Reconstructing Functions on the Sphere from Circular Means
The present thesis considers the problem of reconstructing a function f that is defined on the d-dimensional unit sphere from its mean values along hyperplane sections. In case of the two-dimensional sphere, these plane sections are circles. In many tomographic applications, however, only limited data is available. Therefore, one is interested in the reconstruction of the function f from its mean values with respect to only some subfamily of all hyperplane sections of the sphere. Compared with the full data case, the limited data problem is more challenging and raises several questions. The first one is the injectivity, i.e., can any function be uniquely reconstructed from the available data? Further issues are the stability of the reconstruction, which is closely connected with a description of the range, as well as the demand for actual inversion methods or algorithms.
We provide a detailed coverage and answers of these questions for different families of hyperplane sections of the sphere such as vertical slices, sections with hyperplanes through a common point and also incomplete great circles. Such reconstruction problems arise in various practical applications like Compton camera imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, photoacoustic tomography, Radar imaging or seismic imaging. Furthermore, we apply our findings about spherical means to the cone-beam transform and prove its singular value decomposition.
Artificial Intelligence for Science in Quantum, Atomistic, and Continuum Systems
Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are fueling a new paradigm of
discoveries in natural sciences. Today, AI has started to advance natural
sciences by improving, accelerating, and enabling our understanding of natural
phenomena at a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, giving rise to a new
area of research known as AI for science (AI4Science). Being an emerging
research paradigm, AI4Science is unique in that it is an enormous and highly
interdisciplinary area. Thus, a unified and technical treatment of this field
is needed yet challenging. This work aims to provide a technically thorough
account of a subarea of AI4Science; namely, AI for quantum, atomistic, and
continuum systems. These areas aim at understanding the physical world from the
subatomic (wavefunctions and electron density), atomic (molecules, proteins,
materials, and interactions), to macro (fluids, climate, and subsurface) scales
and form an important subarea of AI4Science. A unique advantage of focusing on
these areas is that they largely share a common set of challenges, thereby
allowing a unified and foundational treatment. A key common challenge is how to
capture physics first principles, especially symmetries, in natural systems by
deep learning methods. We provide an in-depth yet intuitive account of
techniques to achieve equivariance to symmetry transformations. We also discuss
other common technical challenges, including explainability,
out-of-distribution generalization, knowledge transfer with foundation and
large language models, and uncertainty quantification. To facilitate learning
and education, we provide categorized lists of resources that we found to be
useful. We strive to be thorough and unified and hope this initial effort may
trigger more community interests and efforts to further advance AI4Science
Coordinate Independent Convolutional Networks -- Isometry and Gauge Equivariant Convolutions on Riemannian Manifolds
Motivated by the vast success of deep convolutional networks, there is a
great interest in generalizing convolutions to non-Euclidean manifolds. A major
complication in comparison to flat spaces is that it is unclear in which
alignment a convolution kernel should be applied on a manifold. The underlying
reason for this ambiguity is that general manifolds do not come with a
canonical choice of reference frames (gauge). Kernels and features therefore
have to be expressed relative to arbitrary coordinates. We argue that the
particular choice of coordinatization should not affect a network's inference
-- it should be coordinate independent. A simultaneous demand for coordinate
independence and weight sharing is shown to result in a requirement on the
network to be equivariant under local gauge transformations (changes of local
reference frames). The ambiguity of reference frames depends thereby on the
G-structure of the manifold, such that the necessary level of gauge
equivariance is prescribed by the corresponding structure group G. Coordinate
independent convolutions are proven to be equivariant w.r.t. those isometries
that are symmetries of the G-structure. The resulting theory is formulated in a
coordinate free fashion in terms of fiber bundles. To exemplify the design of
coordinate independent convolutions, we implement a convolutional network on
the M\"obius strip. The generality of our differential geometric formulation of
convolutional networks is demonstrated by an extensive literature review which
explains a large number of Euclidean CNNs, spherical CNNs and CNNs on general
surfaces as specific instances of coordinate independent convolutions.Comment: The implementation of orientation independent M\"obius convolutions

Magnetic Proximity Effects in Highly-ordered Transition Metal Oxide Heterosystems studied by Soft X-Ray Photoemission Electron Microscopy
Abstract:
In this thesis, the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) in
highly-ordered transition metal oxide (TMO) heterosystems
composed of single crystals of ferrimagnetic
(FIM) Fe3O4 and thin antiferromagnetic (AF) NiO layers has been
investigated by Photoelectron Emission Microscopy using polarized
soft x-rays (XPEEM). The systems have been prepared in-situ by
Molecular Beam Epitaxy on single crystalline Fe3O4 substrates
polished to various crystallographic surface orientations and
conditioned by Ar sputtering and annealing in O2 background. The
magnetic order was determined by vectorial magnetometry
