Towards hand biometrics in mobile devices
The increasing demand of security oriented to mobile applications has raised the attention to biometrics, as a proper and suitable solution for providing secure environment to mobile devices. With this aim, this document presents a biometric system based on hand geometry oriented to mobile devices, involving a high degree of freedom in terms of illumination, hand rotation and distance to camera. The user takes a picture of their own hand in the free space, without requiring any flat surface to locate the hand, and without removals of rings, bracelets or watches. The proposed biometric system relies on an accurate segmentation procedure, able to isolate hands from any background; a feature extraction, invariant to orientation, illumination, distance to camera and background; and a user classification, based on k-Nearest Neighbor approach, able to provide an accurate results on individual identification. The proposed method has been evaluated with two own databases collected with a HTC mobile. First database contains 120 individuals, with 20 acquisitions of both hands. Second database is a synthetic database, containing 408000 images of hand samples in different backgrounds: tiles, grass, water, sand, soil and the like. The system is able to identify individuals properly with False Reject Rate of 5.78% and False Acceptance Rate of 0.089%, using 60 features (15 features per finger

Spectral Geometry and Causality
For a physical interpretation of a theory of quantum gravity, it is necessary
to recover classical spacetime, at least approximately. However, quantum
gravity may eventually provide classical spacetimes by giving spectral data
similar to those appearing in noncommutative geometry, rather than by giving
directly a spacetime manifold. It is shown that a globally hyperbolic
Lorentzian manifold can be given by spectral data. A new phenomenon in the
context of spectral geometry is observed: causal relationships. The employment
of the causal relationships of spectral data is shown to lead to a highly
efficient description of Lorentzian manifolds, indicating the possible
usefulness of this approach. Connections to free quantum field theory are
discussed for both motivation and physical interpretation. It is conjectured
that the necessary spectral data can be generically obtained from an effective
field theory having the fundamental structures of generalized quantum
mechanics: a decoherence functional and a choice of histories.Comment: AMS-Latex, 14 pages, 3 figures, using epsf macr
c-map as c=1 string
We show the existence of a duality between the c-map space describing the
universal hypermultiplet at tree level and the matrix model description of
two-dimensional string theory compactified at a self-dual radius and perturbed
by a sine-Liouville potential. It appears as a particular case of a general
relation between the twistor description of four-dimensional quaternionic
geometries and the Lax formalism for Toda hierarchy. Furthermore, we give an
evidence that the instanton corrections to the c-map metric coming from
NS5-branes can be encoded into the Baker-Akhiezer function of the integrable
hierarchy.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figure
TBA for non-perturbative moduli spaces
Recently, an exact description of instanton corrections to the moduli spaces
of 4d N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on a circle and Calabi-Yau
compactifications of Type II superstring theories was found. The equations
determining the instanton contributions turn out to have the form of
Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. We explore further this relation and, in
particular, we identify the contact potential of quaternionic string moduli
space with the free energy of the integrable system and the Kahler potential of
the gauge theory moduli space with the Yang-Yang functional. We also show that
the corresponding S-matrix satisfies all usual constraints of 2d integrable
models, including crossing and bootstrap, and derive the associated Y-system.
Surprisingly, in the simplest case the Y-system is described by the MacMahon
function relevant for crystal melting and topological strings.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur
