. Users in professional fields are make use of the opportunities offered by the ability to access and manipulate remotely-stored images in different ways. The problems in image retrieval are becoming widely accepted, and the finding solution is an active area for research and development. This dissertation work aims at developing a hybrid scheme for intelligent image retrieval system using neural networks. Each image in the database is indexed by a visual feature vector, which is extracted using color moments and discrete cosine transform coefficients. The query is characterized by a set of predefined semantic labels. Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol 11487. Springer.In this paper, we present a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for feature extraction in Content based Image Retrieval (CBIR). The proposed CNN aims at reducing the semantic gap between low level and high-level features. Thus, improving retrieval results. Our CNN is the result of a transfer learning technique using Alexnet pretrained network. It learns how to extract representative features from a learning database and then uses this knowledge in query feature extraction. Experimentations performed on Wang (Corel 1K) database show a significant improvement in terms of precision over the state of the art classic approaches.Universidad de Málaga.
