    Market fields structure & dynamics in industrial automation

    There is a research tradition in the economics of standards which addresses standards wars, antitrust concerns or positive externalities from standards. Recent research has also dealt with the process characteristics of standardisation, de facto standard-setting consortia and intellectual property concerns in the technology specification or implementation phase. Nonetheless, there are no studies which analyse capabilities, comparative industry dynamics or incentive structures sufficiently in the context of standard-setting. In my study, I address the characteristics of collaborative research and standard-setting as a new mode of deploying assets beyond motivations well-known from R&D consortia or market alliances. On the basis of a case study of a leading user organisation in the market for industrial automation technology, but also a descriptive network analysis of cross-community affiliations, I demonstrate that there must be a paradoxical relationship between cooperation and competition. More precisely, I explain how there can be a dual relationship between value creation and value capture respecting exploration and exploitation. My case study emphasises the dynamics between knowledge stocks (knowledge alignment, narrowing and deepening) produced by collaborative standard setting and innovation; it also sheds light on an evolutional relationship between the exploration of assets and use cases and each firm's exploitation activities in the market. I derive standard-setting capabilities from an empirical analysis of membership structures, policies and incumbent firm characteristics in selected, but leading, user organisations. The results are as follows: the market for industrial automation technology is characterised by collaboration on standards, high technology influences of other industries and network effects on standards. Further, system integrators play a decisive role in value creation in the customer-specific business case. Standard-setting activities appear to be loosely coupled to the products offered on the market. Core leaders in world standards in industrial automation own a variety of assets and they are affiliated to many standard-setting communities rather than exclusively committed to a few standards. Furthermore, their R&D ratios outperform those of peripheral members and experience in standard-setting processes can be assumed. Standard-setting communities specify common core concepts as the basis for the development of each member's proprietary products, complementary technologies and industrial services. From a knowledge-based perspective, the targeted disclosure of certain knowledge can be used to achieve high innovation returns through systemic products which add proprietary features to open standards. Finally, the interplay between exploitation and exploration respecting the deployment of standard-setting capabilities linked to cooperative, pre-competitive processes leads to an evolution in common technology owned and exploited by the standard-setting community as a particular kind of innovation ecosystem. --standard-setting,innovation,industry dynamics and context,industrial automation

    ENCOMPASS: A SAGA based environment for the compositon of programs and specifications, appendix A

    ENCOMPASS is an example integrated software engineering environment being constructed by the SAGA project. ENCOMPASS supports the specification, design, construction and maintenance of efficient, validated, and verified programs in a modular programming language. The life cycle paradigm, schema of software configurations, and hierarchical library structure used by ENCOMPASS is presented. In ENCOMPASS, the software life cycle is viewed as a sequence of developments, each of which reuses components from the previous ones. Each development proceeds through the phases planning, requirements definition, validation, design, implementation, and system integration. The components in a software system are modeled as entities which have relationships between them. An entity may have different versions and different views of the same project are allowed. The simple entities supported by ENCOMPASS may be combined into modules which may be collected into projects. ENCOMPASS supports multiple programmers and projects using a hierarchical library system containing a workspace for each programmer; a project library for each project, and a global library common to all projects

    This article describes basic information about future of manufacturing systems. In the introductory section there are described trends that will create future concept of manufacturing systems. These trends are also described. Currently existing, advanced software solutions allow to faster accurate data and information exchange, facilitate planning and monitoring during manufacturing processes. The article provides also problems of current manufacturing lines via core characteristics of reconfigurability and their application to particular problems of designing and optimization of manufacturing configuration.     software product lines in value based software engineering

    Objective: Evaluate the value of a product line in terms of maintainability, extensibility and configurability with refer to the interested stakeholders: customers, maintainers, producers. Rationale: There are values that customers constantly require in a modern software application. Some of these values are supported by product lines. Nevertheless, in the industrial and scientific communities the conjecture that customer values clash with those of producers/maintainers is diffused. Design of Study: we have designed and carried out a case study in an industrial context on an ongoing project to verify the validity of a product line in creating value for stakeholders. So data was collected as the project was being executed along a nine month period. Then, descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing were carried out. Results: experience acquired during the execution of an industrial project has allowed the authors to point out the differences between program families and software product lines. Also, the case study has shown how product lines contribute to stakeholder value proposition elicitation and reconciliation. Conclusions: This study has represented a first step towards analyzing the value that product lines represent for various stakeholders

    ERP systems implementation in complex organizations

    ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems implementation is a great organizational change, which many times does not reach the desired results. This paper proposes to help understand this implementation, considering that the knowledge of change and evolution processes in organizations may lead to other aspects to be considered, assisting in the identification of the most appropriate actions, restrictions and items that may help sustain the change. It proposes a complex organizational reference model to contribute understanding of the implementation process. Research results show that the concepts proposed in this model - subsystems, emergence, behavior attractors and complexity limits - apply to organizations and contribute to the understanding of the changes triggered by an ERP system implementation. Among other contributions, this work shows the importance of potential generation for change, the relationship among the behavior attractor and competitive advantages gained, and organizational systems maturity considerations

    Dependability-Assured Software Transformation

    The proposed research is to create new paradigm of software transformation and analysis tools that will incorporate computer-aided prototyping system (CAPS) into dependability-assured software transformational platform (DAST) for highly dependable embedded systems (HDES). DAST extends CAPS with software architecting and composition technologies to transform macro dependability (global qualitative requirements) into micro dependability (quantitative constraints). Based upon rapid prototyping, the dependability-assured transformational process from a rapid-prototyped system to the highly dependable embedded system will involve quantitative constraint abstraction in multiple perspectives, software transformation, and formal method applied to verify the correctness of the eventual-evolved system.NSFApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

    Energy Savings Consumption on Public Wireless Networks by SDN Management

    [EN] In order to use the energy more efficiently, network algorithms and protocols must incorporate in their decision mechanisms some functions focused on saving energy. In this paper we have studied different features and parameters of wireless networks to establish their relationship with the power consumption. First, we have analyzed the variation of power consumption of access points (APs) in function of the antenna transmission power. Second, we have collected user information from real public wireless network to determine the real requirements of network resources in real time basis. Based on this information, a new extension for Openflow protocol over Software-Defined Networking (SDN) networks will be proposed to manage the wireless network, with the aim to keep the optimal network performance with minimal power consumption. This extension introduces new Openflow messages and a new function to be incorporated in SDN controllers and Openflow enabled devices. The proposal will be validated by appropriated simulations based on real scenarios: a shopping center and a municipal wireless network.This work has been supported by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad , through the Convocatoria 2014.     Project management techniques for highly integrated programs

    The management and control of a representative, highly integrated high-technology project, in the X-29A aircraft flight test project is addressed. The X-29A research aircraft required the development and integration of eight distinct technologies in one aircraft. The project management system developed for the X-29A flight test program focuses on the dynamic interactions and the the intercommunication among components of the system. The insights gained from the new conceptual framework permitted subordination of departments to more functional units of decisionmaking, information processing, and communication networks. These processes were used to develop a project management system for the X-29A around the information flows that minimized the effects inherent in sampled-data systems and exploited the closed-loop multivariable nature of highly integrated projects
