    Statistical multiplexing and connection admission control in ATM networks

    Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology is widely employed for the transport of network traffic, and has the potential to be the base technology for the next generation of global communications. Connection Admission Control (CAC) is the effective traffic control mechanism which is necessary in ATM networks in order to avoid possible congestion at each network node and to achieve the Quality-of-Service (QoS) requested by each connection. CAC determines whether or not the network should accept a new connection. A new connection will only be accepted if the network has sufficient resources to meet its QoS requirements without affecting the QoS commitments already made by the network for existing connections.     A review of connection admission control algorithms for ATM networks

    The emergence of high-speed networks such as those with ATM integrates large numbers of services with a wide range of characteristics. Admission control is a prime instrument for controlling congestion in the network. As part of connection services to an ATM system, the Connection Admission Control (CAC) algorithm decides if another call or connection can be admitted to the Broadband Network. The main task of the CAC is to ensure that the broadband resources will not saturate or overflow within a very small probability. It limits the connections and guarantees Quality of Service for the new connection. The algorithm for connection admission is crucial in determining bandwidth utilisation efficiency. With statistical multiplexing more calls can be allocated on a network link, while still maintaining the Quality of Service specified by the connection with traffic parameters and type of service. A number of algorithms for admission control for Broadband Services with ATM Networks are described and compared for performance under different traffic loads. There is a general description of the ATM Network as an introduction. Issues to do with source distributions and traffic models are explored in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 provides an extensive presentation of the CAC algorithms for ATM Broadband Networks. The ideas about the Effective Bandwidth are reviewed in Chapter 4, and a different approach to admission control using online measurement is presented in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 has the numerical evaluation of four of the key algorithms, with simulations. Finally Chapter 7 has conclusions of the findings and explores some possibilities for further work

    Multiclass scheduling algorithms for the DAVID metro network

    Abstract—The data and voice integration over dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DAVID) project proposes a metro network architecture based on several wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) rings interconnected via a bufferless optical switch called Hub. The Hub provides a programmable interconnection among rings on the basis of the outcome of a scheduling algorithm. Nodes connected to rings groom traffic from Internet protocol routers and Ethernet switches and share ring resources. In this paper, we address the problem of designing efficient centralized scheduling algorithms for supporting multiclass traffic services in the DAVID metro network. Two traffic classes are considered: a best-effort class, and a high-priority class with bandwidth guarantees. We define the multiclass scheduling problem at the Hub considering two different node architectures: a simpler one that relies on a complete separation between transmission and reception resources (i.e., WDM channels) and a more complex one in which nodes fully share transmission and reception channels using an erasure stage to drop received packets, thereby allowing wavelength reuse. We propose both optimum and heuristic solutions, and evaluate their performance by simulation, showing that heuristic solutions exhibit a behavior very close to the optimum solution.     An integrated bandwidth allocation and admission control framework for the support of heterogeneous real-time traffic in class-based IP networks

    The support of real-time traffic in class-based IP networks requires the reservation of resources in all the links along the end-to-end paths through appropriate queuing and forwarding mechanisms. This resource allocation should be accompanied by appropriate admission control procedures in order to guarantee that newly admitted real-time traffic flows do not cause any violation to the Quality of Service (QoS) experienced by the already established real-time traffic flows. In this paper we initially aim to highlight certain issues with respect to the areas of bandwidth allocation and admission control for the support of real-time traffic in class-based IP networks. We investigate the implications of topological placement of both the bandwidth allocation and admission control schemes. We show that the performance of bandwidth allocation and admission control schemes depends highly on the location of the employed procedures with respect to the end-users requesting the services and the various network boundaries (access, metro, core, etc.). Based on our results we conclude that the strategies for applying these schemes should be location-aware, because the performance of bandwidth allocation and admission control at different points in a class-based IP network, and for the same traffic load, can be quite different and can deviate greatly from the expected performance. Through simulations we also try to provide a quantitative view of the aforementioned deviations. Taking the implications of this “location-awareness” into account, we subsequently present a new Measurement-based Admission Control (MBAC) scheme for real-time traffic that uses measurements of aggregate bandwidth only, without keeping the state of any per-flow information. In this scheme there is no assumption made on the nature of the traffic characteristics of the real-time traffic flows, which can be of heterogeneous nature. Through simulations we show that the admission control scheme is robust with respect to traffic heterogeneity and measurement errors. We also show that our scheme compares favorably against other admission control schemes in the literature

    Providing guaranteed QoS in the hose-modeled VPN

    With the development of the Internet, Internet service providers (ISPs) are required to offer revenue-generating and value-added services instead of only providing bandwidth and access services. Virtual Private Network (VPN) is one of the most important value-added services for ISPs. The classical VPN service is provided by implementing layer 2 technologies, either Frame Relay (FR) or Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). With FR or ATM, virtual circuits are created before data delivery. Since the bandwidth and buffers are reserved, the QoS requirements can be naturally guaranteed. In the past few years, layer 3 VPN technologies are widely deployed due to the desirable performance in terms of flexibility, scalability and simplicity. Layer 3 VPNs are built upon IP tunnels, e.g., by using PPTP, L2TP or IPSec. Since IP is best-of-effort in nature, the QoS requirement cannot be guaranteed in layer 3 VPNs. Actually, layer 3 VPN service can only provide secure connectivity, i.e., protecting and authenticating IP packets between gateways or hosts in a VPN. Without doubt, with more applications on voice, audio and video being used in the Internet, the provision of QoS is one of the most important parts of the emerging services provided by ISPs. An intriguing question is: Is it possible to obtain the best of both layer 2 and 3 VPN? Is it possible to provide guaranteed or predictable QoS, as in layer 2 VPNs, while maintaining the flexibility and simplicity in layer 3 VPN? This question is the starting point of this study. The recently proposed hose model for VPN possesses desirable properties in terms of flexibility, scalability and multiplexing gain. However, the classic fair bandwidth allocation schemes and weighted fair queuing schemes raise the issue of low overall utilization in this model. A new fluid model for provider-provisioned virtual private network (PPVPN) is proposed in this dissertation. Based on the proposed model, an idealized fluid bandwidth allocation scheme is developed. This scheme is proven, analytically, to have the following properties: 1) maximize the overall throughput of the VPN without compromising fairness; 2) provide a mechanism that enables the VPN customers to allocate the bandwidth according to their requirements by assigning different weights to different hose flows, and thus obtain the predictable QoS performance; and 3) improve the overall throughput of the ISPs\u27 network. To approximate the idealized fluid scheme in the real world, the 2-dimensional deficit round robin (2-D DRR and 2-D DRR+) schemes are proposed. The integration of the proposed schemes with the best-effort traffic within the framework of virtual-router-based VPN is also investigated. The 2-D DRR and 2-D DER-+ schemes can be extended to multi-dimensional schemes to be employed in those applications which require a hierarchical scheduling architecture. To enhance the scalability, a more scalable non-per-flow-based scheme for output queued switches is developed as well, and the integration of this scheme within the framework of the MPLS VPN and applications for multicasting traffics is discussed.     Dynamic bandwidth allocation in ATM networks
