    IMPrECISE: Good-is-good-enough data integration

    IMPrECISE is an XQuery module that adds probabilistic XML functionality to an existing XML DBMS, in our case MonetDB/XQuery. We demonstrate probabilistic XML and data integration functionality of IMPrECISE. The prototype is configurable with domain knowledge such that the amount of uncertainty arising during data integration is reduced to an acceptable level, thus obtaining a "good is good enough" data integration with minimal human effort

    Management of Inconsistencies in Data Integration

    Data integration aims at providing a unified view over data coming from various sources. One of the most challenging tasks for data integration is handling the inconsistencies that appear in the integrated data in an efficient and effective manner. In this chapter, we provide a survey on techniques introduced for handling inconsistencies in data integration, focusing on two groups. The first group contains techniques for computing consistent query answers, and includes mechanisms for the compact representation of repairs, query rewriting, and logic programs. The second group contains techniques focusing on the resolution of inconsistencies. This includes methodologies for computing similarity between atomic values as well as similarity between groups of data, collective techniques, scaling to large datasets, and dealing with uncertainty that is related to inconsistencies

    Introducing Dynamic Behavior in Amalgamated Knowledge Bases

    The problem of integrating knowledge from multiple and heterogeneous sources is a fundamental issue in current information systems. In order to cope with this problem, the concept of mediator has been introduced as a software component providing intermediate services, linking data resources and application programs, and making transparent the heterogeneity of the underlying systems. In designing a mediator architecture, we believe that an important aspect is the definition of a formal framework by which one is able to model integration according to a declarative style. To this purpose, the use of a logical approach seems very promising. Another important aspect is the ability to model both static integration aspects, concerning query execution, and dynamic ones, concerning data updates and their propagation among the various data sources. Unfortunately, as far as we know, no formal proposals for logically modeling mediator architectures both from a static and dynamic point of view have already been developed. In this paper, we extend the framework for amalgamated knowledge bases, presented by Subrahmanian, to deal with dynamic aspects. The language we propose is based on the Active U-Datalog language, and extends it with annotated logic and amalgamation concepts. We model the sources of information and the mediator (also called supervisor) as Active U-Datalog deductive databases, thus modeling queries, transactions, and active rules, interpreted according to the PARK semantics. By using active rules, the system can efficiently perform update propagation among different databases. The result is a logical environment, integrating active and deductive rules, to perform queries and update propagation in an heterogeneous mediated framework.Comment: Other Keywords: Deductive databases; Heterogeneous databases; Active rules; Update

    Exploring Current Practice of Using Technology to Support Collaborative Argumentation in Science Classrooms

    The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how middle school science teachers enact the practice of using technology to support collaborative argumentation in their science classroom. This study employed qualitative case study and drew on data sources of interviews and observations. This study identified two themes. Six teachers regarded scientific argumentation as an important science practice, but five of them integrated this practice into their science class without formally introducing it. All teachers integrated different forms of technology to engage students in scientific argumentation. In this study, the findings suggested there is a need to provide professional development for teachers to learn about scientific argumentation.
