M-health adoption by healthcare professionals : a systematic review

    Get PDF
Objective The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize current knowledge of the factors influencing healthcare professional adoption of mobile health (m-health) applications. Methods Covering a period from 2000 to 2014, we conducted a systematic literature search on four electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychInfo). We also consulted references from included studies. We included studies if they reported the perceptions of healthcare professionals regarding barriers and facilitators to m-health utilization, if they were published in English, Spanish, or French and if they presented an empirical study design (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods). Two authors independently assessed study quality and performed content analysis using a validated extraction grid with pre-established categorization of barriers and facilitators. Results The search strategy led to a total of 4223 potentially relevant papers, of which 33 met the inclusion criteria. Main perceived adoption factors to m-health at the individual, organizational, and contextual levels were the following: perceived usefulness and ease of use, design and technical concerns, cost, time, privacy and security issues, familiarity with the technology, risk-benefit assessment, and interaction with others (colleagues, patients, and management). Conclusion This systematic review provides a set of key elements making it possible to understand the challenges and opportunities for m-health utilization by healthcare providers

    Get PDF
During the last decade, there has been tremendous growth in mobile penetration in many countries across the globe and most interestingly in a number of developing countries. On the other hand around, half of the world’s population is deprived of banking and financial services. This paper is based on a study that was aimed to identify drivers and inhibitors for adoption of MFS among the rural under-banked population and to compare the same with that of the existing studies. During the study, an extensive review of literature was conducted to identify the factors that were studied and found significantly affecting the adoption of mobile financial services. This was followed by an exploratory qualitative research conducted among the rural under-banked population of three distinct states in India. The findings of the study indicate that the demand for banking and financial services and the amount of hardships faced in availing these services through the existing channels of delivery can act as strong drivers for MFS adoption among the rural under-banked. On the other hand, factors like lack of trust on technology and lack of technology readiness were found to act as barriers to the adoption of MFS.

The aim of this research is to identify factors affecting individual’s intention to purchase a Smartphone from the perspectives of technology adoption and technology dependence. This study takes into account the role of cell phone dependence and hedonic aspects of cell phone use, by combining technology acceptance model, diffusion of innovation theory and theory of optimal flow, in order to propose a new model for Smartphone purchase intention. The result of the study indicates that ‘cell phone dependence’, ‘enjoyment associated with using cell phone’ and ‘exposure to Smartphone’ have significant effects on ‘intention to use Smartphone’ which in turn positively affects ‘intention to purchase Smartphone’. This can justify the self-reinforcing increase in Smartphone purchases in recent years. The study concludes that the hedonic aspects of cell phone use and the degree of individuals’ dependence on cell phone are important factors attributing to their intention to purchase a Smartphone

    Get PDF
With the rapidly growing economy in the past few decades, people of China (mainland) are now enjoying increasingly more economic benefits than ever before. Of many growing technologies, mobile devices, especially cell phones, have been gaining popularity throughout the country. According to the latest statistics in 2007, more than one third of Chinese have cell phones. In addition to the basic uses of voice communication, cell phones have many other promising applications. Particularly, as a pervasive technology, mobile devices offer a great opportunity to deliver health information directly to people with an affordable cost. This paper analyzes the potential of mobile health information systems in China. This prospective analysis will be conducted from four important perspectives: technology, market demand, business model, and government policy

A preliminary laddering analysis on mobile services usage

This paper proposes the use of laddering technique to determine the decision making process to adoption. Means end theory reveals the human values that are fulfilled for the individual by using various mtechnology and services. Preliminary findings of a bigger study are presented. IT shows that mobile technology and services often fulfil such basic needs as self-esteem, achievement, individuality, belonging and well-being. Exploring the realization of values as a theoretical framework offers researchers a way forward in environments characterised by individual technology decisions

A Meta Analysis on Adoption of Mobile Financial Services

    Get PDF
During the last decade, there has been tremendous growth in mobile penetration in many countries across the globe including a number of developing countries. The total number of mobile subscription 5 billion by the end of 2010 and is further expected to grow multi-folds. On the other hand, around 2.5 billion adults worldwide do not have a savings or credit account with either a regulated bank or alternative financial institution (such as a microfinance institution). Around one billion people in emerging markets have a mobile phone but no access to banking services. This scenario has opened immense opportunities for organizations including banks, insurance companies and telecom operators to strengthen their customer base and increase revenue by providing various financial services to the consumers through mobile technology. Hence, it becomes very important to understand the factors that would act as drivers or inhibitors towards the adoption of mobile financial services (MFS). Quite a few studies have been conducted across the globe to determine the factors affecting adoption of MFS. This paper provides a Meta analysis of the existing academic literature on MFS and determines the strength of the factors and their linkages through a scoring model based on the type of publication. The findings of the study would be beneficial for further research in understanding the dimensions to be considered for developing adoption model for MFS. The findings can also be used by the practitioners involved in MFS in understanding the factors affecting demand for such services.

This paper draws upon innovation diffusion theory and more recent conceptualizations of IT adoption behavior to examine differences among Jordanian Internet across Rogers’ adopter categories. We extend Rogers’ theory by characterizing adopter categories based on personality, attitudinal and situational variables recently found to be salient in IT adoption behaviors, and determine that young, educated and upwardly-mobile members of developing economies in the Middle East and North Africa region are the best target for increasing the effectiveness of diffusion of information and communication technology initiatives

Many banks in Sri Lanka are starting to offer banking services through mobile phones. However, not many studies investigate the factors that may help the bankers to design mobile services, which are suitable for and adoptable by bank customers. This study fills this gap and examines a number of factors affecting the mobile banking adoption. Using Diffusion of Innovation as a baseline theory, a convenient sample of 40 actual mobile banking customers was selected from four commercial banks in Kurunegala District. Data are obtained by using self-administrated questionnaire and analyzed with the use of SPSS V 21. It is found that perceived usefulness, perceived risk, and compatibility have impact on M-banking adoption. Contrary to the findings in extant literature, social influences have no significant effect on adoption. The findings of this study will have practical implications for banking industry in Sri Lanka. It is recommended that, commercial banks should demonstrate to their customers the advantage they are bound to have by adopting and using mobile banking over using conservative banking methods. It is also advisable to examine the effects of mobile banking on profitability of commercial banks in Sri Lanka
