On the Control of Microgrids Against Cyber-Attacks: A Review of Methods and Applications
Nowadays, the use of renewable generations, energy storage systems (ESSs) and microgrids (MGs) has been developed due to better controllability of distributed energy resources (DERs) as well as their cost-effective and emission-aware operation. The development of MGs as well as the use of hierarchical control has led to data transmission in the communication platform. As a result, the expansion of communication infrastructure has made MGs as cyber-physical systems (CPSs) vulnerable to cyber-attacks (CAs). Accordingly, prevention, detection and isolation of CAs during proper control of MGs is essential. In this paper, a comprehensive review on the control strategies of microgrids against CAs and its defense mechanisms has been done. The general structure of the paper is as follows: firstly, MGs operational conditions, i.e., the secure or insecure mode of the physical and cyber layers are investigated and the appropriate control to return to a safer mode are presented. Then, the common MGs communication system is described which is generally used for multi-agent systems (MASs). Also, classification of CAs in MGs has been reviewed. Afterwards, a comprehensive survey of available researches in the field of prevention, detection and isolation of CA and MG control against CA are summarized. Finally, future trends in this context are clarified
Collective Decision Dynamics in the Presence of External Drivers
We develop a sequence of models describing information transmission and
decision dynamics for a network of individual agents subject to multiple
sources of influence. Our general framework is set in the context of an
impending natural disaster, where individuals, represented by nodes on the
network, must decide whether or not to evacuate. Sources of influence include a
one-to-many externally driven global broadcast as well as pairwise
interactions, across links in the network, in which agents transmit either
continuous opinions or binary actions. We consider both uniform and variable
threshold rules on the individual opinion as baseline models for
decision-making. Our results indicate that 1) social networks lead to
clustering and cohesive action among individuals, 2) binary information
introduces high temporal variability and stagnation, and 3) information
transmission over the network can either facilitate or hinder action adoption,
depending on the influence of the global broadcast relative to the social
network. Our framework highlights the essential role of local interactions
between agents in predicting collective behavior of the population as a whole.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
How Physicality Enables Trust: A New Era of Trust-Centered Cyberphysical Systems
Multi-agent cyberphysical systems enable new capabilities in efficiency,
resilience, and security. The unique characteristics of these systems prompt a
reevaluation of their security concepts, including their vulnerabilities, and
mechanisms to mitigate these vulnerabilities. This survey paper examines how
advancement in wireless networking, coupled with the sensing and computing in
cyberphysical systems, can foster novel security capabilities. This study
delves into three main themes related to securing multi-agent cyberphysical
systems. First, we discuss the threats that are particularly relevant to
multi-agent cyberphysical systems given the potential lack of trust between
agents. Second, we present prospects for sensing, contextual awareness, and
authentication, enabling the inference and measurement of ``inter-agent trust"
for these systems. Third, we elaborate on the application of quantifiable trust
notions to enable ``resilient coordination," where ``resilient" signifies
sustained functionality amid attacks on multiagent cyberphysical systems. We
refer to the capability of cyberphysical systems to self-organize, and
coordinate to achieve a task as autonomy. This survey unveils the cyberphysical
character of future interconnected systems as a pivotal catalyst for realizing
robust, trust-centered autonomy in tomorrow's world
