    Polynomial iterative algorithms for coloring and analyzing random graphs

    We study the graph coloring problem over random graphs of finite average connectivity cc. Given a number qq of available colors, we find that graphs with low connectivity admit almost always a proper coloring whereas graphs with high connectivity are uncolorable. Depending on qq, we find the precise value of the critical average connectivity cqc_q. Moreover, we show that below cqc_q there exist a clustering phase c[cd,cq]c\in [c_d,c_q] in which ground states spontaneously divide into an exponential number of clusters. Furthermore, we extended our considerations to the case of single instances showing consistent results. This lead us to propose a new algorithm able to color in polynomial time random graphs in the hard but colorable region, i.e when c[cd,cq]c\in [c_d,c_q].Comment: 23 pages, 10 eps figure

    Not Always Sparse: Flooding Time in Partially Connected Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

    In this paper we study mobile ad hoc wireless networks using the notion of evolving connectivity graphs. In such systems, the connectivity changes over time due to the intermittent contacts of mobile terminals. In particular, we are interested in studying the expected flooding time when full connectivity cannot be ensured at each point in time. Even in this case, due to finite contact times durations, connected components may appear in the connectivity graph. Hence, this represents the intermediate case between extreme cases of fully mobile ad hoc networks and fully static ad hoc networks. By using a generalization of edge-Markovian graphs, we extend the existing models based on sparse scenarios to this intermediate case and calculate the expected flooding time. We also propose bounds that have reduced computational complexity. Finally, numerical results validate our models

    Faster Algorithms for Computing Maximal 2-Connected Subgraphs in Sparse Directed Graphs

    Connectivity related concepts are of fundamental interest in graph theory. The area has received extensive attention over four decades, but many problems remain unsolved, especially for directed graphs. A directed graph is 2-edge-connected (resp., 2-vertex-connected) if the removal of any edge (resp., vertex) leaves the graph strongly connected. In this paper we present improved algorithms for computing the maximal 2-edge- and 2-vertex-connected subgraphs of a given directed graph. These problems were first studied more than 35 years ago, with O~(mn)\widetilde{O}(mn) time algorithms for graphs with m edges and n vertices being known since the late 1980s. In contrast, the same problems for undirected graphs are known to be solvable in linear time. Henzinger et al. [ICALP 2015] recently introduced O(n2)O(n^2) time algorithms for the directed case, thus improving the running times for dense graphs. Our new algorithms run in time O(m3/2)O(m^{3/2}), which further improves the running times for sparse graphs. The notion of 2-connectivity naturally generalizes to k-connectivity for k>2k>2. For constant values of k, we extend one of our algorithms to compute the maximal k-edge-connected in time O(m3/2logn)O(m^{3/2} \log{n}), improving again for sparse graphs the best known algorithm by Henzinger et al.     Recognizing Planar Laman Graphs

    Laman graphs are the minimally rigid graphs in the plane. We present two algorithms for recognizing planar Laman graphs. A simple algorithm with running time O(n^(3/2)) and a more complicated algorithm with running time O(n log^3 n) based on involved planar network flow algorithms. Both improve upon the previously fastest algorithm for general graphs by Gabow and Westermann [Algorithmica, 7(5-6):465 - 497, 1992] with running time O(n sqrt{n log n}). To solve this problem we introduce two algorithms (with the running times stated above) that check whether for a directed planar graph G, disjoint sets S, T subseteq V(G), and a fixed k the following connectivity condition holds: for each vertex s in S there are k directed paths from s to T pairwise having only vertex s in common.     Connectivity Oracles for Graphs Subject to Vertex Failures

    We introduce new data structures for answering connectivity queries in graphs subject to batched vertex failures. A deterministic structure processes a batch of ddd\leq d_{\star} failed vertices in O~(d3)\tilde{O}(d^3) time and thereafter answers connectivity queries in O(d)O(d) time. It occupies space O(dmlogn)O(d_{\star} m\log n). We develop a randomized Monte Carlo version of our data structure with update time O~(d2)\tilde{O}(d^2), query time O(d)O(d), and space O~(m)\tilde{O}(m) for any failure bound dnd\le n. This is the first connectivity oracle for general graphs that can efficiently deal with an unbounded number of vertex failures. We also develop a more efficient Monte Carlo edge-failure connectivity oracle. Using space O(nlog2n)O(n\log^2 n), dd edge failures are processed in O(dlogdloglogn)O(d\log d\log\log n) time and thereafter, connectivity queries are answered in O(loglogn)O(\log\log n) time, which are correct w.h.p. Our data structures are based on a new decomposition theorem for an undirected graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E), which is of independent interest. It states that for any terminal set UVU\subseteq V we can remove a set BB of U/(s2)|U|/(s-2) vertices such that the remaining graph contains a Steiner forest for UBU-B with maximum degree ss

    The Price of Connectivity for Vertex Cover

    The vertex cover number of a graph is the minimum number of vertices that are needed to cover all edges. When those vertices are further required to induce a connected subgraph, the corresponding number is called the connected vertex cover number, and is always greater or equal to the vertex cover number. Connected vertex covers are found in many applications, and the relationship between those two graph invariants is therefore a natural question to investigate. For that purpose, we introduce the {\em Price of Connectivity}, defined as the ratio between the two vertex cover numbers. We prove that the price of connectivity is at most 2 for arbitrary graphs. We further consider graph classes in which the price of connectivity of every induced subgraph is bounded by some real number tt. We obtain forbidden induced subgraph characterizations for every real value t3/2t \leq 3/2. We also investigate critical graphs for this property, namely, graphs whose price of connectivity is strictly greater than that of any proper induced subgraph. Those are the only graphs that can appear in a forbidden subgraph characterization for the hereditary property of having a price of connectivity at most tt. In particular, we completely characterize the critical graphs that are also chordal. Finally, we also consider the question of computing the price of connectivity of a given graph. Unsurprisingly, the decision version of this question is NP-hard. In fact, we show that it is even complete for the class Θ2P=PNP[log]\Theta_2^P = P^{NP[\log]}, the class of decision problems that can be solved in polynomial time, provided we can make O(logn)O(\log n) queries to an NP-oracle.
