    Towards a new methodology for design, modelling, and verification of reconfigurable distributed control systems based on a new extension to the IEC 61499 standard

    In order to meet user requirements and system environment changes, reconfigurable control systems must dynamically adapt their structure and behaviour without disrupting system operation. IEC 61499 standard provides limited support for the design and verification of such systems. In fact, handling different reconfiguration scenarios at runtime is difficult since function blocks in IEC 61499 cannot be changed at run-time. Hence, this thesis promotes an IEC 61499 extension called reconfigurable function block (RFB) that increases design readability and smoothly switches to the most appropriate behaviour when a reconfiguration event occurs. To ensure system feasibility after reconfiguration, in addition to the qualitative verification, quantitative verification based on probabilistic model checking is addressed in a new RFBA approach. The latter aims to transform the designed RFB model automatically into a generalised reconfigurable timed net condition/event system model (GRTNCES) using a newly developed environment called RFBTool. The GR-TNCES fits well with RFB and preserves its semantic. Using the probabilistic model checker PRISM, the generated GR-TNCES model is checked using defined properties specified in computation tree logic. As a result, an evaluation of system performance and an estimation of reconfiguration risks are obtained. The RFBA methodology is applied on a distributed power system case study.Dynamische Anforderungen und Umgebungen erfordern rekonfigurierbare Anlagen und Steuerungssysteme. Rekonfiguration ermöglicht es einem System, seine Struktur und sein Verhalten an interne oder externe Änderungen anzupassen. Die Norm IEC 61499 wurde entwickelt, um (verteilte) Steuerungssysteme auf Basis von Funktionsbausteinen zu entwickeln. Sie bietet jedoch wenig Unterstützung für Entwurf und Verifikation. Die Tatsache, dass eine Rekonfiguration das System-Ausführungsmodell verändert, erschwert die Entwicklung in IEC 61499 zusätzlich. Daher schlägt diese Dissertation rekonfigurierbare Funktionsbausteine (RFBs) als Erweiterung der Norm vor. Ein RFB verarbeitet über einen Master-Slave-Automaten Rekonfigurationsereignisse und löst das entsprechende Verhalten aus. Diese Hierarchie trennt das Rekonfigurationsmodell vom Steuerungsmodell und vereinfacht so den Entwurf. Die Funktionalität des Entwurfs muss verifiziert werden, damit die Ausführbarkeit des Systems nach einer Rekonfiguration gewährleistet ist. Hierzu wird das entworfene RFB-Modell automatisch in ein generalised reconfigurable timed net condition/event system übersetzt. Dieses wird mit dem Model-Checker PRISM auf qualitative und quantitative Eigenschaften überprüft. Somit wird eine Bewertung der Systemperformanz und eine Einschätzung der Rekonfigurationsrisiken erreicht. Die RFB-Methodik wurde in einem Softwarewerkzeug umgesetzt und in einer Fallstudie auf ein dezentrales Stromnetz angewendet

    Modeling and Simulation of Manufacturing Processes and Systems: Overview of Tools, Challenges, and Future Opportunities

    Manufacturing is an important part of the modern economy. It is characterized by complexity in terms of systems, approaches, and interactions with intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Numerous efforts have been developed to use modeling and simulation tools to improve manufacturing efficiency and productivity and to achieve maximum quality, especially with the different mutations in the factories of today. This paper reviews the conventional and modern tools used in manufacturing system design and production improvement. Challenges that need to be addressed by the simulation community are discussed in depth. Finally, the evolution, advances, current practices, and future opportunities are discussed in the context of the contemporary manufacturing industry

    Reliable Industrial IoT-Based Distributed Automation

    Reconfigurable manufacturing systems supported by Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) are modular and easily integrable, promoting efficient system/component reconfigurations with minimal downtime. Industrial systems are commonly based on sequential controllers described with Control Interpreted Petri Nets (CIPNs). Existing design methodologies to distribute centralized automation/control tasks focus on maintaining functional properties of the system during the process, while disregarding failures that may occur during execution (e. g., communication packet drops, sensing or actuation failures). Consequently, in this work, we provide a missing link for reliable IIoT-based distributed automation. We introduce a method to transform distributed control models based on CIPNs into Stochastic Reward Nets that enable integration of realistic fault models (e. g., probabilistic link models). We show how to specify desired system properties to enable verification under the adopted communication/fault models, both at design-and run-time; we also show feasibility of runtime verification on the edge, with a continuously updated system model. Our approach is used on real industrial systems, resulting in modifications of local controllers to guarantee reliable system operation in realistic IIoT environments

    Using Component-based Software Synthesis and Constraint Solving to generate Sets of Manufacturing Simulation Models

    There is a high degree of flexibility in the design of production systems when it comes to the selection and configuration of machines. Simulation supports this complex decision process. However, modeling various configurations in a simulation environment is very time-consuming. We present a framework that includes component-based software synthesis to generate the set of all possible simulation models for the respective planning case. From the set, feasible solutions for a simulation study are then selected using constraint solving methods. We evaluate our approach using a practical example from sheet metal production

    Ontology-Based Production Simulation with OntologySim

    Imagine the possibility to save a simulation at any time, modify or analyze it, and restart again with exactly the same state. The conceptualization and its concrete manifestation in the implementation OntologySim is demonstrated in this paper. The presented approach of a fully ontology-based simulation can solve current challenges in modeling and simulation in production science. Due to the individualization and customization of products and the resulting increase in complexity of production, a need for flexibly adaptable simulations arises. This need is exemplified in the trend towards Digital Twins and Digital Shadows. Their application to production systems, against the background of an ever increasing speed of change in such systems, is arduous. Moreover, missing understandability and human interpretability of current approaches hinders successful, goal oriented applications. The OntologySim can help solving this challenge by providing the ability to generate truly cyber physical systems, both interlocked with reality and providing a simulation framework.     Model-Based Engineering of Collaborative Embedded Systems

    This Open Access book presents the results of the "Collaborative Embedded Systems" (CrESt) project, aimed at adapting and complementing the methodology underlying modeling techniques developed to cope with the challenges of the dynamic structures of collaborative embedded systems (CESs) based on the SPES development methodology. In order to manage the high complexity of the individual systems and the dynamically formed interaction structures at runtime, advanced and powerful development methods are required that extend the current state of the art in the development of embedded systems and cyber-physical systems. The methodological contributions of the project support the effective and efficient development of CESs in dynamic and uncertain contexts, with special emphasis on the reliability and variability of individual systems and the creation of networks of such systems at runtime. The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and the case studies are therefore selected from areas that are highly relevant for Germany’s economy (automotive, industrial production, power generation, and robotics). It also supports the digitalization of complex and transformable industrial plants in the context of the German government's "Industry 4.0" initiative, and the project results provide a solid foundation for implementing the German government's high-tech strategy "Innovations for Germany" in the coming years
