    Output average consensus over heterogeneous multi-agent systems via two-level approach

    summary:In this paper, a novel two-level framework was proposed and applied to solve the output average consensus problem over heterogeneous multi-agent systems. This approach is mainly based on the recent technique of system abstraction. For given multi-agent systems, we first constructed their abstractions as the upper level and solved their average consensus problem by leveraging well-known results for single integrators. Then the control protocols for physical agents in the lower level were synthesized in a hierarchical way by embedding the designed law for abstractions into an interface between two levels. In this way, the complexity coming from heterogeneous dynamics of agents is totally decoupled from that of the coordination task and the communication topologies. An example was given to show its effectiveness

    Cooperative control of autonomous connected vehicles from a Networked Control perspective: Theory and experimental validation

    Formation control of autonomous connected vehicles is one of the typical problems addressed in the general context of networked control systems. By leveraging this paradigm, a platoon composed by multiple connected and automated vehicles is represented as one-dimensional network of dynamical agents, in which each agent only uses its neighboring information to locally control its motion, while it aims to achieve certain global coordination with all other agents. Within this theoretical framework, control algorithms are traditionally designed based on an implicit assumption of unlimited bandwidth and perfect communication environments. However, in practice, wireless communication networks, enabling the cooperative driving applications, introduce unavoidable communication impairments such as transmission delay and packet losses that strongly affect the performances of cooperative driving. Moreover, in addition to this problem, wireless communication networks can suffer different security threats. The challenge in the control field is hence to design cooperative control algorithms that are robust to communication impairments and resilient to cyber attacks. The work aim is to tackle and solve these challenges by proposing different properly designed control strategies. They are validated both in analytical, numerical and experimental ways. Obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the strategies in coping with communication impairments and security vulnerabilities

    Event-Triggered Consensus and Formation Control in Multi-Agent Coordination

    The focus of this thesis is to study distributed event-triggered control for multi-agent systems (MASs) facing constraints in practical applications. We consider several problems in the field, ranging from event-triggered consensus with information quantization, event-triggered edge agreement under synchronized/unsynchronized clocks, event-triggered leader-follower consensus with Euler-Lagrange agent dynamics and cooperative event-triggered rigid formation control. The first topic is named as event-triggered consensus with quantized relative state measurements. In this topic, we develop two event-triggered controllers with quantized relative state measurements to achieve consensus for an undirected network where each agent is modelled by single integrator dynamics. Both uniform and logarithmic quantizers are considered, which, together with two different controllers, yield four cases of study in this topic. The quantized information is used to update the control input as well as to determine the next trigger event. We show that approximate consensus can be achieved by the proposed algorithms and Zeno behaviour can be completely excluded if constant offsets with some computable lower bounds are added to the trigger conditions. The second topic considers event-triggered edge agreement problems. Two cases, namely the synchronized clock case and the unsynchronized clock case, are studied. In the synchronized clock case, all agents are activated simultaneously to measure the relative state information over edge links under a global clock. Edge events are defined and their occurrences trigger the update of control inputs for the two agents sharing the link. We show that average consensus can be achieved with our proposed algorithm. In the unsynchronized clock case, each agent executes control algorithms under its own clock which is not synchronized with other agents' clocks. An edge event only triggers control input update for an individual agent. It is shown that all agents will reach consensus in a totally asynchronous manner. In the third topic, we propose three different distributed event-triggered control algorithms to achieve leader-follower consensus for a network of Euler-Lagrange agents. We firstly propose two model-independent algorithms for a subclass of Euler-Lagrange agents without the vector of gravitational potential forces. A variable-gain algorithm is employed when the sensing graph is undirected; algorithm parameters are selected in a fully distributed manner with much greater flexibility compared to all previous work concerning event-triggered consensus problems. When the sensing graph is directed, a constant-gain algorithm is employed. The control gains must be centrally designed to exceed several lower bounding inequalities which require limited knowledge of bounds on the matrices describing the agent dynamics, bounds on network topology information and bounds on the initial conditions. When the Euler-Lagrange agents have dynamics which include the vector of gravitational potential forces, an adaptive algorithm is proposed. This requires more information about the agent dynamics but allows for the estimation of uncertain agent parameters. The last topic discusses cooperative stabilization control of rigid formations via an event-triggered approach. We first design a centralized event-triggered formation control system, in which a central event controller determines the next triggering time and broadcasts the event signal to all the agents for control input update. We then build on this approach to propose a distributed event control strategy, in which each agent can use its local event trigger and local information to update the control input at its own event time. For both cases, the trigger condition, event function and trigger behaviour are discussed in detail, and the exponential convergence of the formation system is guaranteed

    Cooperative Control and Fault Recovery for Network of Heterogeneous Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

    The purpose of this thesis is to develop cooperative recovery control schemes for a team of heterogeneous autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). The objective is to have the network of autonomous underwater vehicles follow a desired trajectory while agents maintain a desired formation. It is assumed that the model parameters associated with each vehicle is different although the order of the vehicles are the same. Three cooperative control schemes based on dynamic surface control (DSC) technique are developed. First, a DSC-based centralized scheme is presented in which there is a central controller that has access to information of all agents at the same time and designs the optimal solution for this cooperative problem. This scheme is used as a benchmark to evaluate the performance of other schemes developed in this thesis. Second, a DSC-based decentralized scheme is presented in which each agent designs its controller based on only its information and the information of its desired trajectory. In this scheme, there is no information exchange among the agents in the team. This scheme is also developed for the purpose of comparative studies. Third, two different semi-decentralized or distributed schemes for the network of heterogeneous autonomous underwater vehicles are proposed. These schemes are a synthesis of a consensus-based algorithm and the dynamic surface control technique with the difference that in one of them the desired trajectories of agents are used in the consensus algorithm while in the other the actual states of the agents are used. In the former scheme, the agents communicate their desired relative distances with the agents within their set of nearest neighbors and each agent determines its own control trajectory. In this semi-decentralized scheme, the velocity measurements of the virtual leader and all the followers are not required to reach the consensus formation. However, in the latter, agents communicate their relative distances and velocities with the agents within their set of nearest neighbors. In both semi-decentralized schemes only a subset of agents has access to information of a virtual leader. The comparative studies between these two semi-decentralized schemes are provided which show the superiority of the former semi-decentralized scheme over latter. Furthermore, to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed DSC-based semi-decentralized scheme with consensus algorithm using desired trajectories, a comparative study is performed between this scheme and three cooperative schemes of model-dependent coordinated tracking algorithm, namely the centralized, decentralized, and semi-decentralized schemes. Given that the dynamics of autonomous underwater vehicles are inevitably subjected to system faults, and in particular the actuator faults, to improve the performance of the network of agents, active fault-tolerant control strategies corresponding to the three developed schemes are also designed to recover the team from the loss-of-effectiveness in the actuators and to ensure that the closed-loop signals remain bounded and the team of heterogeneous autonomous underwater vehicles satisfy the overall design specifications and requirements. The results of this research can potentially be used in various marine applications such as underwater oil and gas pipeline inspection and repairing, monitoring oil and gas pipelines, detecting and preventing any oil and gas leakages. However, the applications of the proposed cooperative control and its fault-tolerant scheme are not limited to underwater formation path-tracking and can be applied to any other multi-vehicle systems that are characterized by Euler–Lagrange equations
