LIGHTNESS: a function-virtualizable software defined data center network with all-optical circuit/packet switching

All-optical dynamic data center network (DCN) architectures are strong candidates to overcome those adversities, especially when they are combined with an intelligent software defined control plane. In this paper, we report the first harmonious integration of an optical flexible hardware framework operated by an agile software and virtualization platform. The LIGHTNESS deeply programmable all-optical circuit and packet switched data plane is able to perform unicast/multicast switch-over on-demand, while the powerful software defined networking (SDN) control plane enables the virtualization of computing and network resources creating a virtual data center and virtual network functions (VNF) on top of the data plane. We experimentally demonstrate realistic intra DCN with deterministic latencies for both unicast and multicast, showcasing monitoring, and database migration scenarios each of which is enabled by an associated network function virtualization element. Enhancing the 3GPP V2X architecture with information-centric networking
Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications allow a vehicle to interact with other vehicles and with communication parties in its vicinity (e.g., road-side units, pedestrian users, etc.) with the primary goal of making the driving and traveling experience safer, smarter and more comfortable. A wide set of V2X-tailored specifications have been identified by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) with focus on the design of architecture enhancements and a flexible air interface to ensure ultra-low latency, highly reliable and high-throughput connectivity as the ultimate aim. This paper discusses the potential of leveraging Information-Centric Networking (ICN) principles in the 3GPP architecture for V2X communications. We consider Named Data Networking (NDN) as reference ICN architecture and elaborate on the specific design aspects, required changes and enhancements in the 3GPP V2X architecture to enable NDN-based data exchange as an alternative/complementary solution to traditional IP networking, which barely matches the dynamics of vehicular environments. Resource Allocation Frameworks for Network-coded Layered Multimedia Multicast Services
The explosive growth of content-on-the-move, such as video streaming to
mobile devices, has propelled research on multimedia broadcast and multicast
schemes. Multi-rate transmission strategies have been proposed as a means of
delivering layered services to users experiencing different downlink channel
conditions. In this paper, we consider Point-to-Multipoint layered service
delivery across a generic cellular system and improve it by applying different
random linear network coding approaches. We derive packet error probability
expressions and use them as performance metrics in the formulation of resource
allocation frameworks. The aim of these frameworks is both the optimization of
the transmission scheme and the minimization of the number of broadcast packets
on each downlink channel, while offering service guarantees to a predetermined
fraction of users. As a case of study, our proposed frameworks are then adapted
to the LTE-A standard and the eMBMS technology. We focus on the delivery of a
video service based on the H.264/SVC standard and demonstrate the advantages of
layered network coding over multi-rate transmission. Furthermore, we establish
that the choice of both the network coding technique and resource allocation
method play a critical role on the network footprint, and the quality of each

Internet Protocol version 6 and the future of home networking
Home networking will be more of a necessity in the future than it is today. The homes of the future will make our lives easier in many ways. As microprocessors become less expensive and require less power they will be implanted into many of the common household items used everyday. Appliances and components will evolve into smart devices that communicate with each other. Connecting these devices will become more important as devices incorporate new technologies. It will be necessary to build a network that can handle the needs of this type of computing environment. The home networks of the future will require many of the same features that can be found in today\u27s corporate networks. However, there will be four issues that will determine the level of success of implementing home networks. The first issue is the increase in volume of the devices accessing and utilizing the Internet. Security will be a high priority for homeowners, since the data that accumulates and circulates in and out of the home is sensitive and personal. The third critical issue is ease of use, because the average homeowner does not have the skills necessary to configure and maintain networks. The last issue that will be important in the home is the increased need for bandwidth and the ability to accommodate all types of data traffic. There is no doubt that the Internet Protocol will be important in future home networks. Some proponents of IP say IP over everything The trend has been finding new ways of making IP the answer to all types of voice and data communications. Initially the Internet Protocol was designed for a specific application. Over time, IPv4 has been able to successfully adapt to the changing needs and demands of the Internet. At one point in the early 90\u27s, it was feared that IPv4 would not be able to meet the future needs. As a result, The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) developed a next generation Internet Protocol, referred to as Internet Protocol version 6. In the meantime, new fixes to old IPv4 problems have been temporarily halted. The implementation of IPv6 has been extremely slow since the imminent danger of declining address space has been temporarily addressed. IP version 6 has many new features built into the protocol that will streamline and enhance many aspects of the network, but these features alone may not be enough to cause the displacement of the massive infrastructure of IPv4. Will IPv6 be better at handling the demands of the home networks of the future, or will the additions and updates for IPv4 be sufficient? Network coding for transport protocols
With the proliferation of smart devices that require Internet connectivity anytime, anywhere, and the recent technological
advances that make it possible, current networked systems will have to provide a various range of services, such as content
distribution, in a wide range of settings, including wireless environments. Wireless links may experience temporary losses,
however, TCP, the de facto protocol for robust unicast communications, reacts by reducing the congestion window drastically
and injecting less traffic in the network. Consequently the wireless links are underutilized and the overall performance of the
TCP protocol in wireless environments is poor. As content delivery (i.e. multicasting) services, such as BBC iPlayer, become
popular, the network needs to support the reliable transport of the data at high rates, and with specific delay constraints. A
typical approach to deliver content in a scalable way is to rely on peer-to-peer technology (used by BitTorrent, Spotify and
PPLive), where users share their resources, including bandwidth, storage space, and processing power. Still, these systems
suffer from the lack of incentives for resource sharing and cooperation, and this problem is exacerbated in the presence of
heterogenous users, where a tit-for-tat scheme is difficult to implement.
Due to the issues highlighted above, current network architectures need to be changed in order to accommodate the users¿
demands for reliable and quality communications. In other words, the emergent need for advanced modes of information
transport requires revisiting and improving network components at various levels of the network stack.
The innovative paradigm of network coding has been shown as a promising technique to change the design of networked
systems, by providing a shift from how data flows traditionally move through the network. This shift implies that data flows are
no longer kept separate, according to the ¿store-and-forward¿ model, but they are also processed and mixed in the network. By
appropriately combining data by means of network coding, it is expected to obtain significant benefits in several areas of
network design and architecture.
In this thesis, we set out to show the benefits of including network coding into three communication paradigms, namely point-topoint
communications (e.g. unicast), point-to-multipoint communications (e.g. multicast), and multipoint-to-multipoint
communications (e.g. peer-to-peer networks). For the first direction, we propose a network coding-based multipath scheme and
show that TCP unicast sessions are feasible in highly volatile wireless environments. For point-to-multipoint communications,
we give an algorithm to optimally achieve all the rate pairs from the rate region in the case of degraded multicast over the
combination network. We also propose a system for live streaming that ensures reliability and quality of service to heterogenous
users, even if data transmissions occur over lossy wireless links. Finally, for multipoint-to-multipoint communications, we design
a system to provide incentives for live streaming in a peer-to-peer setting, where users have subscribed to different levels of
quality.
Our work shows that network coding enables a reliable transport of data, even in highly volatile environments, or in delay
sensitive scenarios such as live streaming, and facilitates the implementation of an efficient incentive system, even in the
presence of heterogenous users. Thus, network coding can solve the challenges faced by next generation networks
