A cognition-analogous approach to early-stage creative ideation support in music composition software

Examination of the underlying principles of creativity reveal theoretical aspects that have not been well explored in creativity facilitation software. Most significantly of these, there has been little investigation into exploiting the distinctions between early- and late-stage creative processes and the attendant differences in cognitive processing active at those times, nor into employing the structural scaffolding embedded within creative works and the manner in which these can be extracted and harnessed to define levels of abstraction through which the material can be viewed and manipulated. The Wheelsong project was conceived to exploit these principles, in the service of devising more creatively facilitative music composition tools, by focusing on these earlier, exploratory stages of the creative process, and by privileging structure over minutiae, in alignment with the mode of cognition (and corresponding user needs) that dominate the exploratory phase. Explorations conducted with Wheelsong demonstrate that the platform embraces broad stylistic and cultural ranges of output. Experiments comparing the creative merits of early-stage, fragmentary outputs produced by Wheelsong against those produced by traditional representation schemes show a substantial improvement in both subjective quality and diversity indicators adhering to the structurally produced candidates, as measured by human judges

Employing Strategy in Measures of Executive Functioning

Although various dementia-related executive deficits have been identified, the functional state of the frontal lobe during healthy aging remains unclear (Raz et al., 2005). The proposed study examines the use of strategy in measures of executive functioning in younger and older adults. Specifically, the strategy types of a nonverbal fluency task are shown to differentially correlate with the actual output generated by participants. The strategies employed here are compared between the two age groups, illustrating that older adults use the best strategy significantly less than younger adults, even when controlling for output differences, which may support the frontal lobe hypothesis of aging. The strategy types were shown to have no linear relationship with education level. Therefore, the possibility of using strategy type in this nonverbal fluency measure as a nonverbal premorbid indicator is not likel

Networks and Stories. Analyzing the Transmission of the Feminist Intangible Cultural Heritage on Twitter

This article belongs to the Special Issue of Big Data Cogn.Comput.= "Big Data Analytics for Cultural Heritage"Internet social media is a key space in which the memorial resources of social movements, including the stories and knowledge of previous generations, are organised, disseminated, and reinterpreted. This is especially important for movements such as feminism, which places great emphasis on the transmission of an intangible cultural legacy between its different generations or waves, which are conformed through these cultural transmissions. In this sense, several authors have highlighted the importance of social media and hashtivism in shaping the fourth wave of feminism that has been taking place in recent years (e.g., #metoo). The aim of this article is to present to the scientific community a hybrid methodological proposal for the network and content analysis of audiences and their interactions on Twitter: we will do so by describing and evaluating the results of different research we have carried out in the field of feminist hashtivism. Structural analysis methods such as social network analysis have demonstrated their capacity to be applied to the analysis of social media interactions as a mixed methodology, that is, both quantitative and qualitative. This article shows the potential of a specific methodological process that combines inductive and inferential reasoning with hypothetico-deductive approaches. By applying the methodology developed in the case studies included in the article, it is shown that these two modes of reasoning work best when they are used together. This research was funded by Basque Government grant number IT-1112

Toward an Interoperable Dynamic Network Analysis Toolkit

    Get PDF
To facilitate the analysis of real and simulated data on groups, organizations and societies, tools and measures are needed that can handle relational or network data that is multi-mode, multi-link and multi-time period in which nodes and edges have attributes with possible data errors and missing data. The integrated CASOS dynamic network analysis toolkit described in this paper is an interoperable set of scalable software tools. These tools form a toolchain that facilitate the dynamic extraction, analysis, visualization and reasoning about key actors, hidden groups, vulnerabilities and changes in such data at varying levels of fidelity. We present these tools and illustrate their capabilities using data collected from a series of 368 texts on an organizational system interfaced with covert networks in the Middle East
