Topology design and performance analysis of an integrated communication network
A research study on the topology design and performance analysis for the Space Station Information System (SSIS) network is conducted. It is begun with a survey of existing research efforts in network topology design. Then a new approach for topology design is presented. It uses an efficient algorithm to generate candidate network designs (consisting of subsets of the set of all network components) in increasing order of their total costs, and checks each design to see if it forms an acceptable network. This technique gives the true cost-optimal network, and is particularly useful when the network has many constraints and not too many components. The algorithm for generating subsets is described in detail, and various aspects of the overall design procedure are discussed. Two more efficient versions of this algorithm (applicable in specific situations) are also given. Next, two important aspects of network performance analysis: network reliability and message delays are discussed. A new model is introduced to study the reliability of a network with dependent failures. For message delays, a collection of formulas from existing research results is given to compute or estimate the delays of messages in a communication network without making the independence assumption. An Efficient Algorithm for Computing Network Reliability in Small Treewidth
We consider the classic problem of Network Reliability. A network is given
together with a source vertex, one or more target vertices, and probabilities
assigned to each of the edges. Each edge appears in the network with its
associated probability and the problem is to determine the probability of
having at least one source-to-target path. This problem is known to be NP-hard.
We present a linear-time fixed-parameter algorithm based on a parameter
called treewidth, which is a measure of tree-likeness of graphs. Network
Reliability was already known to be solvable in polynomial time for bounded
treewidth, but there were no concrete algorithms and the known methods used
complicated structures and were not easy to implement. We provide a
significantly simpler and more intuitive algorithm that is much easier to
implement.
We also report on an implementation of our algorithm and establish the
applicability of our approach by providing experimental results on the graphs
of subway and transit systems of several major cities, such as London and
Tokyo. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first exact algorithm for
Network Reliability that can scale to handle real-world instances of the

Reliability-based economic model predictive control for generalized flow-based networks including actuators' health-aware capabilities
This paper proposes a reliability-based economic model predictive control (MPC) strategy for the management of generalized flow-based networks, integrating some ideas on network service reliability, dynamic safety stock planning, and degradation of equipment health. The proposed strategy is based on a single-layer economic optimisation problem with dynamic constraints, which includes two enhancements with respect to existing approaches. The first enhancement considers chance-constraint programming to compute an optimal inventory replenishment policy based on a desired risk acceptability level, leading to dynamically allocate safety stocks in flow-based networks to satisfy non-stationary flow demands. The second enhancement computes a smart distribution of the control effort and maximises actuators’ availability by estimating their degradation and reliability. System data communication structures for active-control transport aircraft, volume 2
The application of communication structures to advanced transport aircraft are addressed. First, a set of avionic functional requirements is established, and a baseline set of avionics equipment is defined that will meet the requirements. Three alternative configurations for this equipment are then identified that represent the evolution toward more dispersed systems. Candidate communication structures are proposed for each system configuration, and these are compared using trade off analyses; these analyses emphasize reliability but also address complexity. Multiplex buses are recognized as the likely near term choice with mesh networks being desirable for advanced, highly dispersed systems

Reliability and fault tolerance modelling of multiprocessor systems
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Reliability evaluation by analytic modelling constitute an important issue of designing a reliable multiprocessor system. In this thesis, a model for reliability and fault tolerance analysis of the interconnection network is presented, based on graph theory. Reliability and fault tolerance are considered as deterministic and probabilistic measures of connectivity.
Exact techniques for reliability evaluation fail for large multiprocessor systems because of the enormous computational resources required. Therefore, approximation techniques have to be used. Three approaches are proposed, the first by simplifying the symbolic expression of reliability; the
other two by applying a hierarchical decomposition to the system. All these

Robustness surfaces of complex networks
Despite the robustness of complex networks has been extensively studied in
the last decade, there still lacks a unifying framework able to embrace all the
proposed metrics. In the literature there are two open issues related to this
gap: (a) how to dimension several metrics to allow their summation and (b) how
to weight each of the metrics. In this work we propose a solution for the two
aforementioned problems by defining the -value and introducing the concept
of \emph{robustness surface} (). The rationale of our proposal is to
make use of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We firstly adjust to 1 the
initial robustness of a network. Secondly, we find the most informative
robustness metric under a specific failure scenario. Then, we repeat the
process for several percentage of failures and different realizations of the
failure process. Lastly, we join these values to form the robustness surface,
which allows the visual assessment of network robustness variability. Results
show that a network presents different robustness surfaces (i.e., dissimilar
shapes) depending on the failure scenario and the set of metrics. In addition,
the robustness surface allows the robustness of different networks to be

Advanced flight control system study
A fly by wire flight control system architecture designed for high reliability includes spare sensor and computer elements to permit safe dispatch with failed elements, thereby reducing unscheduled maintenance. A methodology capable of demonstrating that the architecture does achieve the predicted performance characteristics consists of a hierarchy of activities ranging from analytical calculations of system reliability and formal methods of software verification to iron bird testing followed by flight evaluation. Interfacing this architecture to the Lockheed S-3A aircraft for flight test is discussed. This testbed vehicle can be expanded to support flight experiments in advanced aerodynamics, electromechanical actuators, secondary power systems, flight management, new displays, and air traffic control concepts
