Cape Breton Island is one of the most beautiful islands in the World. The island itself has a unique geography and is located in Nova Scotia, Canada. This chapter introduces and summarizes the current transportation modes in Cape Breton Island. The transportation modes discussed include air, rail, water, truck, and intermodal modes. A SWOT matrix is applied to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to the different transportation modes in Cape Breton Island. Then, the factors are evaluated and ranked based on pairwise comparisons in analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method, and the best strategies are defined. This research provides a unique and multidisciplinary overview of transportation modes in the region that is necessary for future quantitative investigations. Furthermore, it introduces the steps to analyze transportation modes of other areas and regions

Utilizing qualitative components of risk management as evidence on how university strategies meet QA criteria and standards

Risk management (RM) in higher education is becoming a new paradigm applied to quality assurance (QA) as the appetite for regulatory compliance becomes stronger than the one for accreditation or audit processes. This paper discusses how elements of RM can be embedded within university units to provide QA agencies with evidence of performance from the perspective of how decisions are arrived at. One way of documenting decisions and subsequent actions relating to rationale for actions taken by higher education institutions (HEIs) is through the inclusion of a SWOT analysis into the risk assessment process and linking these into existing institutional evaluative frameworks. Rather than only relying on formulaic results derived from externally or internally determined thresholds to gauge and judge university actions – and hence only focusing on whether these satisfy expectations – the use of SWOT adds a qualitative component that documents how risks and tolerance parameters are identified and then monitored in relation to identified and enacted institutional decisions at the institutional, unit or subunit levels

[EN] Even though knowledge transfer remains the starting point of any career, it is without a doubt that professional success goes beyond the acquisition of sound expert knowledge. In fact, the inevitable challenges of increasing flexibility on the labour market can only be mastered by embracing an interdisciplinary approach when educating future employees to meet the social and environmental standards and demands. In order to pursue a successful engineering career T-shaped engineers need to enter the labour market in order to pave the way to innovation. Based on an online survey among potential industry partners and a follow-up SWOT anaylsis at the faculty, a one-week training course was developed at the department of computing compromising communicative, social, entrepreneurial and innovational aspects – skills that usually go beyond the major classes of the curriculum. The research aims to show how a professionalization of students, being enrolled for a traditional computing degree programme, can make a difference in attaining a successful career and and thus further impact the overall future of employabilityKletzenbauer, P.; Gögele, S. CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) was substituted for GTM (Grammar Translation Method) at higher secondary level in Bangladesh in 2001. This replacement of ELT method was a significant change in the English curriculum. This study aimed to determine that the mismanagement of the change is a prime cause of not getting expected CLT outcomes at higher secondary education in Bangladesh. Having been qualitative in nature, this research used secondary sources of information and interpreted the findings in words to present the reality of CLT in Bangladesh. The major findings were: clarifying possible change to employees through communication, involving employees in the change process, and training them so that they can cope with the change. The study also found that the present CLT situation in Bangladesh is not in a satisfactory level. The result of the study demonstrated that proper change management principles were not followed when introducing CLT into education system. The study presents some suggestions for retrieving the current CLT situations in Bangladesh. Sustained economic growth through co-management by SWOT analysis in Zambia : the case of Mukuni village craft market

    Get PDF
Tourism is a viable economic sector with potential to improve people’s livelihoods particularly in rural areas of the developing world. However, due to ill management, tourism has in most instances failed to generate the expected gains. With a shift in natural resource management to more inclusive bottom-up approaches, co-management - the mutual sharing of power and responsibility among stakeholders of a resource, has emerged as a panacea to problems raised by unsustainable tourism practice. Co-management is predicated on the idea that empowerment of local communities through their involvement in governance of natural resources not only assures them of social and economic gains, but also fosters favourable attitudes towards protection of the environment. Consequently, co-management is viewed as an avenue through which the threefold goal of ecologic, social and economic sustainability of tourism can be attained. Mukuni village with its rich cultural heritage is adjacent to the Victoria Falls in Zambia and an international tourist destination. Mukuni village established a co-management initiative to manage its tourism resources and this study investigates the collaborative structures and practices for sustainable tourism-related resource management in the village. Qualitative research methods employed 32 semi-structured in-depth interviews with stakeholders involved in the co-management initiative. Analysed data and findings are presented in a SWOT-analysis format. The study concludes that collaborative structures and practices for tourism-related resource management in Mukuni are not sustainable as some stakeholders’ interests were found to favour social and economic goals ahead of environmental ones with unfavourable implications for sustainable tourism. Recommendations are that government policy on tourism be amended towards more stringent enforcement of environmental legislation.http//: www.ajhtl.comam2017Tourism Managemen

The integrated framework for analysis of electricity supply chain using an integrated SWOT-fuzzy TOPSIS methodology combined with AHP: The case of Turkey

    Get PDF
a b s t r a c t This paper proposes an integrated framework for analysis of an electricity supply chain using an integrated SWOT-fuzzy TOPSIS methodology combined with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The paper is divided into two main sections. In the first main section, the integrated framework comprising a qualitative framework and a quantitative framework is presented. In the qualitative framework, a general structure and socalled advanced planning framework are developed for an electricity supply chain based on the literature review in supply chain management (SCM). Then, a quantitative Strengths-Weaknesses-OpportunitiesThreats (SWOT) framework is used to formulate a strategy plan based on the elements from the proposed qualitative framework. Since a qualitative SWOT analysis can be insufficient to formulate an action plan, an integrated SWOT-fuzzy TOPSIS methodology combined with AHP is proposed to prioritize the defined SWOT factors and to formulate a strategy plan with top priorities. In the second main section, the integrated framework is illustrated with the case of electricity supply chain in Turkey

Interval-Valued Hesitant Fuzzy Hamacher Synergetic Weighted Aggregation Operators and Their Application to Shale Gas Areas Selection

    Get PDF
We investigate the multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problem concerns on the selection of shale gas areas with interval-valued hesitant fuzzy information. First, some Hamacher operations of interval-valued hesitant fuzzy information are introduced, which generalize and extend the existing ones. Then some interval-valued hesitant fuzzy Hamacher weighted aggregation operators, especially, the interval-valued hesitant fuzzy Hamacher synergetic weighted averaging (IVHFHSWA) operators and their geometric version (IVHFHSWG) operators that weight simultaneously the argument variables themselves and their position orders and thus generalize the ideas of the weighted averaging and the ordered weighted averaging, are proposed. The distinct advantages of these operators are that they can provide more choices for the decision makers and considerably enhance or deteriorate the performance of aggregation. The essential properties of these operators are studied and their specific cases are discussed. Based on the IVHFHSWA operator, we propose a practical approach to shale gas areas selection with interval-valued hesitant fuzzy information. Finally, an illustrative example for selecting the shale gas areas is used to demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed approach and a comparative analysis is performed with other approaches to highlight the distinctive advantages of the proposed operators
