Predictive pole-placement control with linear models
The predictive pole-placement control method introduced in this paper embeds the classical pole-placement state feedback design into a quadratic optimisation-based model-predictive formulation. This provides an alternative to model-predictive controllers which are based on linear–quadratic control. The theoretical properties of the controller in a linear continuous-time setting are presented and a number of illustrative examples are given. These results provide the foundation for novel linear and nonlinear constrained predictive control methods based on continuous-time models

Robust predictive feedback control for constrained systems
A new method for the design of predictive controllers for SISO systems is presented. The proposed technique allows uncertainties and constraints to be concluded in the design of the control law. The goal is to design, at each sample instant, a predictive feedback control law that minimizes a performance measure and guarantees of constraints are satisfied for a set of models that describes the system to be controlled. The predictive controller consists of a finite horizon parametric-optimization problem with an additional constraint over the manipulated variable behavior. This is an end-constraint based approach that ensures the exponential stability of the closed-loop system. The inclusion of this additional constraint, in the on-line optimization algorithm, enables robust stability properties to be demonstrated for the closed-loop system. This is the case even though constraints and disturbances are present. Finally, simulation results are presented using a nonlinear continuous stirred tank reactor model
Model predictive control techniques for hybrid systems
This paper describes the main issues encountered when applying model predictive control to hybrid processes. Hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) is a research field non-fully developed with many open challenges. The paper describes some of the techniques proposed by the research community to overcome the main problems encountered. Issues related to the stability and the solution of the optimization problem are also discussed. The paper ends by describing the results of a benchmark exercise in which several HMPC schemes were applied to a solar air conditioning plant.Ministerio de Eduación y Ciencia DPI2007-66718-C04-01Ministerio de Eduación y Ciencia DPI2008-0581
Robust nonlinear control of vectored thrust aircraft
An interdisciplinary program in robust control for nonlinear systems with applications to a variety of engineering problems is outlined. Major emphasis will be placed on flight control, with both experimental and analytical studies. This program builds on recent new results in control theory for stability, stabilization, robust stability, robust performance, synthesis, and model reduction in a unified framework using Linear Fractional Transformations (LFT's), Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI's), and the structured singular value micron. Most of these new advances have been accomplished by the Caltech controls group independently or in collaboration with researchers in other institutions. These recent results offer a new and remarkably unified framework for all aspects of robust control, but what is particularly important for this program is that they also have important implications for system identification and control of nonlinear systems. This combines well with Caltech's expertise in nonlinear control theory, both in geometric methods and methods for systems with constraints and saturations
Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Constrained Output Path Following
We consider the tracking of geometric paths in output spaces of nonlinear
systems subject to input and state constraints without pre-specified timing
requirements. Such problems are commonly referred to as constrained output
path-following problems. Specifically, we propose a predictive control approach
to constrained path-following problems with and without velocity assignments
and provide sufficient convergence conditions based on terminal regions and end
penalties. Furthermore, we analyze the geometric nature of constrained output
path-following problems and thereby provide insight into the computation of
suitable terminal control laws and terminal regions. We draw upon an example
from robotics to illustrate our findings.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
