Low-density MDS codes and factors of complete graphs
We present a class of array code of size n×l, where l=2n or 2n+1, called B-Code. The distances of the B-Code and its dual are 3 and l-1, respectively. The B-Code and its dual are optimal in the sense that i) they are maximum-distance separable (MDS), ii) they have an optimal encoding property, i.e., the number of the parity bits that are affected by change of a single information bit is minimal, and iii) they have optimal length. Using a new graph description of the codes, we prove an equivalence relation between the construction of the B-Code (or its dual) and a combinatorial problem known as perfect one-factorization of complete graphs, thus obtaining constructions of two families of the B-Code and its dual, one of which is new. Efficient decoding algorithms are also given, both for erasure correcting and for error correcting. The existence of perfect one-factorizations for every complete graph with an even number of nodes is a 35 years long conjecture in graph theory. The construction of B-Codes of arbitrary odd length will provide an affirmative answer to the conjecture
The Perfect Binary One-Error-Correcting Codes of Length 15: Part II--Properties
A complete classification of the perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of
length 15 as well as their extensions of length 16 was recently carried out in
[P. R. J. \"Osterg{\aa}rd and O. Pottonen, "The perfect binary
one-error-correcting codes of length 15: Part I--Classification," IEEE Trans.
Inform. Theory vol. 55, pp. 4657--4660, 2009]. In the current accompanying
work, the classified codes are studied in great detail, and their main
properties are tabulated. The results include the fact that 33 of the 80
Steiner triple systems of order 15 occur in such codes. Further understanding
is gained on full-rank codes via switching, as it turns out that all but two
full-rank codes can be obtained through a series of such transformations from
the Hamming code. Other topics studied include (non)systematic codes, embedded
one-error-correcting codes, and defining sets of codes. A classification of
certain mixed perfect codes is also obtained.Comment: v2: fixed two errors (extension of nonsystematic codes, table of

Algebraic number theory and code design for Rayleigh fading channels
Algebraic number theory is having an increasing impact in code design for many different coding applications, such as single antenna fading channels and more recently, MIMO systems.
Extended work has been done on single antenna fading channels, and algebraic lattice codes have been proven to be an effective tool. The general framework has been settled in the last ten years and many explicit code constructions based on algebraic number theory are now available.
The aim of this work is to provide both an overview on algebraic lattice code designs for Rayleigh fading channels, as well as a tutorial introduction to algebraic number theory. The basic facts of this mathematical field will be illustrated by many examples and by the use of a computer algebra freeware in order to make it more accessible
to a large audience
Tables of subspace codes
One of the main problems of subspace coding asks for the maximum possible
cardinality of a subspace code with minimum distance at least over
, where the dimensions of the codewords, which are vector
spaces, are contained in . In the special case of
one speaks of constant dimension codes. Since this (still) emerging
field is very prosperous on the one hand side and there are a lot of
connections to classical objects from Galois geometry it is a bit difficult to
keep or to obtain an overview about the current state of knowledge. To this end
we have implemented an on-line database of the (at least to us) known results
at \url{subspacecodes.uni-bayreuth.de}. The aim of this recurrently updated
technical report is to provide a user guide how this technical tool can be used
in research projects and to describe the so far implemented theoretic and
algorithmic knowledge.Comment: 44 pages, 6 tables, 7 screenshot