exploiting XMCD and anisotropic XMLD for single crystalline
systems of cubic symmetry. Two major contributions to the MPE
were identified: First, short-ranged interfacial exchange
interactions create an ultrathin zone of altered magnetic
structure near the interface. Second, long-ranged magnetoelastic
interactions lead to a change of the magnetic structure on a
larger scale, affecting the whole NiO adlayer. The influence of
directional lattice strain on the magnetic order via
magnetoelastic coupling was studied by means of samples with
different crystallographic interface orientations. The strain
appears to affect the AF stacking-directions in NiO as well as
the coupling behaviour at the NiO/Fe3O4 interface. Additionally,
the in-plane bonding anisotropy of the films leads to variations
of the uncompensated magnetization induced in the NiO AF layer
via exchange coupling. It was found, that the uncompensated
magnetization resides directly at the interface, and the bulk of
the NiO layers is compensated. XMCD sum-rule analysis of a NiO
wedge on Fe3O4 (110) revealed extremal values for the Fe and Ni
orbital moments for 1ML, possibly related to the reconstruction
of the interface layer to NiFe2O4. Temperature-dependent
measurements of the XMD contrast reveal lowered critical
temperatures for both NiO and Fe3O4 due to finite size effects
and interfacial coupling. Fits of the theoretically expected
XMLD contrast to profiles of the exchangeinduced AF domain walls
yielded a wall structure consistent with a simple coherent
in-plane rotation model of the NiO spin-axis. In
magnetically-annealed samples, the anisotropy of the
Fe3O4 (110)/NiO interface was found to be altered, leading to
non-crystallographic easy-axes. In a simple picture, the effect
may be explained as a superposition of bulk and interfacial
magnetocrystalline and magnetoelastic anisotropies. A
highly-ordered Fe3O4 (110)/NiO[51Ă…]/Co[15Ă…] trilayer-system was
found to exhibit the same composite anisotropy as mentioned
before, and in addition a possibly roughness-driven perpendicular
interlayer coupling between Co and Fe3O4.Zusammenfassung:
antiferromagnetischen (AF) NiO Schichten mittels
Weichr¨ontgen-Photoemissions-Elektronenmikroskopie
untersucht.
Magnetisierung in NiO.
NiFe2O4. Tempearaturabhängige Messungen des dichroischen
Kontrastes zeigen erniedrigte kritische Temperaturen sowohl fĂĽr
In magnetisch getemperten
Proben wurde eine veränderte Anisotropie der Fe3O4 (110)/NiO
Grenzfläche festgestellt, welche nichtkristallographische
leichte Achsen aufwies. In einem einfachen Modell könnte dieser
Effekt als eine Ăśberlagerung von Volumen- und
Grenzflächenanisotropien magnetokristalliner und
magnetoelastischer Natur angesehen werden. SchlieĂźlich wurde in
einem Fe3O4 (110)/NiO[51Ă…]/Co[15Ă…] Dreifachschichtsystem die
gleiche zuvor erwähnte Gesamtanisotropie gefunden, zusätzlich
jedoch eine möglicherweise rauhigkeitsinduzierte senkrechte
Zwischenschichtkopplung von Cobalt und Fe3O4
Spinful Algorithmization of High Energy Diffraction
High energy diffraction probes fundamental interactions, the vacuum, and quantum mechanically coherent matter waves at asymptotic energies. In this work, we algorithmize our abstract ideas and develop a set of rigid rules for diffraction. To get spin under control, we construct a new Monte Carlo simulation engine, GRANIITTI. It is the first event generator with custom spin-dependent scattering amplitudes for the glueball domain semi-exclusive diffraction, driven by fully multithreaded importance sampling and written in C++. Our simulations provide new computational evidence that the enigmatic glueball filter observable is a spin polarization filter for tensor resonances. For algorithmic spin studies, we automate the classic Laplace spherical harmonics inverse expansion, carefully define the geometric acceptance related phase space issues and study the harmonic mixing properties systematically in different Lorentz frames.
To improve the big picture, we generalize the standard soft diffraction observables and definitions by developing a high dimensional probabilistic framework based on incidence algebras, Combinatorial Superstatistics, and solve also a new superposition inverse problem using the Möbius inversion theorem. For inverting stochastic autoconvolution integral equations or `inverting the proton', we develop a novel recursive inverse algorithm based on the Fast Fourier Transform and relative entropy minimization. The first algorithmic inverse results of the proton double multiplicity structure and multiparton interaction rates are obtained using the published LHC data, in agreement with standard phenomenology. For optimal inversion of the detector efficiency response, we build the first Deep Learning based solution working in higher phase space dimensions, DeepEfficiency, which inverts the detector response on an event-by-event basis and minimizes the event generator dependence.
Using the ALICE experiment proton-proton data at the LHC at 13 TeV, we obtain the first unfolded fiducial measurement of the multidimensional combinatorial partial cross sections, the first multidimensional maximum likelihood fit of the effective soft pomeron intercept and the first multidimensional maximum likelihood fit of the single, double and non-diffractive component cross sections. Great care is taken with the fiducial and non-fiducial definitions. The second topic of measurements centers on semi-exclusive central diffractive production of hadron pairs, which we study with the ALICE data. We measure and fit the resonance spectra of identified pion and kaon pairs, which is crucial on the road towards solving the mysteries of glueballs, the proton structure fluctuations, and the pomeron.
Suurena tavoitteena on kehittää suurenergiadiffraktion kokonaiskuvaa.
Toinen mittausten aihe on keskeisdiffraktio. Työssä mitataan hadroniset resonanssispektrit, joiden tutkiminen vie meidät kohti liimapallojen, protonin fluktuoivan sisärakenteen ja pomeronin salaisuuksien ratkaisuja
