    Continuous-time Proportional-Integral Distributed Optimization for Networked Systems

    In this paper we explore the relationship between dual decomposition and the consensus-based method for distributed optimization. The relationship is developed by examining the similarities between the two approaches and their relationship to gradient-based constrained optimization. By formulating each algorithm in continuous-time, it is seen that both approaches use a gradient method for optimization with one using a proportional control term and the other using an integral control term to drive the system to the constraint set. Therefore, a significant contribution of this paper is to combine these methods to develop a continuous-time proportional-integral distributed optimization method. Furthermore, we establish convergence using Lyapunov stability techniques and utilizing properties from the network structure of the multi-agent system.Comment: 23 Pages, submission to Journal of Control and Decision, under review.     Clinical Outcomes Following Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: Minimum 2-Year Follow-up

    BACKGROUD: The longer-term outcomes of revision total knee arthroplasty are not well described in the current literature. Managing patient expectations of revision total knee arthroplasty can be challenging for orthopedic surgeons due to a paucity of data to guide decision-making. We present outcomes of revision total knee arthroplasty performed by a single surgeon over a 12-year period from 2004 through 2015. METHODS: A retrospective review of hospital and private medical records demonstrated 202 revision total knee arthroplasties performed by the senior author in 178 patients from 2004 through 2015. Of these, 153 patients were available for assessment. Patients were contacted and invited to participate in a structured telephone interview to assess Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and patient satisfaction. All patients received the PFC (Depuy) prosthesis at a single institution and were followed up for minimum 2 years postoperatively at the time of review. Retrospective chart review was used to obtain other data for analysis including patient demographics, preoperative and postoperative range of motion (ROM), and intraoperative details. RESULTS: This cohort demonstrated a 93.5% survival rate and an 85% satisfaction rate at a mean of 6.5 years postoperatively. Mean ROM improved from 100° (range, 5°–145°) to 112° (range, 35°–135°) (p < 0.001). The mean OKS was 39.25 (range, 14–48). The factors associated with improved postoperative outcomes included male gender, fewer previous revision total knee arthroplasty procedures, increased preoperative ROM, and receiving a less constrained implant. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a comprehensive description of outcomes following revision total knee arthroplasty in a large patient cohort with a long follow-up. Although revision total knee arthroplasty is a challenging and complex aspect of arthroplasty surgery, high patient satisfaction and good functional outcomes can be achieved for the majority of patients

    DELIBERATION, JUDGEMENT AND THE NATURE OF EVIDENCE

    A normative Bayesian theory of deliberation and judgement requires a procedure for merging the evidence of a collection of agents. In order to provide such a procedure, one needs to ask what the evidence is that grounds Bayesian probabilities. After finding fault with several views on the nature of evidence (the views that evidence is knowledge; that evidence is whatever is fully believed; that evidence is observationally set credence; that evidence is information), it is argued that evidence is whatever is rationally taken for granted. This view is shown to have consequences for an account of merging evidence, and it is argued that standard axioms for merging need to be altered somewhat

    (WP 2014-03) Bounded Rationality and Bounded Individuality

    This paper argues that since the utility function conception of the individual is derived from standard rationality theory, the view that rationality is bounded suggests that individuality should also be seen as bounded. The meaning of this idea is developed in terms of two ways in which individuality can be said to be bounded, with one bound associated with Kahneman and Tversky’s prospect theory and the ‘new’ behavioral economics and a second bound associated with Simon’s evolutionary thinking and the ‘old’ behavioral economics. The paper then shows how different bounded individuality conceptions operate in nudge economics, agent-based modeling, and social identity theory, explaining these conceptions in terms of how they relate to these two behavioral economics views of bounded rationality. How both the ‘new’ and ‘old’ individuality bounds might then be combined in a single account is briefly explored in connection with Kirman’s Marseille fish market analysis

    A Decision Support System for Ship Maintenance Capacity Planning

    In this paper, the basic framework and algorithms of a decision support system are discussed, which enhance process and capacity planning at a large repair shop. The research is strongly motivated by experiences in a project carried out at a dockyard, which performs repair, overhaul and modification programs for various classes of navy ships. We outline the basic requirements placed upon order acceptance, process planning and capacity scheduling for large maintenance projects. In subsequent sections a number of procedures and algorithms to deal with these requirements, in particular a procedure for workload-based capacity planning, a database system to support process planning are developed, as well as a resource-constrained project scheduling system to support work planning at a more detailed level. The system has been designed to support decision making at the Navy Dockyard in particular, however, we believe that, due to its generic structure, it is applicable to a wide range of project-based manufacturing and maintenance environments
