Improving video QoE with IP over ICN

Information-centric networking (ICN) has long been advocating for radical changes to the Internet, but the upgrade challenges that this entails have hindered its adoption. To break this loop, the POINT project proposed a hybrid, IP-over-ICN, architecture: IP networks are preserved at the edge, connected to each other over an ICN core. This exploits the key benefits of ICN, enabling individual network operators to improve the performance of their IP-based services, without changing the rest of the Internet. This paper first provides an overview of POINT and outlines how it can improve upon IP in terms of performance and resilience. It then describes a trial of the POINT prototype in a production network, where real users operated actual IPbased applications. As part of the trial, we carried out experiments to evaluate the Quality of Experience (QoE) for video services offered via either HLS or IPTV, using either IP or POINT as a substrate. The results from the trial verify that the IP-over-ICN approach of POINT offers enhanced QoE to the users of these video services, compared to traditional IP, especially under exceptional network conditions

So you've got IPv6 address space. Can you defend it?

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the successor of Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4). IPv6 will become the next standard networking protocol on the Internet. It brings with it a great increase in address space, changes to network operations, and new network security concerns. In this thesis we examine IPv6 from a security perspective. The security of IPv6 is important to all protocols that use IPv6 on the Internet. The goal of this thesis is to introduce the reader to existing IPv6 security challenges, demonstrate how IPv6 changes network security and show how IPv6 is being improved.Master i InformatikkMAMN-INFINF39

Architectures of Internet-Based Systems with Multicasting

    Get PDF
With rapid expansion of interest in multimedia and distributed computing applications across the Internet increases importance of optimized delivery of group traffic. According to current situation the best practice to achieve this goal is multicasting. This masters thesis summarizes multicasting methods and facts. Also it draws conclusions from practical application of presented information on commercial project.

Signalling of Point to Multipoint Trees in Metro Ethernet and Core Networks

Diplomityössä tutustuttiin IPTV-kanavien siirtoon Core-verkosta MetroEthernet-verkon asiakasta lähinnä olevalle laidalle. Tavoitteena oli kehittää nopeampi ratkaisu monilähetyspuiden konfigurointiin laitevalmistajan toteuttamilla protokollilla. Nykyinen ratkaisu, jossa käytetään Resource reSerVation Protocol:ia MultiProtocol Label Switching-tunneleiden signaloimiseen, Internet Group Management Protocol Snooping:ia halukkaiden vastaanottajien kartoittamiseen sekä Protocol Independent Multicast-Source Specific Multicast:ia runkoverkon monilähetykseen on liian työläs. This master's thesis studies the distribution of IPTV channels from a core network to the edges of a MetroEthernet network. The goal is to find a faster solution for configuring multicast trees using protocols implemented by vendors. The current solution which uses Resource reSerVation Protocol for signalling MultiProtocol Label Switched tunnels, Internet Group Management Protocol Snooping for mapping receivers and Protocol Independent Multicast-Source Specific Multicast for core multicast creates too much work. The new solutions combine RSVP, point-to-multipoint RSVP, Fast ReRoute and PIM-SSM and they are tested in the TeliaSonera networking laboratory. Based on test results there is not much certainty about many things but it can be said that FRR seems to be working well and it is easy to use. Furthermore, P2MP RSVP seemed promising for the core network with faster convergence times in failure cases than PIM-SSM. However, there are few problems to be solved before the protocol is ready for use in the production network
