    Considering correlation retarded growth for personalized recommendation in social tagging

    Due to the massive amounts of data, finding social media suited to their need is a challenging issue. To help such users retrieve useful social media content, we propose a new model of personalized recommendation system by using annotating information from relationship among users, tags, and items. However, the frequency of users’ tagging has strong or weak correlation, which affects the dynamic interest mining of users. In this paper, CRGI is proposed to describe the correlation between users and tags or tags and items. Our approach has two phases, in the first phase, we describe the correlation between users, items and tags by CRGI and in the second phase, we build a tag-item weight model and a user-tag preference model on the basis of the first phase. Then we utilize the two models to find the suitable items with the highest scores. The experimental results demonstrate that the item recommendation performance is improved in both the accuracy and the diversity, and validate that the proposed personalized approach is effective for improving the social media recommendation

    Design of an E-learning system using semantic information and cloud computing technologies

    Humanity is currently suffering from many difficult problems that threaten the life and survival of the human race. It is very easy for all mankind to be affected, directly or indirectly, by these problems. Education is a key solution for most of them. In our thesis we tried to make use of current technologies to enhance and ease the learning process. We have designed an e-learning system based on semantic information and cloud computing, in addition to many other technologies that contribute to improving the educational process and raising the level of students. The design was built after much research on useful technology, its types, and examples of actual systems that were previously discussed by other researchers. In addition to the proposed design, an algorithm was implemented to identify topics found in large textual educational resources. It was tested and proved to be efficient against other methods. The algorithm has the ability of extracting the main topics from textual learning resources, linking related resources and generating interactive dynamic knowledge graphs. This algorithm accurately and efficiently accomplishes those tasks even for bigger books. We used Wikipedia Miner, TextRank, and Gensim within our algorithm. Our algorithm‘s accuracy was evaluated against Gensim, largely improving its accuracy. Augmenting the system design with the implemented algorithm will produce many useful services for improving the learning process such as: identifying main topics of big textual learning resources automatically and connecting them to other well defined concepts from Wikipedia, enriching current learning resources with semantic information from external sources, providing student with browsable dynamic interactive knowledge graphs, and making use of learning groups to encourage students to share their learning experiences and feedback with other learners.Programa de Doctorado en Ingeniería Telemática por la Universidad Carlos III de MadridPresidente: Luis Sánchez Fernández.- Secretario: Luis de la Fuente Valentín.- Vocal: Norberto Fernández Garcí

    Development and validation of gold nanoprobes for human SNP detection towards commercial application

    Conventional molecular techniques for detection and characterization of relevant nucleic acid (i.e. DNA) sequences are, nowadays, cumbersome, expensive and with reduced portability. The main objective of this dissertation consisted in the optimization and validation of a fast and low-cost colorimetric nanodiagnostic methodology for the detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). This was done considering SNPs associated to obesity of commercial interest for STAB VIDA, and subsequent evaluation of other clinically relevant targets. Also, integration of this methodology into a microfluidic platform envisaging portability and application on points-of-care (POC) was achieved. To warrant success in pursuing these objectives, the experimental work was divided in four sections: i) genetic association of SNPs to obesity in the Portuguese population; ii) optimization and validation of the non-cross-linking approach for complete genotype characterization of these SNPs; iii) incorporation into a microfluidic platform; and iv) translation to other relevant commercial targets. FTO dbSNP rs#:9939609 carriers had higher body mass index (BMI), total body fat mass, waist perimeter and 2.5 times higher risk to obesity. AuNPs functionalized with thiolated oligonucleotides (Au-nanoprobes) were used via the non-cross-linking to validate a diagnostics approach against the gold standard technique - Sanger Sequencing - with high levels of sensitivity (87.50%) and specificity (91.67%). A proof-of-concept POC microfluidic device was assembled towards incorporation of the molecular detection strategy. In conclusion a successful framework was developed and validated for the detection of SNPs with commercial interest for STAB VIDA, towards future translation into a POC device

    This open access monograph argues established democratic norms for freedom of expression should be implemented on the internet. Moderating policies of tech companies as Facebook, Twitter and Google have resulted in posts being removed on an industrial scale. While this moderation is often encouraged by governments - on the pretext that terrorism, bullying, pornography, “hate speech” and “fake news” will slowly disappear from the internet - it enables tech companies to censure our society. It is the social media companies who define what is blacklisted in their community standards. And given the dominance of social media in our information society, we run the risk of outsourcing the definition of our principles for discussion in the public domain to private companies. Instead of leaving it to social media companies only to take action, the authors argue democratic institutions should take an active role in moderating criminal content on the internet. To make this possible, tech companies should be analyzed whether they are approaching a monopoly. Antitrust legislation should be applied to bring those monopolies within democratic governmental oversight. Despite being in different stages in their lives, Anne Mette is in the startup phase of her research career, while Frederik is one of the most prolific philosophers in Denmark, the authors found each other in their concern about Free Speech on the internet.
