    A Consolidated View of Context for Intelligent Systems

    This paper's main objective is to consolidate the knowledge on context in the realm of intelligent systems, systems that are aware of their context and can adapt their behavior accordingly. We provide an overview and analysis of 36 context models that are heterogeneous and scattered throughout multiple fields of research. In our analysis, we identify five shared context categories: social context, location, time, physical context, and user context. In addition, we compare the context models with the context elements considered in the discourse on intelligent systems and find that the models do not properly represent the identified set of 3,741 unique context elements. As a result, we propose a consolidation of the findings from the 36 context models and the 3,741 unique context elements. The analysis reveals that there is a long tail of context categories that are considered only sporadically in context models. However, particularly these context elements in the long tail may be necessary for improving intelligent systems' context awareness

    Understanding practices in mathematics education : structure and text

    The practices of mathematics education can be investigated at a wide variety of levels: from the actions of individual students or teachers through classroom interactions, school structures, curriculum specifications and materials, teacher development programmes and local, national or international systems of instruction and assessment. These levels are, however, inter-related. The study of a national curriculum gains significance as we see how it impacts upon and is interpreted by teachers and students. The study of an individual’s actions makes more sense when these are interpreted in light of the broader context within which the individual is situated. This article is a version of a plenary lecture presented at the Psychology of Mathematics Education conference in 2009, addressing the conference theme “In Search for Theories in Mathematics Education”. In it, I trace the development of my own search for theories to address my wish to understand practices in the field and suggest some tools from linguistics, critical discourse analysis and social theory that can help to make such connections between the various levels of investigation, illustrating with a range of examples

    A framework to maximise the communicative power of knowledge visualisations

    Knowledge visualisation, in the field of information systems, is both a process and a product, informed by the closely aligned fields of information visualisation and knowledg management. Knowledge visualisation has untapped potential within the purview of knowledge communication. Even so, knowledge visualisations are infrequently deployed due to a lack of evidence-based guidance. To improve this situation, we carried out a systematic literature review to derive a number of “lenses” that can be used to reveal the essential perspectives to feed into the visualisation production process.We propose a conceptual framework which incorporates these lenses to guide producers of knowledge visualisations. This framework uses the different lenses to reveal critical perspectives that need to be considered during the design process. We conclude by demonstrating how this framework could be used to produce an effective knowledge visualisation

    Boundary Objects and their Use in Agile Systems Engineering

    Agile methods are increasingly introduced in automotive companies in the attempt to become more efficient and flexible in the system development. The adoption of agile practices influences communication between stakeholders, but also makes companies rethink the management of artifacts and documentation like requirements, safety compliance documents, and architecture models. Practitioners aim to reduce irrelevant documentation, but face a lack of guidance to determine what artifacts are needed and how they should be managed. This paper presents artifacts, challenges, guidelines, and practices for the continuous management of systems engineering artifacts in automotive based on a theoretical and empirical understanding of the topic. In collaboration with 53 practitioners from six automotive companies, we conducted a design-science study involving interviews, a questionnaire, focus groups, and practical data analysis of a systems engineering tool. The guidelines suggest the distinction between artifacts that are shared among different actors in a company (boundary objects) and those that are used within a team (locally relevant artifacts). We propose an analysis approach to identify boundary objects and three practices to manage systems engineering artifacts in industry

    Affordances of Augmented Reality Systems for Co-Located Collaboration

    This paper aims to identify relevant affordances towards an augmented reality system for organizational practices of co-located collaboration. As augmented reality is a means to visualize and author information, such an artifact could enable intuitive sharing of information. It can be shown that single aspects are reflected in literature, missing so far is a comprehensive description of relevant affordances for such an artifact. The concept of affordances is increasingly used in information research, as it enables to define design principle based on the action goals of the user. Addressing the lack of clear formulation guidelines of affordances, a proposal is presented of how affordances can be formulated to reduce uncertainty and ambiguity. This paper makes two major contributions: (1) it introduces how augmented reality systems can contribute to organizational practices of co-located collaboration and (2) illustrates how affordances can be utilized to derive requirements for such systems from interviews

    Antecedents of success in IS offshoring projects - Proposal for an empirical research study

    The paper presents a research model and a measurement instrument for a research-in-progress study on the antecedents of success in IS offshoring projects. In this empirical-confirmatory study, we intend to analyse the impact of the constructs “offshoring expertise”, “trust in offshore service provider”, “project suitability”, “knowledge transfer”, and “liaison quality” on offshore project success. Constructs and indicators are derived from an extensive literature review. We plan to formulate a structural equation model and to test it using partial least squares (PLS) as an analysis technique. Our research model addresses the paucity of research that quantitatively examines offshoring success
