Reverse-engineering of architectural buildings based on an hybrid modeling approach

We thank Tudor Driscu for his help on the English translation.This article presents a set of theoretical reflections and technical demonstrations that constitute a new methodological base for the architectural surveying and representation using computer graphics techniques. The problem we treated relates to three distinct concerns: the surveying of architectural objects, the construction and the semantic enrichment of their geometrical models, and their handling for the extraction of dimensional information. A hybrid approach to 3D reconstruction is described. This new approach combines range-based modeling and image-based modeling techniques; it integrates the concept of architectural feature-based modeling. To develop this concept set up a first process of extraction and formalization of architectural knowledge based on the analysis of architectural treaties is carried on. Then, the identified features are used to produce a template shape library. Finally the problem of the overall model structure and organization is addressed
Past, Present, and Future of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping: Towards the Robust-Perception Age
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)consists in the concurrent
construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the
state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing
progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications,
and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey
the current state of SLAM. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto
standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad
set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric
and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees,
active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously
serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By
looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open
challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific
investigation. The paper also contains the authors' take on two questions that
often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and
Is SLAM solved
A Common Law for the Statutory Era: The Right of Publicity and New York\u27s Right of Privacy Statute
This note compares New York\u27s privacy statute with the common law right of publicity. The article first traces the history of each law, then goes on to compare their effects. The author argues that exploitation of persona warrants judicial recognition of a common law right of publicity in New York, despite the argument that the creation of such a right should be left to the discretion of the legislature
A new framework for sign language recognition based on 3D handshape identification and linguistic modeling
Current approaches to sign recognition by computer generally have at least some of the following limitations: they rely on laboratory
conditions for sign production, are limited to a small vocabulary, rely on 2D modeling (and therefore cannot deal with occlusions
and off-plane rotations), and/or achieve limited success. Here we propose a new framework that (1) provides a new tracking method
less dependent than others on laboratory conditions and able to deal with variations in background and skin regions (such as the
face, forearms, or other hands); (2) allows for identification of 3D hand configurations that are linguistically important in American
Sign Language (ASL); and (3) incorporates statistical information reflecting linguistic constraints in sign production. For purposes of
large-scale computer-based sign language recognition from video, the ability to distinguish hand configurations accurately is critical.
Our current method estimates the 3D hand configuration to distinguish among 77 hand configurations linguistically relevant for
ASL. Constraining the problem in this way makes recognition of 3D hand configuration more tractable and provides the information
specifically needed for sign recognition. Further improvements are obtained by incorporation of statistical information about linguistic
dependencies among handshapes within a sign derived from an annotated corpus of almost 10,000 sign tokens
Atlas-Based Prostate Segmentation Using an Hybrid Registration
Purpose: This paper presents the preliminary results of a semi-automatic
method for prostate segmentation of Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) which aims
to be incorporated in a navigation system for prostate brachytherapy. Methods:
The method is based on the registration of an anatomical atlas computed from a
population of 18 MRI exams onto a patient image. An hybrid registration
framework which couples an intensity-based registration with a robust
point-matching algorithm is used for both atlas building and atlas
registration. Results: The method has been validated on the same dataset that
the one used to construct the atlas using the "leave-one-out method". Results
gives a mean error of 3.39 mm and a standard deviation of 1.95 mm with respect
to expert segmentations. Conclusions: We think that this segmentation tool may
be a very valuable help to the clinician for routine quantitative image

Integrated process of images and acceleration measurements for damage detection
The use of mobile robots and UAV to catch unthinkable images together with on-site global automated acceleration measurements easy achievable by wireless sensors, able of remote data transfer, have strongly enhanced the capability of defect and damage evaluation in bridges. A sequential procedure is, here, proposed for damage monitoring and bridge condition assessment based on both: digital image processing for survey and defect evaluation and structural identification based on acceleration measurements. A steel bridge has been simultaneously inspected by UAV to acquire images using visible light, or infrared radiation, and monitored through a wireless sensor network (WSN) measuring structural vibrations. First, image processing has been used to construct a geometrical model and to quantify corrosion extension. Then, the consistent structural model has been updated based on the modal quantities identified using the acceleration measurements acquired by the deployed WSN. © 2017 The Authors.
