    The Scholar's Dashboard: Creating a multidisciplinary tool via design and build workshops (OhioLINK)

    The Scholar's Dashboard project is a series of three two-day design and build workshops, teaming humanities scholars, librarians, and technologists in innovative application development to optimize use of humanities collections from the OhioLINK Digital Resource Commons (DRC). The DRC is a 500,000 item open access collection from Ohio academic and cultural heritage organizations. Dashboard users will select and combine collections, add descriptions and metadata, and re-visualize and re-present information. DRC collections with relevant information (oral histories, narratives, records, documents, images, e.g.) will form the design base. Design and build workshops allow researchers and scholars to specify features needed to rapidly expand DRC functionality. This model will then be used as a magnet for further digital humanities collections, as scholars, librarians, and archivists contribute collections in order to benefit from the Scholar's Dashboard design and capabilities

    Count-Based Exploration in Feature Space for Reinforcement Learning

    We introduce a new count-based optimistic exploration algorithm for Reinforcement Learning (RL) that is feasible in environments with high-dimensional state-action spaces. The success of RL algorithms in these domains depends crucially on generalisation from limited training experience. Function approximation techniques enable RL agents to generalise in order to estimate the value of unvisited states, but at present few methods enable generalisation regarding uncertainty. This has prevented the combination of scalable RL algorithms with efficient exploration strategies that drive the agent to reduce its uncertainty. We present a new method for computing a generalised state visit-count, which allows the agent to estimate the uncertainty associated with any state. Our \phi-pseudocount achieves generalisation by exploiting same feature representation of the state space that is used for value function approximation. States that have less frequently observed features are deemed more uncertain. The \phi-Exploration-Bonus algorithm rewards the agent for exploring in feature space rather than in the untransformed state space. The method is simpler and less computationally expensive than some previous proposals, and achieves near state-of-the-art results on high-dimensional RL benchmarks.Comment: Conference: Twenty-sixth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI-17), 8 pages, 1 figur

    New Media and Youth Political Action

    To rigorously consider the impact of new media on the political and civic behavior of young people, The MacArthur Research Network on Youth and Participatory Politics (YPP) developed and fielded one of the first large-scale, nationally representative studies of new media and politics among young people. The two principal researchers for the survey component of the YPP, Cathy J. Cohen of the University of Chicago and Joseph Kahne of Mills College, oversaw a research team that surveyed nearly 3,000 respondents between the ages of 15 and 25 years of age. Unlike any prior study of youth and new media, this study included large numbers of black, Latino, and Asian American respondents, which allows for unique and powerful statistical comparisons across race with a focus on young people.Until now there has been limited opportunity and data available to comprehensively explore the relationship between new media and the politics of young people. One of the few entities to engage in this type of rigorous analysis has been the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The YPP study expands on this field-leading work by including an extensive battery of items addressing participatory politics and adequate numbers of participants from different racial and ethnic groups, thus allowing for analysis of how different groups of young people were engaged with new media in the political realm.The YPP study findings suggest that fundamental changes in political expectations and practices may be occurring -- especially for youth. The analysis of the data collected reveals that youth are taking advantage of an expanded set of participatory practices in the political realm in ways that amplify their voice and sometimes their influence, thus increasing the ways young people participate in political life. The YPP researchers label this expanded set of opportunities and actions participatory politics

    Cricket Player Profiling: Unraveling Strengths and Weaknesses Using Text Commentary Data

    Devising player-specific strategies in cricket necessitates a meticulous understanding of each player's unique strengths and weaknesses. Nevertheless, the absence of a definitive computational approach to extract such insights from cricket players poses a significant challenge. This paper seeks to address this gap by establishing computational models designed to extract the rules governing player strengths and weaknesses, thereby facilitating the development of tailored strategies for individual players. The complexity of this endeavor lies in several key areas: the selection of a suitable dataset, the precise definition of strength and weakness rules, the identification of an appropriate learning algorithm, and the validation of the derived rules. To tackle these challenges, we propose the utilization of unstructured data, specifically cricket text commentary, as a valuable resource for constructing comprehensive strength and weakness rules for cricket players. We also introduce computationally feasible definitions for the construction of these rules, and present a dimensionality reduction technique for the rule-building process. In order to showcase the practicality of this approach, we conduct an in-depth analysis of cricket player strengths and weaknesses using a vast corpus of more than one million text commentaries. Furthermore, we validate the constructed rules through two distinct methodologies: intrinsic and extrinsic.     Activity Recognition for Quality Assessment of Batting Shots in Cricket using a Hierarchical Representation

    Quality assessment in cricket is a complex task that is performed by understanding the combination of individual activities a player is able to perform and by assessing how well these activities are performed. We present a framework for inexpensive and accessible, automated recognition of cricketing shots. By means of body-worn inertial measurement units, movements of batsmen are recorded, which are then analysed using a parallelised, hierarchical recognition system that automatically classifies relevant categories of shots as required for assessing batting quality. Our system then generates meaningful visualisations of key performance parameters, including feet positions, attack/defence, and distribution of shots around the ground. These visualisations are the basis for objective skill assessment thereby focusing on specific personal improvement points as identified through our system. We evaluated our framework through a deployment study where 6 players engaged in batting exercises. Based on the recorded movement data we could automatically identify 20 classes of unique batting shot components with an average F1-score greater than 88%. This analysis is the basis for our detailed analysis of our study participants’ skills. Our system has the potential to rival expensive vision-based systems but at a fraction of the cost

    Bowling online : the Internet and the new social capital.

    The decline thesis proponents in the social capital literature have largely ignored the fastest growing venue for new social capital formation – the Internet. We argue that the Internet is making a larger impact than the current research acknowledges. Using survey data from the Pew Internet & American Life Project combined with a survey of college students, we confirm a strong positive relationship between online social networking and political participation. Further, we present evidence that, at least in 2008 election, there was a bias toward voting for Democrats among those who utilized online social networking services including Facebook and Twitter.
