A Personalized System for Conversational Recommendations
Searching for and making decisions about information is becoming increasingly
difficult as the amount of information and number of choices increases.
Recommendation systems help users find items of interest of a particular type,
such as movies or restaurants, but are still somewhat awkward to use. Our
solution is to take advantage of the complementary strengths of personalized
recommendation systems and dialogue systems, creating personalized aides. We
present a system -- the Adaptive Place Advisor -- that treats item selection as
an interactive, conversational process, with the program inquiring about item
attributes and the user responding. Individual, long-term user preferences are
unobtrusively obtained in the course of normal recommendation dialogues and
used to direct future conversations with the same user. We present a novel user
model that influences both item search and the questions asked during a
conversation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system in significantly
reducing the time and number of interactions required to find a satisfactory
item, as compared to a control group of users interacting with a non-adaptive
version of the system
Predictive Entropy Search for Efficient Global Optimization of Black-box Functions
We propose a novel information-theoretic approach for Bayesian optimization
called Predictive Entropy Search (PES). At each iteration, PES selects the next
evaluation point that maximizes the expected information gained with respect to
the global maximum. PES codifies this intractable acquisition function in terms
of the expected reduction in the differential entropy of the predictive
distribution. This reformulation allows PES to obtain approximations that are
both more accurate and efficient than other alternatives such as Entropy Search
(ES). Furthermore, PES can easily perform a fully Bayesian treatment of the
model hyperparameters while ES cannot. We evaluate PES in both synthetic and
real-world applications, including optimization problems in machine learning,
finance, biotechnology, and robotics. We show that the increased accuracy of
PES leads to significant gains in optimization performance

In addition to knowledge, in various domains skills are equally important. Active learning and training are effective forms of education. We present an automated skills training system for a database programming environment that promotes procedural knowledge acquisition
and skills training. The system provides support features such as correction of solutions, feedback and personalised guidance, similar to interactions with a human tutor. Specifically, we address synchronous feedback and guidance based on personalised assessment. Each of these features is automated and includes a level of personalisation and adaptation. IMPROVING THE DEPENDABILITY OF DESTINATION RECOMMENDATIONS USING INFORMATION ON SOCIAL ASPECTS
Prior knowledge of the social aspects of prospective destinations can be very influential in making travel destination decisions, especially in instances where social concerns do exist about specific destinations. In this paper, we describe the implementation of an ontology-enabled Hybrid Destination Recommender System (HDRS) that leverages an ontological description of five specific social attributes of major Nigerian cities, and hybrid architecture of content-based and case-based filtering techniques to generate personalised top-n destination recommendations. An empirical usability test was conducted on the system, which revealed that the dependability of recommendations from Destination Recommender Systems (DRS) could be improved if the semantic representation of social
attributes information of destinations is made a factor in the destination recommendation process
NOUS: Construction and Querying of Dynamic Knowledge Graphs
The ability to construct domain specific knowledge graphs (KG) and perform
question-answering or hypothesis generation is a transformative capability.
Despite their value, automated construction of knowledge graphs remains an
expensive technical challenge that is beyond the reach for most enterprises and
academic institutions. We propose an end-to-end framework for developing custom
knowledge graph driven analytics for arbitrary application domains. The
uniqueness of our system lies A) in its combination of curated KGs along with
knowledge extracted from unstructured text, B) support for advanced trending
and explanatory questions on a dynamic KG, and C) the ability to answer queries

Hermes: an Ontology-Based News Personalization Portal
Nowadays, news feeds provide Web users with access to an unlimited amount of news items, however only a subset of them is relevant. Therefore, users should be able to select the most relevant concepts, about which they want to retrieve news. Although keyword search engines provide users with the ability to filter news items, they lack the power of understanding the domain where the news items reside. The aim of this paper is to propose a solution that provides users with the ability to ask for news items related to specific concepts they are interested in. This is accomplished by creating an ontology, developing a classifying system that populates the ontology by making use of a knowledge base, and providing an innovative graph representation of the ontology to retrieve relevant news items.
