Equivalence-based Security for Querying Encrypted Databases: Theory and Application to Privacy Policy Audits
Motivated by the problem of simultaneously preserving confidentiality and
usability of data outsourced to third-party clouds, we present two different
database encryption schemes that largely hide data but reveal enough
information to support a wide-range of relational queries. We provide a
security definition for database encryption that captures confidentiality based
on a notion of equivalence of databases from the adversary's perspective. As a
specific application, we adapt an existing algorithm for finding violations of
privacy policies to run on logs encrypted under our schemes and observe low to
moderate overheads.Comment: CCS 2015 paper technical report, in progres
Reconfigurable Mobile Multimedia Systems
This paper discusses reconfigurability issues in lowpower hand-held multimedia systems, with particular emphasis on energy conservation. We claim that a radical new approach has to be taken in order to fulfill the requirements - in terms of processing power and energy consumption - of future mobile applications. A reconfigurable systems-architecture in combination with a QoS driven operating system is introduced that can deal with the inherent dynamics of a mobile system. We present the preliminary results of studies we have done on reconfiguration in hand-held mobile computers: by having reconfigurable media streams, by using reconfigurable processing modules and by migrating functions

Secure communication using dynamic VPN provisioning in an Inter-Cloud environment
Most of the current cloud computing platforms offer Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model, which aims to provision basic virtualised computing resources as on-demand and dynamic services. Nevertheless, a single cloud does not have limitless resources to offer to its users, hence the notion of an Inter-Cloud enviroment where a cloud can use the infrastructure resources of other clouds. However, there is no common framework in existence that allows the srevice owners to seamlessly provision even some basic services across multiple cloud service providers, albeit not due to any inherent incompatibility or proprietary nature of the foundation technologies on which these cloud platforms are built. In this paper we present a novel solution which aims to cover a gap in a subsection of this problem domain. Our solution offer a security architecture that enables service owners to provision a dynamic and service-oriented secure virtual private network on top of multiple cloud IaaS providers. It does this by leveraging the scalability, robustness and flexibility of peer- to-peer overlay techniques to eliminate the manual configuration, key management and peer churn problems encountered in setting up the secure communication channels dynamically, between different components of a typical service that is deployed on multiple clouds. We present the implementation details of our solution as well as experimental results carried out on two commercial clouds
Novel Techniques for Secure Use of Public Cloud Computing Resources
The federal government has an expressed interest in moving data and services to third party service providers in order to take advantage of the flexibility, scalability, and potential cost savings. This approach is called cloud computing. The thesis for this research is that efficient techniques exist to support the secure use of public cloud computing resources by a large, federated enterprise. The primary contributions of this research are the novel cryptographic system MA-AHASBE (Multi-Authority Anonymous Hierarchical Attribute-Set Based Encryption), and the techniques used to incorporate MA-AHASBE in a real world application. Performance results indicate that while there is a cost associated with enforcing the suggested security model, the cost is not unreasonable and the benefits in security can be significant. The contributions of this research give the DoD additional tools for supporting the mission while taking advantage of the cost efficient public cloud computing resources that are becoming widely available
A Lightweight and Flexible Mobile Agent Platform Tailored to Management Applications
Mobile Agents (MAs) represent a distributed computing technology that
promises to address the scalability problems of centralized network management.
A critical issue that will affect the wider adoption of MA paradigm in
management applications is the development of MA Platforms (MAPs) expressly
oriented to distributed management. However, most of available platforms impose
considerable burden on network and system resources and also lack of essential
functionality. In this paper, we discuss the design considerations and
implementation details of a complete MAP research prototype that sufficiently
addresses all the aforementioned issues. Our MAP has been implemented in Java
and tailored for network and systems management applications.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures; Proceedings of the 2006 Conference on Mobile
